What comes after the professional football careers of NFL players? For some of them it might be Hollywood. Twenty-two current and former NFL players have signed up for the second annual NFL Pro Hollywood Boot Camp. Directed by NFL Player Engagement
and New York-based Film Life Inc., the March 11-15 event will provide a wide-ranging crash course on creative disciplines in the film industry including screen writing, directing, producing, and film financing. Session leaders include Legendary Pictures partner-producer and member of the Pittsburgh Steelers ownership group Thomas Tull (The Dark Knight, Inception, We Are Marshall), director-producer Peter Berg (Friday Night Lights), and writer-actor-director Robert Townsend (The Five Heartbeats, Hollywood Shuffle). This spring’s group of current and former NFL players will include 2005 NFL MVP Shaun Alexander (Seattle, Washington DC) and four active first-round draft picks – Darrius Heyward-Bey (Raiders), Alex Mack (Browns) Gerald McCoy (Bucs), and Jared Odrick (Dolphins). Participants will have the opportunity to shoot and edit a short film at Universal.
Additional current and former NFL players enrolled in the upcoming boot camp are Ramses Barden (NY Giants), Hank Baskett (Vikings, Eagles), Desmond Bishop (Packers), Phillip Buchanon (former Raiders, Texans, Buccaneers, Lions, Redskins), Drew Carter (former Panthers), Carey Davis (former Colts, Falcons, Steelers), Justin Fargas (former Raiders), Derek Hagan (former Raiders), and Ben Leber (former Chargers, Vikings, Rams). Also Ryan McBean (Ravens), Ryan McNeil (former Lions, Rams, Browns, Cowboys, Chargers, Broncos), Zoltan Mesko (Patriots), Brandon Miree (former Packers), Marcus Price (former Chargers, Saints, Bills, Cowboys), L.J. Shelton (former (Cardinals, Browns, Dolphins, Chargers), Walter Thurmond (Seahawks), and Justin Tryon (Giants).

Gotta love this!! To see HWD go outside the box! Outside their comfort zone! To truly believe that filmmakers, storytellers, actors, producers, directors, writers come from all walks of life — especially the poor and struggling, working middle class…OUTSIDE of LA; outside of the limelight and celebrityism and money class — and find true, unknown talent they need to nourish, shape, help elevate not just to the betterment of HWD products…but the cinematic manguage of the world: MOVIES!! Thank you HWD! Thank you for going to these unknown, poor artists formerly in the NFL! They need a helping hand! They need doors open by people like BERG on the inside…who are doing it only for the reason of giving an unknown a chance!! Thank you HWD! God bless you HWD!! For not just making my day; but waking me up and tearing me away from my ego, my insecurities and my fears!! Thank you HWD! For making me finally realize what it’s like to be human!
This is ridiculous for two reasons:
1) NFL players already had their big break by getting drafted and now Hollywood is giving them another?! They need to take their millions, move on, and let someone more deserving get a break.
2) Football players are about as creative as a bag of hammers.
Love the concept. I know Miss Ghana Wilson is heading this up.
Saw some coverage. Brandon Miree is a natural on camera.
