For the first time since his move to 11:35 PM last month, Jimmy Kimmel was beaten by his hero David Letterman last week. CBS’ The Late Show bested ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live in total viewers by 40%, pulling in an average of 3.4 million to the ABC show’s 2.48 million for the week ending February 8. Letterman also topped Kimmel in households (2.5/06 to 1.8/05), adults 18-49 (0.8/03 to 0.7/03), adults 25-54 (1.1/04 vs. 0.9/04) and adults 18-34 (0.5/02 vs. 0.4/02). That’s a 14%, 22% and 25% margin of victory respectively for the key demos. However, that result partially tells us that the Baltimore Ravens weren’t the only ones to get a win out of Super Bowl XLVII. Letterman’s show was strongly promoted on CBS during the big game and he had MVP Joe Flacco on the day after the February 3 Super Bowl. The Late Show also did well against NBC’s The Tonight Show With Jay Leno. The CBS late night show tied Leno in adults 18-49, adults 25-54, and adults 18-34 last week. Letterman was just a tad behind Leno in total viewers average over the week, garnering 3.47 million to The Tonight Show’s 3.52 million.

If Disney is thinking of replacing Jimmy, I am available…but, even Disney’s pockets are not deep enough…LOL. Jimmy is doing fine.
It’s become a 3 way race to the bottom, all 3 shows have a total of 9 1/2 million viewers. Carson had over 20 million at his peak. Allen, Parr and Carson are all rolling over in their graves.
Allen, Parr and Carson were not smarmy dicks (Kimmel), tired and burned out (Letterman) or smarmy dicks who are tired and burned out and painfully unfunny and more than a little creepy (Leno).
That may have something to do with it. Ah, I yearn for an era when a late night host will be remembered for something other than his rumored massive porn collection.
Carson got over 20 million for one episode, you dipshit (Tiny Tim’s wedding). No other broadcast ever got over 9.4 million, and the show averaged 6-7 million most seasons, against no competition whatsoever. So your entire grave-rolling premise is as stupid as you are.
Its funny how the race for #2 is such big news. Meanwhile Leno has been holding the #1 spot for what, 30 years?
Right You Are, Sweden. And That’s The Truth.
Putting Jimmy Fallon on earlier would revitalize late night. Read my lips, late night execs. Jimmy Fallon is the future. The future is now. You are drawing a collective nine million viewers per night on the three major networks (per Alex, whom I believe is spot on), what do you have to lose? There is a host out there who has a very similar appeal to a young Johnny Carson, and we have to stay up till 12:35 a.m. to see him. I work for a living, no can do every night. Not to mention that Fallon’s show would cost a lot less to produce than Leno or Letterman.
I know this is old news, and most people don’t care, but it sucks that everyone has forgotten about Conan. It’s not that his show isn’t any good, it’s just that nobody can find him, or doesn’t know when or where to watch. And with Arsenio returning, how many more Late Night talk shows does the world really need?
LENO – Give him the boot, immediately. And not just for what he did to Carson, Letterman and Conan. I don’t understand why NBC is catering to this 50+ crowd with him. Since when did Networks and Studios care about what old people thought of TV anyways. And why do these old people still watch this incredibly unfunny bastard?
LETTERMAN – Time to retire, Dave. Everyone can see that he doesn’t care about even being there anymore. I think he’ll only stick around until Leno’s long-gone from late night television first.
KIMMEL – Keep him where he is. He’s fine.
FALLON – Not necessarily my taste, but he’s not my demographic. Keep him.
FERGUSON – The funniest guy in late night right now. He’s in-line to take over Dave’s spot when Letterman finally does decide to retire. I worry however that his type of antics won’t work well at 11:30. Same thing happened to Conan; he’s just not 12:30 material.
CARSON DALY – Who watches this boob? Why is he even still on the air? Conan left The Tonight Show to save this guys 1:30 show that nobody seems to watch or care about. The world doesn’t need a third late night talk show. End it now NBC.
CONAN – So sad. His ratings are in the toilet. This once crowned prince of Late Night may soon be the out-of-work Prince unless TBS continues to enjoy burning money.
CHELSEA HANDLER – Really? This untalented thing gets her own talk show. Oh that’s right, she f**ked the president of Comedy Central to get the gig. Here’s an idea, kick her out, and put Conan on after Stewart and Colbert instead of this.
ARSENIO – Going syndication is smart. I think he’s got a good chance of staying alive if he books great guests and he’s up to the challenge of doing entertaining interviews.
And I still hear rumblings that FOX may still yet do their own Late Night show someday. Who knows what the future of Late Night holds. Oh wait, I know, a third Bill Carter book! “How Jay Leno screwed them all!!!”
Conan has truly lost his way. Have you seen his show lately? This guy used to the funniest person to watch on late night television. He’s so boring now. He’s not that edgy guy that he used to be. No more vomiting puppets, or masturbating bears. Not that he has to do that material specifically, but it’s obvious he lost something when he left NBC. Even his short stint on the Tonight Show was edgier and funnier than what he’s doing now. He won’t last much longer before TBS decides that the Late Night format just isn’t working for them. It’s too bad really, because I do respect and like the guy. But if he’s not generating the eyes and ears, what’s the point.
It’s pretty funny that leno and letterman are still winning with the younger demo…
