EXCLUSIVE: Nicole David, a stalwart talent agent for Triad and WMA, is leaving WME. She is not retiring, but hasn’t yet figured out if she will resurface as an agent or a manager, or a producer for that matter. David has been an important figure for women in the industry, rising to prominence at a time when there weren’t that many in top jobs. David and Arnold Rifkin formed Rifkin/David in 1982, and a decade later sold that agency for upwards of $25 million to WMA. She has been at that agency ever since, continuing after its merger with Endeavor. In that time, she helped build the movie careers of talent that included the late Patrick Swayze and Whitney Houston, and her current list includes: Alicia Keys, Elijah Wood, Emma Thompson, Jaden Smith, Julia Andrews, Linda Hunt, Melanie Griffith, Rihanna and Willow Smith.
David started her career in acting and is still a member of The Actors Studio. She also voiced the role of the bespectacled sleuth Velma in the animated Hanna-Barbera series Scooby-Doo. She has also helped launch a lot of careers, giving early jobs to an impressive list of women that includes Stacey Snider, Hylda Queally, Michelle Bohan, Carla Hacken, Tracey Jacobs and Ilene Feldman, to name a few.
David today told the WME staff that she would be leaving, and she will take a nice vacation before she decides on the next career adventure. She has never been much for press or showing off in general, but in that meeting she did give herself some credit, acknowledging she had “done okay for a so-so actress with a high school education.”

For the record, she gave me this statement: “In my 3½ years at William Morris Endeavor, it has been extraordinary to be a part of what Ari, Patrick, and the entire WME family have built. I’m grateful for the experience and I’m very proud of our accomplishments. I look forward to creating new projects and continuing to give this industry that I love the best I have to offer.”

Whatever Nicole chooses to do, I’m sure she’ll be great at it. She’s one of the best.
Nicole worked extraordinarly hard to gain the stature and status afforded her. She was one tough and determined agent. She worked very hard for her clients, and she deserves a vacation, but I doubt seriously that she will be idle for long. I suspect next week we will be hearing of beginning words of that Next Chapter. Best wishes to you, Nicole. Break a leg!
Nicole,
You are one of a kind! I bow to your accomplishments not only in the industry, but as who your heart and soul represents. My love, devotion and lasting friendship. Lots of fun ahead…XO L.
Great woman. Worked with her at Triad and WMA, and she is first class all the way. She is quite the survivor, and now she should have some fun away from the sharks. Congratulations on a fantastic and long career.
One of the best. Super nice and a total killer.
Nicole is amazing woman who has accomplished so much. I am sure we will hear a big announcement in the not-too-distant future. She has been a mentor and inspiration to many. Here’s to the next chapter!

Of course Nicole should take credit & show off-she was Velma dammit!! She was the smartest one in that group surrounded by a Ken doll,an airhead,an apparently high dopefiend & a dog who couldn’t stop eating. Scooby-doo my ass!-It was Velma who solved every case! Velma was fuckin’ awesome! I wish this woman the best in all her future endeavors. All the best Nicole!!!
The genuine article. And a really great person.
One of the most accessible people I’ve ever dealt with.
I don’t mean to sound like a know it all but have heard she joining Jeff Berg’s Resolution…???
As one of Nicole’s former assistants (she was my very first “Hollywood boss!”), I can confidently say I know this woman well. I’ve been to her house, driven her car, booked her appointments, met with her clients, ordered her lunch, hugged her when her dog passed away, and watched her work her magic on the town each and every day. And I know her to be a person who is strong, smart, courageous, generous, humble, and just a little bit crazy (in a good way, of course). She’s also always, always tough as nails.
She doesn’t take B.S. from *anybody,* and I’ve honestly never met anyone like her before in my entire life. Working for her was the hardest job I’ve ever had, or likely ever will have, but she taught me the business from the ground up. Even when I accidentally dropped a call on my very first day and hung up on Elijah Wood, she gave me a chance to prove myself. I cried, a lot, that first year, but when I look back, I have nothing but kind words to say about this woman.
She fought incredibly hard for her clients, always seeking to promote diversity–not just pay lip service to diversity, but actively pursuing clients (and assistants!) from diverse backgrounds.
When bigtime casting directors said the role was for a Caucasian actor only, Nicole asked “how come? Why does the role needs to be white? Ever think about so-and-so? Because you should.”
When a producer insinuated her perfectly healthy client needed to lose 10 pounds, Nicole got on the phone and said “are you crazy? Leave my girl alone, her butt is fine and she’s gorgeous.”
When I was logging crazy hours and the company refused to pay me overtime, she paid me OT out of her own pocket. When I got a new job, she bought me a fancy haircut so I’d feel confident on my first day. When I got really, really sick–as in, called her from the E.R. in pain and scared–she dropped what she was doing to call every high profile doctor in her address book and got me an appointment the very next day at a doctor’s office with a six month waiting list. That is the kind of person she is. She wasn’t the easiest boss to work for, but she cared. She believed in people. If she believed in you, she’d work her ass off for you.
She was a valuable asset as an agent and I’m sure the company will miss her. Nicole, if you’re reading this, whatever you do next, wherever you go next, I know you’ll be a force of nature when you get there. Thank you for being such a great role model and inspiration. I’m sorry I hung up on Elijah that first day, but I’ll never hang up on you.
Love,
-N
If your assistant still loves you after days, let alone years, you’re pretty awesome.
This is quite a lovely story and comment.
Absolutely lovely….
That’s a lovely and honest tribute.
Thank you everyone – I appreciate all your nice comments on my tribute. I’m glad I was able to share a few good stories about this remarkable woman.

Back in the 1990s, I was placed on Nicole’s desk through a temp agency because she was having difficulty holding onto a second assistant. I was warned she was a “nightmare” and “difficult”. At the end of my first day, she walked me out to the parking structured and promised, “If you do right by me, I promise I will do right by you”. After two years of “boot camp” on her desk, she helped secure me a development job with a client’s production company, and remained my mentor and ally until I left the business several years later. In an industry where there is seldom any loyalty, much less honesty, Nicole proved to be not just an extraordinary boss and mentor, but a generous, sensitive, loyal friend. And any of her assistants who did right by her could testify by this as well. Her innate humility may have made her less well-known than some of her female counterparts, but none will ever match the client list she wielded over the years. I hope she takes a really long vacation, far away from the phones, and gets to come back doing whatever she wants to do, on her own terms. She has more than earned it!
i would like to note that in all of years that i have followed deadline. this is the first time i have ever seen an agent (or any executive for that matter) do something that is covered and not receive a single bad comment by the peanut gallery which can be so mean. Speaks volumes to how awesome Nicole is.
Not the first time, but agreed. Speaks volumes.
LOL… “done okay for a so-so actress with a high school education.” I love that, given everything she’s accomplished.
Never heard of Ms. David, found this article randomly while searching career opps. Just the kinda inspiration I needed, thanx.
My time on her desk was one of the most influential, riveting, and fun periods of my entire life. She truly loved her clients and her assistants. I can’t really convey in words here what an extraordinary person she is, and what it was like to work so closely with her and learn from her, kill yourself for her (she didn’t like that part) and love every minute of it.
It’s been years since I answered the phones “Nicole David’s office!” but I still think of her all the time.
She is an incredible awesome classy woman.
It is very interesting that 3 agents have left WME in the past week… what is going on?
I call Nicole my Fairy Godmother !!!! She (as a favor to one of her clients) paired me with my FIRST agent (Aaron Kaplan) at WIlliam Morris. She was so, so , so encouraging. Aaron on the other hand NEVER returned calls or bothered to remember my name or even acknowledge that I was alive for that matter. BUT Nicole continued to answer my calls. She would answer it today if I called her. She’s just a genuinely GOOD person. Honest to a fault. Would tell you if she didn’t like the material. Would bite your head off if need be. But only if need be. I feel lucky to have had her as part of my Hollywood fabric. She probably doesn’t know just how much she’s done for me and then again she probably knows But unlike most hollywood folk, she’s confident and secure enough that she doesn’t need the credit!!!!! I sure hope she continues in her next chapter to do what she does BEST and very well. That is… make stars BIG and small SHINE!!!!!

Rooby-doo! I remember Velma aka Nicole back when we were solving mysteries every Saturday morning. She was kind to me then, always feeding me Scooby snacks.
Sure, when she became an agent, I wish she had gotten me work in the Lassie reboot. I can do more than cartoons. But at least she tried.
I am sad to learn of Nicole’s retirement from WME, as I have spent years trying to find an agent I could trust in the industry to compliment my vision as a young, tenacious female Director. Having started my career as an assistant for Mick Jagger & Geena Davis, the multiple accolades from her former assistants speak volumes about her character and charisma. Looking forward to hearing where her passion takes her next via @DeadlineCom. Cheers Nicole & Nikki.
Many years ago, I went to work as an assistant for one of Nicole’s producer clients. I was a bit scared of Nicole over the phone, but after a few months I bravely went to visit the WMA offices to say hi to her assistants. This petite woman (she sounded 6 feet tall on the phone!) stepped out of her office, gave me a big hug and told me how great I was for her client. From that day on, I have loved and respected Nicole as a tough-as-nails, but loving mentor.
She is a best friend/mother/staunchest supporter to every single one of her clients, and I can honestly say there is no other agent like her. I think I may have a good guess what her plans are, but I look forward to hearing what is next for the amazing Nicole David!
Dear Nicole,
If you are reading this, you know who I am. *Hint..I can’t spell and I am tall.
Thank you for taking a chance on me when everyone else was scared to! Thank you for giving me the support I needed since day 1. I love you with all my heart and hope whoever has the pleasure of working with you values you as much as we all do(The NDAsst family). Being your number 1, was an honor. I will always be here to protect you.
XO B
Nicole David is THE most respected and trusted agents I’ve ever worked with. Several years ago, when I was leaving Fenton-Feinberg Casting to go out on my own, she told me “Don’t ever let it go to your head, stay humble, and return everybody’s call”.
Her kindness to me throughout my career has been something I could always count on. I cannot wait to see what her next move is and know that she deserves all the happiness that’s coming to her!
Well done Nicole!!
The fairer sex Stan Kamen. Nicole, you are simply the best and I agree with the person above–No agent alive yet has received so many positive Deadline comments in a row. You simply brought out the best in all of us–and reminded us by example when we erred.
Nicole David’s integrity, intelligence, loyalty and charm deserves to be celebrated. I love reading all the testimonials, and I am not surprised by the 100% tomatometer. I have had so much fun collaborating with Nicole all these years and look forward to the next exciting chapter in her remarkable career.
A class act. A fighter and tough as nails. An amazing woman. Always returned calls. Stellar. WME has lost a good one. She is one for the books.
