Fox’s American Idol continues its slide, logging a third consecutive week of in-season Wednesday lows. Last night’s two-hour show posted a 3.8/11 among adults 18-49, down 7% from last Wednesday, and 13.1 million viewers, down 8%. Last night’s 3.8 demo rating (which will likely be adjusted up to a 3.9 in the finals), last Wednesday’s 4.1 and the Wednesday before’s 4.3 now rank as the three lowest in-season Wednesday results for Idol. Overall, it was Idol‘s worst Wednesday performance since the show’s very first cycle, which aired in summer 2002 — the smallest audience since August 14, 2002 and lowest adults 18-49 rating since July 3, 2002. It also matched all-time Wednesday lows in adults 18-34.
Meanwhile, ABC’s Modern Family (3.9/10) matched its fast national from last week to post its first 18-49 win over Idol. (Both series will likely go up a tenth in the finals, leaving Modern Family as No. 1 for the night.) Modern Family‘s lead-out, Suburgatory, (2.3/6) perked up, growing 15% from last week, but the network’s other Wednesday series were down. The Middle (2.1/6) was down 5% from its fast national last week, 9% from the final. The Neighbors (1.7/5) was down 11%, and Nashville (1.6/4) was down 11% from its last original two weeks ago to a series low.
CBS veteran Survivor (2.6/8) was up 8% from last week, building on that all-time low premiere to rank as the No. 3 program of the night in 18-49 and No. 1 on CBS, tied with Criminal Minds (2.6/7), which was flat with last week and tied its series low. CSI (1.8/5) gave back the gains from last week when it faced a Katie Couric special on ABC instead of Nashville, down 22%. NBC’s Whitney (1.2/4) and Guys With Kids (1.1/3) were both up a tenth from last week. Law & Order: SVU (1.6/4) and Chicago Fire (1.9/5) were even, with the latter posting its first win over original CSI to top the 10 PM hour in the demo.
The CW’s Arrow (1.0/3 in 18-49) inched up from last week, while Supernatural (0.9/2) was flat.

It’s not looking good for American Idol these days…
I can foresee a scenario in which CSI ORIGINAL takes over for the soon-to-be-cancelled CSI: NY Fridays at 9, and CBS moving either Elementary or PERSON OF INTEREST to Wednesdays to make room for more comedy on Thursday. It’s becoming increasingly apparent that CBS is going to pick up MOM and the Untitled Greg Garcia Multi-Cam starring Arnett, Smoove, and Martindale as long as NBC don’t beat a dead horse with UP ALL NIGHT.
Chicago Fire is evolving into a really good show. Growing more sophisticated, and the cast is just so good. I hope they pull a Scandal and get significant attention for season 2.
The Neighbors, Guys with Kids and Suburgatory are astonishingly bad shows. Not a whiff of smart comedy anywhere to be found. The actors should get better material, the writers should get better guidance from the network execs and the network execs should get fired.
I agree with Suburgatory but I like guys with kids and neighbors. (I watch neighbors and DVR Guys With Kids.) Both shows I can watch with my ten year olds without cringing.
Too bad about AI, it’s format changed and it’s a better format to me. Nicki is a bit irritating because she hogs the table, but she is very wise with her criticism. All the judges are really good. I just don’t think the talent is that good. It seems the “freaks” (Zonetta and ZDA) seem to get a lot of unnecessary time. I’m sure there are some girls last night who don’t understand how in the heck Zonetta got through.
A lot of viewers, including yours truly, don’t understand the Zonetta thing. Almost everyone they said good-bye to last night was better than Zonetta.
I don’t get the Zonetta thing either. I think they’re basing it all one her backstory more than her actual talent. Although she wasn’t bad last night, but shes not trying out for a Broadway show. And Randy normally says that to hopefuls ,but he let her pass on the song choice
Chicago Fire has grown leaps and bounds from the pilot. It’s not groundbreaking but it is really good entertainment — fun action and compelling characters, surprisingly well done.
I watch Law and ORder SVU I think that show going cancel at end of the season
They totally jump the shark last night with Rhianna and Chris Brown relationship
there’s a reason Keith and Mariah are judges this season…their music careers are in a slump, and these rapidly declining tv ratings are not helping any
The cash cow is dying. They’ve strayed so far from the initial goal of finding TALENT and have focused more on squabbling judges and manufactured drama during Hollywood week. All for ratings, and it’s not working. I personally could learn to like the show again if they set aside a week for SONGWRITING.
Each contestant has a week to write and perform their own song with an original arrangement. They should also get rid of the sappy back-stories. Everyone’s got problems, and no one enjoys sitting around listening to people complaining about it. It doesn’t give viewers hope, it’s just annoying. I don’t care if your dog died, or if you’ve been in a car accident. I just want to hear some GOOD singing.
Nashville was just so good last night. I really hope ABC decides to move it to a more female-friendly night next season. This show belongs on Sunday nights!
Totally agree Mimi on moving the show to a new night…a good solid program but airing on the wrong night as this should be airing on Sunday nights at 9 PM CT as I know it would get some more eyeballs towards it. With the way ABC is scheduling new episodes in between reruns, it’s not helping the show either. This is cause for concern for the program at this time and needs to be rectified as soon as possible or it’s one season and done with.
IDOL is toast and Fox had better be wary of its expectations of X FACTOR as well. Be interesting to see how THE VOICE fares when it returns. Probably better than the other two.
Person of interest should take wednesday at 8 slot. Beverly hills cop at 9 and CM at 10.
Survivor in sundays and CSI in friday.
Just happy AI is starting to freefall as this show has been on the air way too long as it is and time for FOX to jettison this thing after this season, as it resembles a trainwreck right now.
Regarding Nashville, disappointed to see the show hitting a series low and this is not boding well for a possible second season renewal come the upfronts, but it also doesn’t help that ABC is airing a new episode every other week and then a rerun thereafter. There are eight episodes remaining this season and ABC didn’t even mention last night when the next new episode would air. They need to pick up some steam next month and in April if it expects to return in the fall, possibly on Sundays.
Love Nashville too!
Should the writers get guidance from the execs before they are fired, or is it a favor the execs do with their new free time? I mean you seemed to have figured out how to fix everything so we need to make sure its done correctly!!!
Stars CANNOT carry a show as panelists. Money is better speant on real experts who know and recognize talent. Money is better speant on making the contestants performances better.
I wish Nigel Lythgoe could see your comment and take it to heart, but he won’t and next season, if there is one, they will bring in more bickering celebrities.
Talent creates public interest, but the “talent” this season is the weakest it’s been in years. Angela and the blonde country singer and Devin will be the top three. All three sound good, but none are distinctive. If I were to hear a song from either of them on the radio, I wouldn’t know it was them. I guess that’s what ZOANETTE is for, but I don’t think shes distinctive. I think she’s like a watered down version of FANTASIA.
I LOVE Suburgatory! I don’t know what the other poster is talking about. It’s a GREAT show and a perfect fit with Modern Family. The writing and is witty and funny, and the ensemble of actors, supreme!! Hate The Middle and Neighbors. Talk about MEH! never watch it. Bleh!
I stopped watching AI last year but Modern Family has been a disappointment recently with barely any laughs….
NASHVILLE – is such a joy to watch. The interesting storylines flow well together, love the cast they assembled, and the musical performances are well integrated. Sad about the ratings. Don’t know if it’s such a good fit with the comedies. A Drama-night could work better.
I hope they’ll stick with it as is despite the current ratings. People could catch up during the break and season 2 could soar.
Niki has killed off AI this year. She is so irritating that all of my friends quit watching . And I just wish Mariah would put on a shirt! Like everyone else, I question their judgement by keeping Zonetta.
I want the old Idol back! Where’s Simon and Paula?it will never be the same.
I am anxious to see The Voice. Love Shakira and Usher. Think they will bring up the ratings!
I really don’t understand why they let so many good ones go and kept that annoying Zonetta, she is, the only reason that they kept her is they want to see who can ruin the ratings more that stupid
blonde Nikki or Zonetta, come on judge get with it or quit, the only good one on there is Mariah. I am beginning to think that Zonetta is Randy Jackson’s sister or something. I hope she is voted off the first week. Very disappointed with the show this year. If Nikki would just shut her mouth, she just goes on and on.
Can’t stand her.
I use to watch idol. This years judges are such a turn off. That why I turn my television to another channel. What were they thinking at FOX. I’m over idol & the bickering judges. (Nikki)
Love the Neighbors, Suburgatory, Last Man Standing and Malibu Country, all are light hearted and always have a “Leave it to Beaver” message. A great way to relax for a while after a long day and watching the national/world news which always shows how corrupt Washington is with our tax money.
