Here’s something that has Hollywood’s animation pros buzzing today: Blogger and toon historian Jerry Beck has been bought out of the popular website Cartoon Brew by business partner Amid Amidi. Nine years after co-founding the venture which tracks the animation industry, Beck posted a farewell note to the site this afternoon. Amidi followed with a press release trumpeting the change along with a new mobile platform to come next month. For the animation community Beck’s sudden departure is an eyebrow-raiser, but Beck told Deadline talks began in November to decide Cartoon Brew’s fate. “We were clearly two different types of people in terms of our points of view”, Beck said. “I think that was one of the pleasures of the site. But the time had come to move on”. Beck is penning a book about SpongeBob SquarePants and will continue writing with a focus on animation history at his own blog Cartoon Research, which could grow into a competing toon-focused website.

A shame. Jerry is a good guy. Amid is… not.
ditto….
Well I don’t know where that’s coming from but as a regular visitor of the site I could see that possibly being the case. Personally, I always found Jerry’s postings benign but varied and happy so I hope he continues as it’d be a good counter balance. I do think it was a bit dipshitty (not a word but feel right no?) to not allow comments on the posting. Oh well, still hoping everything turns out well for the site (and yes Amid) and Jerry.
Jerry is better off professionally to disassociate himself from Amid.
Amid amidi is a tool… Jerry is all class, and the only reason the site had any credibiliy…
So sad. The articles I always liked were Jerry’s. Amid’s were usually a waste of time. I also notice they didn’t allow comments on either Jerry’s goodbye post or the press release post. Hmmmm…. Betting they knew what the comments would be, and with Amid’s history of deleting any comment he disagrees with he would have been pretty busy. Glad to see Jerry’s starting a new site.
I’m glad. Jerry is a great guy, a terrific writer and a man who truly understands and LOVES animation and animation history. Amid likes to stir up controversy and his posts are often inflammatory and derogatory. He’s not much better than an Internet troll, honestly, and his postings a chore. I could never understand why Jerry (loved and respected) would align himself with Amid (neither loved or respected). I wish Jerry every success and I’ll no longer be visiting Cartoon Brew. I’m sure it will go the way of AnimationNation with only Amid’s bitter, negative contributions.
I agree wholeheartedly. I am removing Cartoon Brew from my Toolbar and will begin reading Jerry Beck’s site, Cartoon Research. Amid is an abrasive personality and his self righteous opinions are sure to drive many readers away. I predict that Cartoon Brew will become a graveyard. Good Riddance!
Hopefully Jerry left on his own after years of everyone warning him that Amid’s brand of toxic editorializing would bleed over to his reputation too, sooner or later.
Godspeed Jerry. You were the sober Yin to Amid’s raging Yang.
Jerrys reputation in the industry for angry outbursts is known and documented

he and amid deserved each other
I made the switch to Bubbleblabbera while ago. Seems a bit more modernized with a focus on adult cartoons.Better than Amid anyway…
Never heard of this site, thanks for the heads up!
Amid is a terrible, terrible person. RIP Cartoon Brew.
Not sure about your term but I’d call not allowing comments as cowardly.
To put it lightly I really wasn’t a fan of Amid’s articles, but Jerry’s were so good and interesting I used to visit Cartoon Brew regularly, but now there’s no reason to go there.
