Psych co-star Maggie Lawson has landed the lead opposite James Caan in the Cullen brothers’ single-camera comedy pilot for ABC. In December, USA Network announced an eighth-season renewal for veteran Psych with an eight-episode order. The network stopped short of saying the eighth season will be Psych‘s last, but I have learned that the plan is for the eight-episode Season 8 to be the show’s final installment. The ABC pilot has Lawson in first position, but since Psych‘s eighth season won’t air until 2014, it will film for eight weeks starting April 29, allowing Lawson to finish her role as Juliet O’Hara. (Of course, with fan favorite Psych anything is possible, including extra episodes and even another season, though Lawson’s future on the show beyond the eight-episode Season 8 is unclear.)
The Cullen brothers project, from 20th TV, centers on Terry Gannon (Lawson), a recently divorced single mother who temporarily moves in with her estranged father (Caan), a beer-swilling former baseball player. She reluctantly starts coaching her son Tommy’s (Griffin Gluck) underdog Little League team and is drawn back into the world of sports she vowed to leave behind. Ben Koldyke co-stars in the pilot, written by Mark and Robb Cullen and directed by feature directors John Requa and Glenn Ficarra in their pilot-directing debut. The Cullen brothers are executive producing the pilot with Requa, Ficarra and Aaron Kaplan of Kapital Entertainment. Lawson is with Gersh, Alchemy Entertainment and attorney Michael Schenkman.

Great signing. Lawson is a real champ.
I hope it’s not the end for ‘Psych’ – that show is so under-appreciated and is thriving.
Lawson and Gluck will be adorable, I cant wait.
Good for her but it’s hard to see Psych without Juliet. On the other hand, how do you pass up a lead opposite James Caan? You don’t. However, I have a hard time seeing James Caan in a comedy show. Even with Caan, the chances these days of network shows actually making it through one season are slim to none. Whatever happens I would love to see Maggie Lawson continue with a current or new show.
I thought James Caan was pretty funny in Elf. He managed to hold his own against Will Ferrell. And the Cullen’s certainly know how to write for him, and with Koldyke (don’t judge him by Work It) and the always welcome Lawson, this could be a great show.
I second the notion hoping that Season 8 is not the last for “Psych.” Humorous mystery/suspense has rarely been as well done, and the show would be seriously missed. There’s just not a lot out there like it. Of course, the folks who make it may be getting tired after 8 years. Maggie Lawson is certainly good, but the show could go on without her.
I totally hope the upcoming season of psych is NOT the last.It is a lot of fun as is my show. I see a future beyond this season for the show. I love those guys as I based my entire act on them. Seriously though, hopefully both my show THE MENTALIST and their show PSYCH will be around for many more seasons. I can sense it-can you?
Maggie is super talented and a lovely person. Great choice.
I don’t necessarily think that season 8 has to be the last, in spite of what may (or may not) be planned at this moment. It ain’t over until USA announces a final season, and they may be waiting for to see how season 7 fairs before deciding for sure. The show certainly seems to have enough moment to keep going, especially with shorter season. And if the show did continue past season 8, it would likely be with shorter seasons, which would hardly preclude Maggie from being on another show, assuming all parties were amenable to the idea. And why not when Psych will probably only be filming a few months out of year? By the way, I think they’ll be filming for more than 8 weeks … each show is an 8 day endeavor meaning they’ll need 10 – 12 weeks, depending on how many Saturdays they work. But even so, a 3-month filming scehdule wouldn’t keep any of them from filming a non-cable network show which generally shoot the other 9 months of the year -assuming the show in question makes it to air and has a full season order, which is a long shot. But regardless of whether this pilot is a success, I think Psych could continue beyond season 8 WITH Maggie Lawson … the very worst that would probably happen is that she would become a guest star rather than a regular cast member. And I don’t see Maggie wanting to leave the show at this point so *if* the show is not ending for sure with season 8, I would assume that it’s already been worked out as to what will happen if both shows were to be picked up for concurrent seasons. Whatever happens, Psych has been a pure joy, and I will be sad to see it go whenever the time comes, but I will always wish nothing but good things for such a talented, wonderful cast. So congrats to Maggie! Here’s hoping we’ll be watching her on not one, but two, great shows!
C’mon, Son!
the Cullens are HORRIBLE writers. this pilot will NEVER air.
I love Maggie Lawson.
I agree psych has been so under appreciated , my kids and I watch it all the time, my neighbor and I get all excited for the Wednesday showing on USA , I have to say its one of my favorite shows to watch and I’m always bragging about it !
Don’t end Psych. At least let Jules & Shawn get married… End of a happy note!
Psych is just plain fun. My family enjoys it and it is nice to have a goofy, simple fun show like this. This is what I grew up with , like the Monkees! Hey Psych should do a Monkee tribute show, they are doing everything else. That would be a great fit.
I used to ADORE Psych, but the writing has taken a serious downturn the past few seasons. I’d be thrilled if they got rid of Juliet (the entire Shawn/Jules story arc is HORRIBLE!!!!!!) and continued on for another season, getting back to what made Psych great in the first three seasons. Stop making the damn show about Shawn/Juliet, and ignoring the whole point of the series – Shawn’s gift for observation – and STOP with the disgusting, insane storylines (joking about EATING a “dead” Lassiter?! SERIOUSLY!?!!??!). I miss the smart, funny, entertaining writing of the first seasons.
Jane, you have a very valid point. I’m still a fan, but I do find the earlier episodes better.
Agreed! Psych would be ok without her, they just have to bring Abigail back
Maggie Lawson is arguably the cutest girl on television.
Cobie Smulders is gorgeous but Maggie takes the cake.
