EXCLUSIVE: Long live the spec script! Lionsgate just bought Endangered, a spec script by Ryan Belenzon and Jeffrey Gelber for Lionsgate/Summit with Alli Shearmur producing. It’s an action-adventure script about a team of scientists on a mission to find the fountain of youth. This might be the first spec script deal of the year and comes along just when I was thinking that specs were on the endangered list. The writers, who were recently Nicholls finalists, also have Clarity, a character-driven sci-fi piece set up at BonaFide and are producing Dito Montiel’s Boulevard, which has Robin Williams set to star. They are repped by Paradigm, Zero Gravity and attorney Ryan Nord.

Actually, Mike, this is the eighth spec sale of 2013 – I just published the January 2013 Spec Market Roundup at ScogginsReport.com which lists the other seven. And not to be pedantic, but specs aren’t on the endangered list, either — there were 132 spec sales each of the last two years, which is a 15 year high.
‘Endangered’ is a pun on the script title.
I thought that, too, until I read that line mid-way through the post.
Oops.
Can’t really think of a better fitting word…
+1 for scoggins and his kick ass reports that deadline should be reading.
Thanks for the accurate reporting, Scoggins. It’s unfortunate that it has to come from the comment section. I am now a new devotee to your site.
Is it asking too much for the facts on Deadline to be remotely close to accurate?
Fucking seriously. Pull it up guys. Not that hard to follow the market.
Happy news for this spec scripter.
Thrilled for Ryan and Jeff! Two fantastic writers and all around awesome dudes! This is just the beginning of a long and successful career!
Very curious to know what kind of conversation they’ll be having regarding the similarities to another work…
what work is that?
Uncharted II: Among Thieves.
deadline – you contradict your own hype machine — what do you think 80% of scripts on the BlackList are…. SPECS… yes, it would be great if even 5 percent of them sold, but most go one to establish new and old writers back into the game….
Jeffrey and Ryan are amazing and talented writers. Best of luck to them and continued success always!!!!
They’re GREAT scribes. Congrats – well deserved.
Development is so screwed up in this town now that producers no longer have deals. It’s bad for movies. Especially good ones. And for writers they’re always getting the fuzzy end of the lollipop.
Good for Coggins too. That’s her second project set up at Lionsgate since working for Alli.
