Put away your copy of Benjamin Graham’s The Intelligent Investor. Why not plan for your retirement by taking stock advice from 16-year-old Desperate Housewives actress Rachel Fox? She was on CNBC today promoting her day-trading obsession (she’s said to have had a 30.4% return last year) and her Fox on Stocks website. “It’s such an awesome concept…I usually go on technicals,” she says. Instead of betting on companies like Apple — it’s “always swayed by someone’s opinion,” she says — Fox prefers Chinese social media company Sohu.com and Anadarko Petroleum. “I just had a great short sell the other day on Tiffany.”

Cannes: Well Go USA Lands N.A. Rights To ‘On The Job’ http://t.co/k6xAjnxVtWAbout 10 hours ago

Cut to: Five months from now. She is broke and starring in a reality show which deals with how she is handling poverty.
“I just had a great short sell the other day on Tiffany.”
Way to make money on that downward spiral.
There were similar stories about Shia LeBeouf’s trading prowess prior to the release of WS2: Money Never Sleeps. I’d love to see Rachel bring her passion for finance into the entertainment realm as she progresses.
Hmmm. What an interesting post. I had so many different reactions reading it. At first, I laughed along with David because it seems ridiculous that a 16 year old actress from Desperate Housewives could know anything about trading stocks. But, then I asked myself why is that ridiculous? Is it because she is 16? Is it because she is female? Is it because she is an actress? Is it because she is on a show called Desperate Housewives (a title that conditions me to think of women in a negative way)? Then I realized that I was buying into a load of ageist, sexist, crap. If there’s a 16 year old out there who is into trading stocks, she should be celebrated. Way to go Rachel Fox!
+1
I hesitate to comment too much because I realize she’s a young girl and is getting a lot of press all at once; however, it’s ridiculous to consider her an expert at picking stocks. That’s not what she’s doing. As the interview highlights, she’s in and out of positions quickly and is playing the volatility of the market. Calling it a “bet” was the most intelligent thing she said, because what she is doing is much more akin to playing online poker than it is to understanding the stock market. Of course, there are many traders that work like this, but it has nothing to do with understanding the fundamentals of a company or “investing” in a stock. She had a good run apparently, but just like sitting down at the blackjack table, those odds will even out over time. What bothers me the most is that I’m afraid for a generation of teens who know her from her work, this may become their introduction to what the stock market is all about. Might as well just take a road-trip to Vegas.
While I know it’s not as easy as she makes it out to be, I was quite impressed with some of the things she talked about in her CNBC interview. However, I would say that these things that she is talking about are not for most people because of 1) available funds 2) available time 3) emotional fortitude. I’m probably missing a few attributes as well but these are just off the top of my head. However, to say that it is impossible that she can actually have these kinds of returns or someone her age can actually understand these things, that is probably not giving her enough credit. This is assuming that her returns were legitimate. I’m sure very few people know this but actress Michele Williams won relatively high profile futures trading contest (high profile within the futures trading world) when she was a teenager. Of course, her father is a pretty famous futures trader (Larry Williams) so she obviously learned it from him. But to say someone young can’t learn how to do it or am unable to do it is just not true. It may not be a common thing but it certainly can be done.
What a Zombierobot.
And don’t forget: She is a actress, her job is to lie. And she says somewhere on “her” blog, that she really enjoys working, so she really enjoys lying.
Next they will show us chickens that can trade. “It’s so easy, every one can do it.”
Thank God I am past all this, learned my lesson the hard way. Thanks to people like Rachel.
