EXCLUSIVE: Gaumont International Television and Netflix may soon be re-teaming for a drama series about notorious Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar. GIT is producing one of Netflix’s first original series, Eli Roth’s monster thriller Hemlock Grove, which premieres April 19. Now the U.S.-based production arm of European feature studio Gaumont has teamed with another feature director, Brazilian-born Jose Padilha, for Narcos. The series will chronicle the life a
nd death of Escobar, the ruthless boss of the Medellin Cartel and a known terrorist who was also a congressman, a family man and revered by the poor as a new Robin Hood. Padilha, on whose idea the project is based, is slated to oversee and direct the
13-episode first season, which is eying a 2014 debut on Netflix. Doug Miro & Carlo Bernard (Sorcerer’s Apprentice) are writing. Eric Newman (Children Of Men) will executive produce.
Padilha, whose gritty Elite Squad thrillers were big box office hits in Brazil, is making his Hollywood directing debut with Sony/MGM’s upcoming RoboCop reboot. Newman has worked with both GIT and Padilha and likely helped get them together — he serves as executive producer on Hemlock Grove and producer on RoboCop. In addition to the Famke Janssen-starring Hemlock Grove, which is wrapping production, GIT also is finishing filming drama series Hannibal for NBC and is working on its Barbarella series, which is already garnering strong interest from U.S. networks.
Netflix is in the midst of a major expansion into original series with House Of Cards, which just launched, and the upcoming Hemlock Grove, Ricky Gervais’ Derek and a new season of Arrested Development.

Vinny Chase!
Vinn–damn.
Vinny – I’ve got this idea – we’ll call the film Medellin, it will be huge… all in Spanish with English subtitles. Don’t tell E or Ari, they won’t like it – they don’t understand high art. We may even have a job for your brother Johnny – can he speak spanish?
Very excited about this one… Jose’s films ELITE SQUAD 1 & 2 became my favorite films the first time I saw them.
Wow, this is a perfect project for Ben Affleck! He played a Mexican-American so well on Argo, I’d love to see what he does with a Colombian character….
wow, will netflix just go away already. they were great for renting good movies. now that they have no content they are trying to become a producer? what a waste. we don’t need netflix to create material. we needed netflix to be a place where we could find all the movies. now it’s just a mess.
go away netflix. please.
You’re an idiot… Have you not seen HOUSE OF CARDS?? better then most programs on TV and they try to creat about 20 different programs a year and Netflix came out winging with its first
You’re the idiot. HOC is just another BOSS remake. Nothing original.
… a remake of Boss? Pretty sure that House of Cards is a remake of House of Cards. There were dark political dramas well before Boss.
Who are you? You aren’t a real human person, right?
House of Cards is actually good. Not great, but highly enjoyable.
Netflix are about to become the Next Big Production Company after their success with ‘House of Cards’ . Aother companies need to watch out
You must be kidding me OR you have your head up your butt! Netflix is giving everyone a run for their money and creating not only a new place to produce amazing content but a whole new model that could make cable pay TV obsolete. The future is coming, jump on board for $9.99 a month VOD or continue paying $50 for 1/2 good 1/2 crap reruns on a schedule! Keep up the awesome work Netflix!
Netflix is upping the ante for TV across the board now that House of Cards is a hit, and good, since the business model of TV is a mess. Broadcast can’t figure out how to compete with cable and is losing too many viewers for the ad-based business model, while cable is hostage to the insane greed of sports, driving up costs and leading to cord cutting – maybe not a big factor now, but we all know how quickly things can change.
Netflix can deliver original programming AND movies, all at a very reasonable price even if you’re on a streaming + DVD plan. Compare that bill with ever escalaing cable costs.
But what they really need now is a killer app TV series, the kind that non-subscribers just can’t ignore. I’d like to see them do sme high profile sci fi series with an existing following. Star Trek would be the ideal, but even a lower profile brand like Firefly or adapting a popular book series a la Game of Thrones could work as well.
Why not tell a story about a Mexican cartel boss? They’ve got a lot more power than Escobar. The Colombia drug thing is tired and outdated
bc Escobar is a historical figure vs. they don’t want to be made into menudo for portraying living Mexican drug lords?
You are right Anon2. Also because EVERYONE in the world knows Escobar, plus the Colombian (unfortunately) drug cartel history is the originator of the trade, and there is a fascination with this. Just recently, in Colombia, a novela called ESCOBAR: El Patron Del Mal came out and was a HUGE success, so much that they also showed it in the US on a Spanish language channel and was also a HUGE success. Now, NetFlix wants a piece of that action. I just hope they do it good and not make us Colombians look bad like most all Hollywood films.
What are the stats on ‘House of Cards’ so far? Has Netflix released any usage/viewership results?
The handsome and very talented Venezuelan actor Edgar Ramirez was born to play PABLO ESCOBAR!
About Medellin, Colombia: The locals in Medellin, affectionately known as ‘paisas’ are overwhelmingly generous and extremely friendly and very eager to show off their beautiful country to all foreigners alike. The ghost of Pablo Escobar continues to dominate world headlines whenever the media writes about Colombia.
Netflix what a money suck. You are absorbing way too many costs. The Colombian story is OLD news and not relevant anymore. Its the Mexican cartel that’s more interesting. Clearly you don’t have any media experts on your team. Just a bunch of engineers……
Pablo Emilio Escobar Gavaira (December 1, 1949 – December 2, 1993)
Netflix should take advantage of the twenty year anniversary of the death of Pablo Escobar by releasing the premiere epsiode of Narco on December 2, 2013.
@Eman, “Its the Mexican cartel that’s more interesting.”
I think not. You obviously don’t know much about the history of Pablo Escobar and the Medellin Cartel.
