EXCLUSIVE: Who says all the hot film acquisition action is taking place in Berlin?
The first screening of Inside Llewyn Davis quietly took place last Saturday night in a screening room on the Sony lot. That’s the new film by Joel and Ethan Coen that takes place in the folk-music circuit in downtown New York’s Greenwich Village in the 1960s. Re-teaming with True Grit and No Country For Old Men cohort Scott Rudin, the Coens made Inside Llewyn Davis without a domestic distributor; their only alignment was with Studio Canal, which fully financed. Now, it’s apparently time to hook a distributor for an Oscar-season berth. I’m told that the screening was informal and held for a music crowd by T-Bone Burnett, reps from most of the studios were there, except Paramount and The Weinstein Company. They’ve been in no hurry so far to make a deal, but don’t be surprised if a distributor locks this one down very quickly.
Inside Llewyn Davis stars Oscar Isaac and the cast includes Justin Timberlake, Carey Mulligan, John Goodman, Adam Driver, and Garrett Hedlund. Stay tuned. Meanwhile, here’s the first trailer cut for the pic:

As a big fan of the Coens, I was surprised that I found the material in the trailer really hackneyed. Carey Mulligan’s “The Reason You Suck” speech is taken almost verbatim from The Social Network. The “stuck with an animal that isn’t really mine” gag is older than talkies. Goodman’s jokes are corny. And that title drop would be enough of an eye-roller even without the emphatic finger taps that underline it. Bruno Delbonnel’s cinematography is really the only thing I can get excited about here.
agreee – this looks corny and uninspired for the coen bros….will still see it because it’s the coen bros….
can’t wait for the film. also can’t wait for the depressing 30 second
wrestling ad before the trailer plays. how about the 5 second opt out button?
Know this time and place intimately and the trailer doesn’t look like it gets the period. Besides, no one used the word “condom” in those days; it was mostly referred to by the brand Trojans. Hope the film is better than the trailer or it will go quickly to VOD.
That is true EK. They were also called rubbers back then.
It’s a beautiful film. Oscar Isaac is incredible. It’s hard to believe that Joel and Ethan could improve as filmmakers but their films just keep getting better and better…
i was at this screening on saturday, along with most every studio head and a huge number of stars in casual wear (brad, angie, jake g, seth, lauren hutton, steve martin, jon stewart, sasha bc, ed helms, god, etc…). suffice to say it was an amazing room. AND AN AWESOME FILM. so smart, so well crafted, a fabulous tale of a man who can do no right, but you kinda love for trying. whoever buys this is going to take it right through to next year’s oscars…
Oscar Issac is truly brilliant in this.
He is going to win a small gold version of himself one day.
Snarky comments at their best! Based on a preliminary trailer for a specific preview audience, some of you are ready to write this film off. I trust the Cohens implicitly to do a powerful and interesting film every time out of the chute…and that trust has been justified far more often than not. No, there’s no superhero, no sophomoric ribaldry, and no zombies, vampires or werewolves. But it is the Cohens. It will be worth watching. And it will make money for somebody.
Exactly Writerly Guy.
Carey Mulligan is a terrific actress. Plus this is a film by the Coen bros. What’s not to like?
You wanna see it immediately and bummed it isn’t in a theater right now. Love “The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan” look and crossing of the street. Great look generally, great feel, doesn’t give what happens away, feels like a great cast. The Coens have very few equals in the business at the moment in my opinion. Their movies always give you something to talk about, their movies are about something, they have subject matter beneath the surface. Deft, sublime, yet provocative.
No offense, but for a couple of poster boys that have been outspoken against the digital movement, this movie sure looks very “RED.”
it was shot on 35mm. nice attempt though.
Can’t wait to see this film and hear which songs that T-Bone Burnett selected for the soundtrack. Justin Timberlake, Carey Mulligan and Tim Blake Nelson as a Peter, Paul and Mary type group should be very interesting too.
Tim Blake Nelson isn’t in the film and there is no “Peter, Paul & Mary type group” in it either.
Oscar is one of the sweetest people I have worked with in over 20 years. So excited for him and this opportunity. Congrats! He has a great scene in All About the Benjamins, been a fan since. Film looks very interesting.
