He has been one of the most wanted men for television series for the past two years. After passing on dozens of pilots, Kyle Chandler has finally picked his follow-up to Friday Night Lights, which won him an Emmy. Chandler is set as the lead in Vatican, Showtime‘s high-profile drama pilot from Oscar nominees Paul Attanasio and Ridley Scott. Also joining the pilot, written by Attanasio and to be directed by Scott in his pilot directing debut, is German actor Sebastian Koch (The Lives Of Others). They join previously cast Matthew Goode. Vatican reunites Chandler with Showtime entertainment president David Nevins, who as president of Imagine TV executive produced the critically acclaimed Friday Night Lights.
Said to evoke The Sopranos and Upstairs, Downstairs, Vatican is described as a provocative contemporary genre thriller about spirituality, power and politics set against the modern-day political machinations within the Catholic church. Chandler will play Cardinal Thomas Duffy, the charismatic yet enigmatic Archbishop of New York, whose progressive leanings (he has ordained a woman) excite some and alarm others within the hierarchy of the Catholic Church. Koch will play Cardinal Marco Malerba, the Vatican’s Secretary of State who is informally known as the “dark prince of the Curia” for his proven abilities to ruthlessly wield power within the Church hierarchy. Goode plays Papal Secretary Bernd Koch. “Kyle Chandler is one of the most talented and sought-after actors working today, and was a fantastic creative partner through five seasons of Friday Night Lights,“ said Nevins. “With Kyle, Matthew Goode and Sebastian Koch, Ridley and Paul have put together a powerhouse cast to anchor this incredibly timely show.” The Vatican, produced by Sony Pictures TV in association with Showtime and Scott Free, is set to begin production in April.
Since Friday Night Lights ended its run, Chandler has been focused on features. He is in two films nominated for Best Picture: Argo and Zero Dark Thirty; he shared in Argo‘s best ensemble cast win at the SAG Awards last month. This year, he was out in Broken City and also co-stars in the upcoming The Wolf Of Wall Street and the untitled Terrence Malick project. Chandler is with Gersh and Brillstein Entertainment. Koch is currently seen in A Good Day To Die Hard.

Now this project is interesting.
I don’t think so…very dull all around.
That’s a great idea for a TV series. Wish I’d thought of that.
It would be VERY interesting to know how this show is going to keep up with the roller coaster that is the current Vatican; the threat to arrest Ratzinger and the next Pope (whomever he may be), frozen Catholic assets, charges of criminal conspiracy, etc. And that’s just THIS week’s news.
Um, I just… I don’t know how I feel about this. Surprised I guess.
I really thought he’d stick with movies from now on.
To be realistic though, if an Archbishop of New York really ordained a woman to the priesthood, he would be immediately excommunicated. I wonder how accurate they will be. And I hope there no Catholic bashing, but I dare say that will be unavoidable.
Exactly right. There is no way in hell the Archbishop of New York would ever do something so heretical. This aspect of the show is so unnecessary and absurd that it will damage the show. Truth is more intriguing than fiction. The plot needs only to stick closer to the truth of the Vatican.
Looking forward to seeing more of Kyle Chandler. He seems to be a very genuine and respectable man, along with being a talented actor.
And, Kyle, refreshingly, stays out of the limelight. I respect him even more for that.
He is so talented, and his Emmy was so well deserved. This project is now hugely anticipated from where I’m standing.
Rex, Chandler has that James Garner talent and charisma, but he didn’t deserve the Emmy over the still Emmy-less Jon Hamm.
please… chandler deserved five emmys in a row for that role… he has way more presence and credibility than hamm.
I loved Hamm in Mad Men, but Chandler deserved it more. He didn’t need props like cigarettes and drinks to convey his emotions.
Hamm deserves an Emmy too! I’ve always thought Emmys should be capped at two per role.
Or, just read “The Cardinal”. A great book. I’m going to, I got the time. My friend Otto’s movie was pretty good, too.
No one really gives a shit about the Catholic Church and it’s workings in mainstream America. It’s such an outdated entity and an embarrassing one to boot. This is like SURGEON GENERAL–in Church. A bad premise. While I love Kyle Chandler–this seems really boring and will not last.
Actually, a lot of people give a shit. Some people love the Church, while others hate it. Nobody can say that it doesn’t intrigue. The Vatican is drama, so it’s the perfect setting for a drama.
Absurd. A cardinal doesn’t have the authority to ordain a woman. Another anti-Catholic fantasy.
I’ll watch anything Kyle Chandler is in – have been a fan since ‘Early Edition’. I hope the project is worthy and well written.
To Pedro-
Tell this to the millions who watched and continue to watch any show/movie that deals with the passion of the Christ !!
More persons will watch thus than you can imagine ! Chandler is a great draw for this!
Another shows about cardinals? They’ve got the Borgias already.
No one does research anymore! Not even the Pope hilmself could ordain a woman.
