UPDATED: At the Nickelodeon upfront presentation in New York this afternoon, Viacom CEO Philippe Dauman said that the kids cable network, which has gone through some rough times lately, “has hit the reset button” and is “reinventing itself.” There will be a big investment in animation, including the company’s upcoming feature offshoots of Nick toon series, the SpongeBob Square Pants 3D movie and the Michael Bay-directed Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, both slated for a 2014 release. Coincidentally, Nick’s upfront announcements today were all in the animation arena — a series pickup for Breadwinners, a new animated series based on the animated short by animator Gary “Doodles” DiRaffaele and writer Steve Borst (Mad), and a third season renewal for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. DiRaffaele and Borst, who came from Nickelodeon’s Animation Shorts Program, are also behind the Nickelodeon series about two booty-shaking ducks, which has received a 20-episode order. (watch the short below). Breadwinners joins recently picked up new live-action series The Haunted Hathaways, The Thundermans and Sam & Cat.
During the presentation, Nickelodeon Group president Cyma Zarghami acknowledged that the network has had a “tough year” where “new competitors came on strong,” a reference to upstart Disney Jr. She outlined the network’s strategy for getting back on track by targetting “post-millennial kids,” born in and after 2008.

What happened to this network? We used to be good, right? You guys in NY need moving boxes?
wow. worst thing i’ve ever seen. not in a million years would i let my kids watch this. what’s worse — not in a million years would my kids WANT to watch this. with so many good cartoons out there — why air this nonsense?
Their live action shows are pretty much dead; all they have left are cartoons. Pretty soon it will be all SpongeBob, all the time.
Cyma thought 2012 was “tough”? Based on this clip above, 2013 is gonna be worse! When is Viacom going to wise up and lose her? The arrogance of the network starts from the head and they won’t regain their place until they cut off the head of the beast.
Breadwinners tries so hard to be funny, and it shows. Painful to watch even the short clip embedded here. Won’t even bother to check out how the 30-minute version turns out.
The TMNT series is my favorite reboot so far. Glad to see they’re getting a third season.
I have a theory that if an animated Ninja Turtles TV series premieres, it’ll be a hit; and considering that the first season of this new version isn’t finished, getting instantly renewed for a 2nd and then 3rd season while the 1st season has just started is something new.
“You can’t produce, market and over aggressively program mediocre cartoons down kids throats 24/7 and then simply expect them to like it.” said Phineas to Ferb in 2007.
If they had any brains they’d bring back classics like Rocko’s Modern Life. Heck, even AAAAAAHHHHH Real Monsters was more appealing than the garbage they program these days.
It’s not just them, though. Disney Jr is not gift either, and I have all those channels locked out at my house. Wow Wow Wubsy, Rubber Dubbers, and the rest of that garbage talks to kids like they are mouth breathing morons. The writers for all these “kids” programs should have their offices checked for gas leaks and lead paint.
Aside from Dora and Diego (I don’t need my 5 year old asking for Leche, thanks.) PBS is still the standard for children’s programming.
Wow, some harsh comments. I thought it was funny!
A lot of jealous Haters. I thought it was great and can’t wait for the series. My kids loved it and said it was Quazzy!!!!!!
Unless you haters are 9 years old, I’m pretty sure Nickelodeon doesn’t care if you watch it or not…
They are now targeting 4-year-olds.
The re-boot of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was one of the smartest moves I’ve seen Nickelodeon make in years. The show appeals to every member of my family – young and old. It’s a truly entertaining show.
The Micheal Bay movie however might be a huge mistake – He is talking about making the 25year-old turtles into aliens. Long time fans are gonna flip and as a mom I’m not to crazy about Megan Fox playing April O’Neil. Why have a sex kitten in a kids movie?
I’ll be sticking with the TV show & probably won’t be seeing the movie if the net rumours all prove true. Which is a shame.
I won’t be watching nor will my kids. Nickelodeon should care.
All the classic cartoon and they wanna keep creating these asinine live action shows. You know there is no harm with going back to the old cartoons I mean they were the “breadwinners” of my era(90′s)why not try it again. Culture our new era of children.
I’m in the age range for this show and I think it looks dull. I
I’m just going to watch Disney like I usually do.
To be honest, Breadwinners does not look like a bad cartoon. It is DEFINITLEY better than reruns of SpongeBob SquarePants on Nickelodeon. It dosen’t live up to truly amazing cartoons on the network such as Rugrats, Doug, and Ren & Stimpy, but it is funnier than the newest SpongeBob episodes, and those SpongeBob episodes (the ne ones) are just asinine. So i think Breadwinners could help the channel along just a bit with viewership and ratings. If possible, it could replace SpongeBob as the center cartoon.
Breadwinners looks to have the potential to be a great show for Nick. It’s a refreshing look for a show, with new ideas in the age of reboots. It’s time for Nick to start having cartoon shows your parents don’t want you to watch again.
Wasn’t that Fanboy and ChumChum?
tmnt is awesome though and it was great for nick to bring it back.
Parents want quality educational shows but nick, Disney and advertisers keep pushing crap and sass. Why? Who knows. All you have to do is read some Facebook newsfeed to see what people want
