This is a clever marketing move for the streaming service, which costs $7.99 a month in the U.S. Netflix says this morning that for the month of February it will enable non-subscribers to see the first episode of its first original series, House Of Cards, at this web address. Members can see all 13 episodes of the political drama that stars Kevin Spacey, Robin Wright and Kate Mara beginning today. Investors and analysts will be looking to see how the production affects Netflix’s subscriptions. The company enables new customers to try the service for one month free, and doesn’t restrict people’s ability to drop out. “Because we make it easy, they don’t feel trapped by a contract and it’s very easy for them to come back in the service when their lifestyle warrants signing up again,” CFO David Wells told analysts in a conference call last month. Execs talked down the likely benefit from House Of Cards. “Some of us are optimistic that it may in fact be substantial, but we really don’t know and we don’t want to count on it until it happens,” CEO Reed Hastings said. Wells added that marketing efforts will be focused on “influencers in big markets.” House Of Cards is produced by Media Rights Capital.

Just started HoC. It’s quite good so far. Beautifully shot and the scenes between Spacey and Wright are just electric. Definitely worth a shot.
I’m out.
Netflix is such a mess I want nothing to do with them. Ever try to find a movie with them? Other than Spider-Man? What once was the place to go for good stuff is now a grave-yard. Oh yeah, I’m out. Don’t care what they make.
Netflix spend 100M$ to create exclusive premium content and make a huge step toward addressing the “graveyard” issue, and you won’t even have a taste? Even a free taste? Seems a little silly.
A taste? Why? I came to them to find 99% of the movies I want to see. All of sudden that was gone. Why would I care what they do now. Seriously, I will never be involved with Netflix again. Anyway, soon enough there will be Apple TV sets. At that point everything will go through Itunes. Yes, Netflix may continue to be a producer of show ie; House of Cards but they will no longer be a real player. I want to see movies. Curios, where do you go to find ie; rent, stream your movies? I’m guessing like me you have to go to four or five different places and still then you may not find what you are looking for or it may only be on your PC etc.. Netflix had a chance to be the one stop shop for movies. Now I am more confused than ever. So I’m going to seek out Netflix again this time for a TV show. I’m out. Never.
I get that you’re not willing to try Netflix or their original programming, but: Netflix “will no longer be a real player”? Did you see the Netflix revenue report a week ago? They pulled down $945M in revenue and added 2M new subscribers.
And while I’m an Apple fanboy, I’m not sure there will ever be an Apple TV set. Samsung’s already made huge gains in the smartphone market–a market Apple pretty much created and used to monopolize. Doesn’t make much sense for Apple to try and compete in a tv set marketplace that’s already dominated by players like Samsung and that’s so mature and price-competitive.
Yes, I know they had a huge week. But as a Hollywood insider and Wall Street insider who is over 35 trust me, Netflix will not be a player. Within three years the whole playing will change. The fact that Netflix didn’t change the landscape or at least secure their place in it when they had the chance to a big mistake. Hasting is a horrible CEO. He blew it. Yes, succeed beyond but on the scale he is you either become a Bezos or Mark Cuban or you get pushed aside. The end is coming. This producing original programming is not only small minded but desperate. It’s not their business. Sure they may end up with a hit. So may Aaron Kaplan. This is beans when you are talking Yahoo and Amazon and Apple. Stay away from Netflix. It’s a failing company tossing money to try and stay relevant ie; Kevin Spacey.
Why can’t I add the series to my queue? I can stream episode 1, but it won’t let me add them all to my queue for easy future selection.
Just guessing, but it may be because the first EP is viewable by non-subscribers who don’t have ques. I noticed that too.
There was another show that I couldn’t add to my queue. So, I “started” it on the computer (for less than a second), then went to the TV, and found it listed in “recently watched”.
A few days later, said show was available to add to my queue, I am guessing it was just a hiccup. But that’s a work-around.
House of Cards is an awful show.
I cannot find it on Netflix at all and I’ve been a member for over 2 years. I only get the original British version from 1990 when I search for it. Help.
