Year-end hits including Sony’s Skyfall, Lionsgate’s The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2, and Warner Bros’ The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey helped propel the year’s average ticket price to $7.96, which is a new all-time high (not adjusted for inflation) but up just 3 cents from 2011 according to data out today from the National Association of Theatre Owners. The growth rate, at 0.4%, is close to 2011′s 0.5% — and contrasts with the steep growth in previous years including 5.2% in 2010, 4.5% in 2009, and 4.4% in 2008. But the growth pace accelerated at the end of 2012: Tickets sold for an average of $8.05 in Q4, which is up 2.8% vs the same three month period in 2011. That’s the biggest quarterly jump since fall 2011. The average price in Q3 was $7.78, a 2% drop from the previous year. Ticket prices hit the high point for the year in Q2 when they reached $8.12, up 0.7% from 2011. Last week Regal, the largest exhibition chain, reported that it raised the average ticket price for a 2D movie by 3.3% in Q4, but that was offset by a decline in the percentage of box office revenues from premium ticket sales for large screen and 3D movies. They accounted for 14% of the company’s Q4 box office revenue, down from 17% in the period in 2011.

$20. for Top Gun 3D and $18. for Life of Pi 3D at the AMC Empire 25 in Times Square.
They’re out of their fucking minds.
It cost the two of us $34 to see LIFE OF PI in 3D — outrageous! Fortunately, we enjoyed the movie. But it makes tolerating the texting and talking by the younger folks in the theater less … tolerable. For $34, STFU and turn your phone off!!
At these prices — seriously — we’ll wait till it comes out on Blu-ray.
Seriously, in what universe can you go to a first run theater for $8?!?! I pay $12-16 per ticket myself. That means for every ticket I buy, someone else is paying $4 to make that average. WTF.
um, yes, i just want to agree! presently it’s usually $13.50 in NYC… yet the Theatre Owners website publishes the average ticket price at about $7.50 and this site is saying similar. ????
Why are movie theaters accelerating their own demise? Home entertainment is only getting better and the ability to stream films has armed the viewers with a library of choices.
Wish it was $8.. haven’t gone to a movie theatre in quite some time… $12 price per person or more
I live in LA…I buy ticket passes through my old building concierge (which anyone can take advantage of)…AMC are 7.50 or 6.00, Pacific are 6.00, Regal is 7.00. Costco had a ten pack of gold passes (good for any movie except imax/3d – those you pay upcharge) for 72, or 7.20 a ticket.
And I don’t buy popcorn or soda. I’m not sure why people feel the need to drink and eat during a movie…I don’t at home!
Regal has a free program where you get rewards for certain dollars spent.
I grew up in NYC, and in the early eighties movies were 5-6 dollars to sit in a crappy theatre (save Ziegfield and a few others)…thirty years later I can pay only a buck or two more, get great stadium seating, much better sound and video quality. Most places I visit have free parking too! Personally, I think it’s one of the few entertainment bargains left in this country. Compare it to sports or the theatre!
Too bad most of the movies stink! I still go once or twice a week, though, because I love going to the movies
I have not gone to a movie theater in years.Surprisingly,I have not missed it. What’s to miss? People talking or standing during the movie? People talking on cellphones? A word of advice:If you wanna be on the phone-don’t go to the movies & let cinema goers actually enjoy the film in peace. Personally,I watch my movies on my home entertainment system nowadays. If I’m going to spend $20 on a movie(not including traveling costs, food, etc, etc.) the actors/actresses had better come act out a few scenes at my house.Just saying…
Taking a family to the movies (and maybe dinner) used to be an affordable thing one could do off the cuff. My wife and I took our little one to a matinee at the end of the summer and dropped $50 while actively trying to be frugal (purposely chose a somewhat lower priced theatre, off-peak daytime show, etc.). After the tix and some popcorn, drinks and candy it pretty much shot down going out for dinner too after…
Even a great movie experience loses its luster at a certain price point and we are definitely there.
Luckily, AMC theaters have $6. matinees before noon ($7. in Manhattan and LA) so that alone is a pretty good deal. Regal and others have matinee pricing in most places (not Manhattan!) but not as cheap as AMC.
Hundreds of angry filmmakers are getting ready to sue IMDB for their unfair ratings system.
IMDB purposefully places a higher emphasis on those that give the movies a ’1′ thus bringing down the overall rating.
The median is always higher.
IMDB’s rating methods are completely and totally flawed and skewed to favor studio films (their main advertisers) while diminishing the reputation of stellar indie films that have averages in the 3.5 – 6.5 (horrible ratings).
The negative impact of this is:
1) Loss of sales (Blockbuster, Netflix, Redbox, foreign sales, etc)
2) Loss of reputation
3) Loss of visibility
4) Loss of future investors.
