When Deadline broke the story that Johnny Depp would star as Whitey Bulger in the Barry Levinson-directed Black Mass, it raised a lot of questions about his intentions to star in Transcendence, the film directed by Chris Nolan’s visionary cinematographer Wally Pfister. His reps have now clarified the dance card of Depp, who’ll next be seen reuniting with Gore Verbinski in The Lone Ranger this summer. Here’s the deal:
LOS ANGELES (February 27, 2013) — Johnny Depp is set to star in Transcendence, the directorial debut of Oscar-winning cinematographer Wally Pfister. The film will begin principal photography in April.
The film is being financed and produced by Alcon Entertainment’s Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove and will be released by Warner Bros. The film will also be produced by Straight Up Films’ Annie Marter, Marisa Polvino and Kate Cohen along with David Valdes. Pfister will direct from newcomer Jack Paglen’s screenplay, which was developed with Annie Marter, with the most recent draft by Noah Oppenheim. Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas are serving as executive producers. Straight Up’s Regency Boies will co-produce.
Producers are not revealing the film’s plot.
Following Transcendence, Depp will segue into the crime thriller Black Mass, about notorious Boston mob boss Whitey Bulger, to be directed by Barry Levinson, with Jez Butterworth writing a new draft of the screenplay by Mark Mallouk, based on the New York Times best-seller Black Mass: The True Story of an Unholy Alliance Between the FBI and the Irish Mob by Boston Globe reporters Dick Lehr and Gerald O’Neill.
Filming is beginning in early summer of 2013.
The film will be produced by Cross Creek’s Brian Oliver and Tyler Thompson along with John Lesher via his Le Grisbi Productions and Nigel Sinclair and Guy East’s Exclusive Media, with Cross Creek and Exclusive Media co-financing.
Depp will next be seen starring in Disney’s big screen adaptation of The Lone Ranger directed by Gore Verbinski and debuting July 3, 2013. The film is produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and Verbinski along with Depp and Christi Dembrowski’s Infinitum Nihil banner. Infinitum Nihil’s credits also includeHugo, Dark Shadows and The Rum Diary.
Depp is represented by UTA and Bloom Hergott Diemer Rosenthal Laviolette Feldman Schenkman & Goodman, LLP.

The besst thing about all of these things is that Depp is doing Whitey Bolger with Levinson. Feels like the kind of movie he needs to do. The rest are just silly exercises in eccentricity. Bolger coulld reestablish his acting chops. Excited about that. Wary about all else. Especially Lone Ranger. That looks like a dated mess.
Is Levinson doing an Irish “Bugsy” a good idea for Depp at this point? It’s been a while for B.L. ka-ching. When was the last time it happened? Not counting him out, just sayin’.
affleck is actually the guy who should be getting this done for all the obvious reasons particularly the Affleck Damon Boston roots. I wouldn’t be surprised if Depp/Levinson never happens…the guy is obviously in a period of transition…but please…somebody find a part for amy poehler in any of this…
Watch ‘You Don’t Know Jack.’ Give Barry Levinson the right screenplay and he’ll kill it.
Really? The guy’s name is Pfister? No one is touching that?
@Benjaman How in the world could you be wary of Depp starring in Wally Pfister’s directional debut with Chris Nolan producing? That sounds pretty awesome to me. We’ve seen Depp do the mob thing, I want to see something original and fresh. Which is most likey right up Pfister’s sleeve.
So now we’re saying an actor, portraying a real life person has to be from the same state as that person?? Good lord. Affleck is a so-so actor and Matt Damon would be horribly miscast. Being from Boston doesn’t make someone perfect to play Whitey.
@Benjaman Transcendence will directed by an oscar winner cinematagroper and produced by nolan so we don’t have to worry about that project and the lone ranger in the other hand directed by an oscar winner director gore verbinski (potc, rango, the ring, family man) and written by three good writers Ted Elliott&Terry Rossio (shrek, potc) and starring good actors other than johnny depp, armie hammer (the social network,j.edgar) Tom Wilkinson (
Shakespeare in Love,Michael Clayton) helena bonham carter (sweeney todd, the king’s speech, fight clup) so we don’t have to worry about this one two it will be great and maybe a hit
Benjamin- Just FYI, you misspelled “Bulger”
i’m talkin’ about affleck’s familiarity with the culture which is unique; that affleck at the moment can probably do anything he wants; i didn’t know that damon was supposed to star; that affleck and depp might be a good idea; that levinson doing an irish bugsy (maybe)isn’t exactly an idea per se. levinson is certainly associated with baltimore btw…good point about levinson with a good script…have not seen the pacino “you don’t know jack” so i gotta check it out…
Levinson has been a consistent director for decades and gets career performances from actors (such as Robin Williams and Richard Dreyfus).
It’s no wonder he continues to get work, despite the lack of box offce. That’s a testament to his standing in the industry.
He’s the guy that Woody Allen should be (i.e., lose the scandal, keep the rep).
Levinson’s really good. But doesn’t everything that Depp does become a Depp monstrosity and is that what Levinson does?
I disagree. The quirkiness of Depp is what sells me and why I usually always see movies he is in!! In Pirates of the Caribean I would have preferred a lot more of him and less of some of the other “stuff”. I just saw the trailer for Lone Ranger. Yes, I will be going to see it at the theater!! I usually wait for release to watch I home. I grew up during the original Lone Ranger and yet Depp’s presence in this one makes me want to see a different “version”.
Sorry, this might be an ignorant question, but what does this have to do with dancing?
I read Transcendence. A really boring sci-fi action movie: more Lawnmower Man than Inception. I can see why Pfister was attracted to the visuals but why A-List talent would attach (other than for Pfister) I do not know.
