Lionsgate execs had to do a little balancing act this morning when they talked to Wall Street analysts about the early plans for the movie version of author Veronica Roth’s Divergent. They clearly want investors to salivate over the prospect of another hit on the order of The Hunger Games. But they don’t want the Street to believe that the studio will blithely slap the Divergent name on the Hunger Games playbook. CEO Jon Feltheimer noted that, like Hunger Games, the new film — also based on a book series for children and young adults that anticipates a dystopian future — will open in mid-March (specifically, March 21, 2014). Divergent’s book sales “are approaching the 3M mark and continue to compare favorably to The Hunger Games and Twilight franchises at a similar point in their trajectory,” he says. But Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Co-Chairman Rob Friedman says he recognizes key differences in the stories, and their fan bases. In Divergent “the society is different,” he says. Hunger Games “is about the society that’s striving for survival” while Divergent “is about the way a society is surviving with distinct personalities and how those personalities interweave with each other.” Not sure that I get the distinction, but the analyst who asked the question called the insight “helpful.”

The Divergent series is better written. The second book was as good as the first. The same can’t be said about Hunger Games.
Is this post for real? Divergent was so obviously written by a college-aged student. Not that great writing can’t come from someone that age, but you can really tell the writing wasn’t as strong as HG.
you are right!
That’s ridiculous. All the characters in Divergent (evil or not) have redeeming qualities and you can see every side of them even when Tris can’t.
That’s ridiculous. In Divergent, you can see every part of a character and all of the characters have redeeming qualities, even Jeanine had what she thought was best interests in mind. In The Hunger Games, no one has redeeming qualities and honestly, Katniss thinks she’s better than EVERYONE else. Don’t lie to yourself and think otherwise. With good writing you see and hear about those redeeming qualities. Hunger Games, although I love it, is definitely not as well written as Divergent.
What the hell are you even talking about? In the Hunger Games, Katniss never boasts about herself. Ever. In fact, she does quite the opposite. She’s BY FAR my favorite heroine in fictional literature. Though I like Divergent, Tris did not grip me as much. There wasn’t any ‘special’ quality about her. Don’t get me wrong I liked the book, (Not as much as I liked the Hunger Games trilogy buut) I just think that Tris was too bland, too normal. Katniss had a much stronger and interesting personality (this is my personal opinion). Divergent fans, please dont take that the wrong way.
Anyway, so I just want to point out that Katniss never thinks she’s better than everyone else. Find me a quote from any of the books and I will pay you. The only thing that comes close, is in Mockingjay, when she’s asking for a spot in Squad 451. That’s honestly it.
Characters having redeeming qualities don’t necessarily equate to a good book or story. And for the record, while Katniss can be guarded and acts on her self-interest (which is only fitting if one lives in a bleak world controlled by the Capitol), she’s compassionate and selfless as well. She’s a dynamic, conflicted character and the best stories come out of that.
You are kidding right. The Hunger Games kept me on the edge of my seat throughout the whole trilogy. When I read Divergent, I wanted to shoot myself, it was so boring! it only redeemed itself when I read Insurgent. But otherwise, it just seemed like this whiny girl who wanted everything to go her way. The Hunger Games is waaaay more superior to Divergent. End of story.
Don’t worry CEO, mindless kids will flow to yet another POS movie remake.
So I take it nobody wanted to buy your wannabe Wes Anderson spec?
Seriously though, if there weren’t big franchises, there also wouldn’t be any auteur/filmmaker movies. They are called ‘tentpoles’ for a reason.
I love both series but I’m just tired watching movies about every single book that I read. Or maybe I’m too old now.
Haven’t read this book. But my first impression is that it’s spineless — selling based on confusion with a successful title.
i cant believe kate winslet doing this.
Divergent books are mind numbingly stupid and poorly written garbage. The world building is non-existent, the general premise is filled with plot holes, the heroine is extremely unlikeable, romance predictable and the villains so cardboard, it would appear the author used EVERY single familiar trope there is in order to ride the HG gravy train.
Comparing Divergent to any of the HG books is an insult and blasphemy.
I don’t see it. I read Divergent. And didn’t like it much. At times it was so boring that I wanted to drop it. But finally read it to the end. And still can’t decide whenever I want to read second book or not.
The whole concept was kind of stupid and unrealistic. And success depends on whom then will chose for Four. Because if they will chose that douche Alex Pettyfer then they are doomed. He will ruin the movie like he did with I Am Number Four.
Better than everyone else? Lol. I sugesst you ACTUALLY read the book before commenting about it.
Divergent is really good. no doubt about that. but its not as gripping as the hunger games.
AMEN. @hani
Okay, I love Divergent so much. It’s really well-written, and I think Veronica Roth is amazing. However, it has it’s bad sides, such as the descriptions seeming overwrought. Also, Katniss doesn’t think she’s better than anyone else. To say that is to call her pretentious, which she definitely is not. How can you say no one has redeeming qualities? Cinna’s selflessness, Katniss’s selflessness, Gale’s devotion, Peeta, although one dimensional, has a ton. Snow’s honesty (even Snow has a redeeming quality), etc.
Veronica Roth came up with Divergent in 2006, Hunger Games was published in 2008.
Divergent and The Hunger Gamea have a lot of differences as well. My opinion, Divergent is a great written SERIES, for The Hunger Games, only book one is written stong.
