Dick Wolf, creator of the Law & Order franchise, has weighed in on the controversial upcoming episode of Law & Order: SVU, which guest stars former boxer Mike Tyson in his first acting gig playing someone other than himself. Tyson’s casting has come under attack from advocate groups protesting the involvement of a convicted rapist (Tyson served three years for a 1991 incident involving a Miss Black America pageant contestant) on a show dedicated to sex crime victims.
In the SVU episode, titled Monster’s Legacy, Tyson plays Reggie Rhodes, a murderer on death row whose violent actions may in part be the byproduct of sexual abuse as a child. His case attracts the attention of Benson (Mariska Hargitay) and defense attorney Bayard Ellis (Andre Braugher) during an SVU investigation. Also guest starring in the episode is Ed Asner. “It focuses on what can happen when there is an emotionally charged rush to judgment and it is, in my opinion, one of our strongest episodes in the last five years,” Wolf said in a note accompanying screeners for Monster’s Legacy. Originally scheduled for Feb. 13, the episode has been moved up to Feb. 6, sparking speculation that the shift may have been made so that the Mike Tyson episode does not air on the eve of One Billion Rising, a global event supporting rape and abuse survivors.

Season 13/14 have been excellent. People shouldnt confuse the campaign against warren leight etc with the campaign about Tyson. Its a pity they got mixed up because it takes away from the credibility.
All the hard work put into SVU these past two years by cast and crew is much appreciated.
Switch to the Disney channel, haters.
The critics don’t keep a show on the air ratings do and ratings have been low. Critics are not always right. People are the ones who decided what is popular.
How is this any different from casting ice t who sang a rap song about killing cops to play a cop. Dick wolf likes money and he knows these casting stunts will bring attention which brings viewed which brings money. If you think he cares about victims and sex crimes you are dreaming.
I haven’t had too many problems with the newer seasons minus ‘he who shall not be name.’ (Stabler) Though I’ve kept my head held high and kept supporting Mariska in all this, I still think it’s a little sketchy with the MT casting stunt. And that’s exactly what it is. It’s not that MT has a violent history with a rap sheet ten miles long, it’s the fact it’s been so public over the course of 20 plus years with the newest of this stunts from only a few years ago (2010?)… I mean, there is a difference between serving your time compared to ‘actually’ learning your lesson and knowing your views are skewed. Continuous misogynistic remarks don’t make me feel sorry for the dude. And this casting is for ratings plain and simple. Once word got out how offended fans were, it fueled the plan even more. And they’ll keep the episode on schedule to air to see just how many of the ‘diehard’ fans will watch even though it’s all about the money and not them and some of the survivors who’ve kept them in business. I’ll skip this one because it seems like the moral thing to do since it’s called SVU and not the Second Chance Unit. But I won’t go spreading hate around the internet. If you’re a fan of SVU and not an MH stan, you’d know it’s not about hating, it’s about realizing you’re being used for their paychecks.
Some people requesting the cancellation of SVU. Meloni’s fans are frustrated. They thought that the series would end. Dropped rankings. But not over. And even improved. The stories are better now than at the time of Neal Baer. Nael did everything to give an Emmy for Meloni. But for the actor lacked talent. Dani Pino is prettier and more talented than Meloni. I hope he, Meloni, give yourself better in his films. Because your time is over SVU. Thank God.
You can’t compare yourself to mt.
You can’t pass judgment on others.
That’s the definition and core of the concept of bullying.
Personally I enjoy watching characters on lo that are not anything like me. He’s a fascinating character just as all of the wolf shows are.
Looking forward to this!
The show is at its best when the crime storylines transcend plot structure and subtly seep into the lives of the main characters, so that we are slowly made aware of how these (hopefully exciting, unique, and tragic) stories illuminate their lives. It is about the crime. It is about the victim. But those two threads should mirror or shine a light on something deeper within the cast whose job it is to solve the crime and support of the victim. For 12 years this show was brilliant at taking a painstakingly slow pace in revealing anything about the characters who drive the emotional thrust of this show alongside the victims. There was a deeply entrenched history of quiet respect that the characters had for each other, and that the writers had for the characters. Now, Bensen is struggling to find her footing and although she is always solid, some of the writing mis-steps (really? Harry Connick Jr.?) have left her seeming…trite, instead of legitimately floundering at mid-life with no husband, no career advancement, and no children. Although last week’s episode had dashes of surprising humor which was greatly appreciated (things can get a little heavy in the precinct, no?), the storylines need to deepen and mature while presenting crimes/victims in new, creative ways. Please, no more prostitutes in the park or dead strippers. MIne the history of all the characters, combine that with headline news, thoughtfully think through what these people are facing as they move beyond the mid-point in their career, and write a kick-ass show.
It’s sad that the powers that be on SVU have sunk so low to have a convivted rapist on the show. They knew exactly what they were doing when they casted Mike Tyson. I stand with those who refuse to watch the show.
