Luber Roklin Entertainment today sued Stephen Crawford for allegedly telling his clients not to pay commissions to his former employer once he moved to a new firm. In the three-claims complaint (read it here) the management company says that the trouble started when Crawford left LRE after five years on March 31, 2012 and joined
Industry Entertainment as a manager. With his move, Crawford took his clients such as Jon Herman, Tiffany Paulsen, Adam Minarovich, David DiGilio, Adam Kane and John P. Lavin with him. Soon afterward, all of them ceased paying their 10% commissions to LRE. “If the LRE Clients were to terminate the management relationship with LRE, then LRE would continue to be entitled to a ten percent commission on all deals entered into or negotiated while they were LRE clients. All amounts owed under the LRE Clients’ agreements with LRE were to be paid directly to LRE, not to Crawford or any other individual manager. Although these agreements were not memorialized in writing, the terms as detailed herein were ratified through the parties’ course of conduct,” says the complaint. LRE is seeking unspecified damages and a full accounting from Crawford in its demand for a three-day jury trial. LRE is represented by Jordan Susman of LA firm Freedman & Taitelman

Luber is a joke. Seems like they are making a business on back commissions because they can’t hold onto a client (or employee) long enough to make money.
Been a client of Crawford’s for years and couldn’t have been happier when he finally left that toxic sludge pit earlier this year. Crawford has been nothing but straight-up and honest with me, but Luber Roklin was always a shop that stunk from the head. I wish I could say this move from them is surprising. Crawford will come out of this continuing to be a passionate and trustworthy advocate for his clients, Luber Roklin will continue to operate as an outfit that gives talent management a bad name.
“This move from them”? They are collecting what is rightfully theirs after months of trying to settle. And Crawford did spend FIVE YEARS at LRE. It is really nice that you are trying to support your manager but send him a bottle of wine instead of tearing down the company that helped him build his business.
“Rightfully theirs?” According to whom exactly? Oh right, according to one side in a dispute. Unless you have any actual knowledge of the dispute you probably shouldn’t be sharing an opinion on the merits. Commissions are not always black and white, nor do we know anything about good faith (or otherwise) efforts on either side to settle this. I’m sorry I don’t have nicer things to say about the other principles of LRE. Not everyone in this industry has earned the right to be spoken about in glowing fashion.
Hmmm. I have been in the foxhole with Crawford many times. He is very honorable and fair. I’m sure the veracity of the case will show that to be true.
Why is it you only hear Luber/Roklin’s name when there is a lawsuit? Come on, why go after a good guy like Crawford? This is bush league.
Because he owes them the money. It’s pretty simple. Being a “good guy” doesn’t exempt you from honoring your agreements.
All I can say is that Steve is literally one of the few good guys in the business. This article paints him out to be somebody he’s not. Like a previous commenter posted, he’s honorable and fair.
And keep in mind, I say all of this, even though he didn’t come to my super bowl party. That says a lot.
Steve is a passionate manager and an honest person to deal with. This feels ridiculous. And I’m not just saying this because he did come to my Super Bowl party.
Same old Luber Roklin. No class going after a great guy who was smart enough to get out. Bush league is right. No wonder most people think they are a joke.
Right, because all classy management companies just let their commissions walk out the door. It’s called a business, people, and if Crawford told his clients that booked jobs while at LRE not to pay their commissions once he left LRE, then Crawford fucked up, not LRE.
Given the lack of formal contracts, and the antiquated, agency-authored CA laws (which I believe are still in place) about what managers can and cannot do and be entitled to pay for, I don’t know what kind of a case they’ve really got (regardless of whether they deserve to be paid or not; I don’t know Crawford and know LR in name only).
These people are truly charlatans and bad human beings…or perhaps one is bad and the other truly dumb and insecure. You can’t lie, steal, cheat and sue your way from through life. The Bernie Madoff’s of management. Sit with any manager — and I’m saying ANYONE and they will have some story about these cheats. Luber and she pretend to be partners but they really stab one another in the back. Ask any agent in town, 18 months back Luber did the rounds to try to distance himself from her and it was embarrassing. They should dissolve their partnership. Too bad the state or fed govt can’t investigate their business practices. I assure you many feel it is possible local, state and federal laws could be broken…
If you had the balls to show your identity, Agreed, LRE should sue you for libel. I will look for you at the next premier- I am sure you will be the suit glad-handing them both while sharpening your anonymous knife. I know the better half of LRE and he is none of the things you describe.
Hear Hear!!
This is bullshit. The truth will prevail. Crawford rocks!!
Having known Crawrford over the years, and hearing of the behavior of Roklin, I can say which side I’m guessing it all falls on. Yet the ‘code of conduct’ for managers leaving companies is that the commission they made there either stays with their old employer or is negotiated out. So what exactly were the exit terms of Crawford’s leaving?
Doesn’t anyone remember the last Deadline story on Luber Roklin? They should all be in jail. Endangering children? Child actor bootcamps?

Oh, Rob. Before you throw gasoline on this particular fire,do your homework. Roses had been doing that bootcamp shit long before he went to LRE and after he was indicted, he was fired immediately. No one had any idea that what he was doing was illegal, as a new law had gone into effect the year before that he somehow missed. Roses paid the fine and as soon as his probation was up, ran his own shop- total talent management- before becoming the VP of Motion pictures and Television at Lewis and Beal last month, which is a kid’s agency. He was a moron who forgot to file the bond with the city. He got a slap on the wrist because there was NO PROOF that he actually did any endangering of any children, despite the fervor created by Deadline and all the other lames(like you) jumping on the bandwagon. Yes, Nick is cheesy, but if they indicted everyone who stretched the truth in this business there would be no one left.
Luber is a joke. Super lame on all levels.
Luber-Rocklin – you are a JOKE. What happened to employers taking the high road and not airing their dirty laundry in such an obnoxius way? This company is across the board considered the dregs of the representation business and this “smart” move has just made them shadier and somehow worse. Crawford is a hard working, respected and stand-up manager, justice will hopefully prevail here – and someone needs to stand up to these ego-maniac, entitled idiots. Stay strong crawford…
high road? the suit was filed its in the public record. just like when aloni left caa. or herz left uta. was their an outcry then?
Wait, I’m confused… Luber Roklin is bad because they want money that’s owed to them?
LRE ruins actors ability to get work. Agents that deal with company are to blame also. They get stabbed then next thing you know they back in biz with. LRE and their managers provide NO VALUE.
Reputation should count for something!
You obviously don’t read Deadline cuz they have announcements about LRE actors getting work there almost every week…
LBE just seems petty and litigious. Crawford is one of the most stand-up guys out there and this won’t change that. All it does is make LBE look bad.
well, the rent doesn’t get paid with unicorn farts now does it? If people paid their commission like they agreed to when they signed up, maybe LRE wouldn’t have to sue them.
yeah, it’s also called negotiating a split on the revenues so that LBE gets what they feel owed and Crawford can move on to a better company with part of the revenue he’s earned. No one is faulting LBE for looking to cover their expenses. BUT, suing the guy before trying to negotiate a split and trying to smear him in the press is what is petty & litigious.
And, if you can find a unicorn anywhere out there, I’m sure you could cover your rent with it’s farts and your car payment with it’s poop.
Yeah, well it’s also called trying for a really long time to reach aforementioned negotiated split to no avail. And yes, every nay sayer on this site IS faulting LRE for going after their revenue (i.e cheap, greedy, petty etc.) and taking the opportunity to anonymously get in digs that they are too chicken shit to say in real life. Blame Deadline and the Hollywood Reporter for the “press smear”- they plucked the complaint from public record and made everyone involved look bad- something this rag in particular LOVES to do.
Get your facts straight. Now I have to go feed my unicorn.
Crawford is a stand up guy in business and in life. LRE has proven themselves otherwise….
a “stand up guy” that was likely asked to give the owed commissions back and said no, or they wouldn’t have to SUE him. I love all these people assuming that LRE is in the wrong because they just don’t like Lena. Hilarious.
So if LRE was soooo awful and Crawford is sooooo amazing, then why on earth did he stay for FIVE YEARS? I call bullshit on you, Mister. Toxic sludge pit ,my ass.
Current and prospective employees of LRE read this article closely and beware…a rather aggressive move for a matter that should have been handled internally. Seems like Luber is trying to quickly and swiftly collect his last pennies before his own company implodes and he’ll be using whatever settlement he gets from this to cover his own lawyer fees when everyone is suing him.
Oh, please. Which of the clients on Crawford’s list are worth enough cover anything more than a Starbucks latte? The only thing imploding is any sense of decency on the part of “news” magazines like this one. This is not a news story. Shameful.
Right, obviously LRE is publicly filing a lawsuit because absolutely no money’s involved..These clients are booking studio jobs. Get a clue.
Um, it says Crawford was there for five years…that’s hardly a quick turnover. And from the outsider perspective collecting money that belongs to you seems like a smart business move.
Regardless of how you feel about LRE, if commissions are owed, commissions are owed. That company allowed those guys to book work and if every client got to decide whether to pay commissions on how they feel about it later on, there would be no reps in town. Maybe LRE sucks. Maybe Crawford is a mensch. But if those people booked jobs using infrastructure that LRE provided, then pay up.
Awful lot of ifs in there from someone who has absolutely zero knowledge of the situation. Sure, lets just swallow Matt Luber and Lena Roklin’s side of the story and act like we have an smart opinion to share in a private dispute. Mkay.
Long and the short. LRE greedy and bottom feeding once again.
Poor clients are there because they don’t know better and drank their Kool-Aid. Embarassing to be repped there. Producers always felt less of me with that moniker stamped on me. Glad i am out.
Long and short. Disgruntled ex-clients are the worst…liars and libelers. And read about those poor clients on Deadline, this week, last week, the week before. Poor things making all those deals…it’s really tragic.
How funny is it to read the LRE assistants posts in this thread defending that dreadful place?
