No surprise here — Twentieth Television just announced that its struggling freshman syndicated talker The Ricki Lake Show will not be renewed for the 2013-2014 season. Original episodes will continue to air through the end of the season. Along with CBS TV Distribution’s Jeff Probst, Ricki Lake never found an audience to support it in the long run as the two faced a glut of new talk shows last fall. A similar announcement for Jeff Probst should be coming soon. “While we are proud of the topics the program tackled including childhood obesity, life-after the military, divorce, and addiction we were simply not able to breakthrough the crowded talk show marketplace,” Stephen Brown, Twentieth TV’s EVP of programming & development said.
While Ricki Lake was a disappointment, Twentieth TV did well with freshman syndicated strip Dish Nation, which was recently renewed for a second season after scoring well with young demos. And the company just struck a deal for a summer test run of a Kris Jenner daily talk show on Fox stations this summer. “I am so proud of the shows we completed this season, sparking important conversations about everything from raising children to mental illness to suicide prevention to coming out,” Lake said. “I will continue to be an active and passionate voice for subjects that are close to my heart through a variety of platforms — and a return to my documentary filmmaking work with Abby Epstein.” Ricki Lake joins sophomore syndicated talk show Anderson Cooper Live, which also is ending its run this season. Freshmen Katie, from ABC-Disney; Steve Harvey and Trisha Goddard, from NBCU; and Dish Nation have been renewed.

Go Ricki! Go Ricki! — No seriously, go…
ROTFLOL!
Yes, Go off the air, Ricki! Bring back your old format-fighting teens, cheating spouses, etc! Whenever you tried to make serious crap, it failed. Whenever you brought on the fun shows, you prospered! What does this tell you, Ricki?
Death to all daytime tv talk shows!
They’re lame. Bring back Dark Shadows.

Agree whole-heartedly with this, except for Dark Shadows.
The only daily talker I would like to see is one starring Nikki Finke as host. She could do it in shadow or from a speaker phone (a la Charlie’s Angels-style).
I want network daytime tv to be the way it used to be when I was a kid:
That means: Little Rascals and Abbot & Costello shorts, supernatural soap operas, and Batman cartoons. And where did all the daytime game shows like Match Game and Family Feud disappear to?
How long are we going to milk this dead horse of a Phil Donahue format? There’s no such thing as a original morning/daytime television talk show anymore. It’s been done to death.
Let’s cancel ‘em all and rebuild utopia.

The executives at 20th who came up with this idea to revive the show should be ousted immediately. This was a terrible idea.
No, it was poorly executed. The girls & young women who grew up chanting “Go Ricki! Go Ricki!” back in the mid/late 90′s are working moms & housewives today — and should’ve been happy to revisit an old friend who, like them, had also grown up and had loftier concerns than the Miss All That competition. Unfortunately, it felt cheaply produced, from Day 1, and couldn’t possibly complete when these pastel-y snoozy daytime talk shows have been done to DEATH. It’s a shame really, a lot of people still really like her. This just wasn’t the right format and cheaply/poorly executed.
I guess the people prefer the silliness and celebraty ass kissing of Ellen.
Nah, they just prefer a show that’s actually good.
While not a fan of the Dish Nation type show, where it succeeds is that it not another lame talk show that is available on at least two or three other channels at the same time. I think day time can be reinvigorated with new ideas, formats, etc. Enough of the talk shows.
Yes, people are dying to see Dark Shadows. (not) People want to see talk shows. It’s just Ricki had a split personality. It wanted to be Oprah, but the stations and the viewers wanted old school Ricki. You can’t be both.
It will be interesting to see what happens to Probst. they too tried to launch into Oprah territory w/o establishing itself.
I wonder if Arsenio is having second thoughts about coming back-based on what happened to Ricki? I think Ricki & Arsenio’s time has come and gone. If Arsenio’s “new” show is just a rehash of his old show-it won’t last too long either. You need to adapt & bring something new to the table in today’s world. The market is also oversaturated with talk-shows.Do we really want(or need, for that matter) another one?
If someone was smart they would put Howard Stern on the air. an hour long interview program. I’d watch that! Howard’s the BEST, most thorough, interviewer out there. … Too bad Hollywood execs are Stupid wusses.
Maybe ABC could do a Dancing With the Cancelled Daytime Talk Show Stars?
She could never reclaim the popularity she had when she did her first show twenty years ago and I give her credit for at least trying but just way too many other shows that were out there and her ratings did her no favor either. Why Dish Nation got renewed is still a mystery but yet even more of these shows are forthcoming for the fall 2013 season, like Arsenio’s, which I believe will not last either. Probst airs in the wee hours of the morning on our affiliate, so that should tell you that show is finished as well. Look for a few more to bite the dust soon as well.
And bottom line folks…syndication offers the very worst in programming and look no further than Tribune’s and NBC universal’s deluge of garbage daytime programming to emphasize that point.
If anyone knew what to program in daytime….they would be unique
and adored!
It is such a diverse collection of confusion and melange where star power has no significance.
Roll the yuletide log! It’s certainly a lot more affordable
and it doesn’t TALK!
When Ricki Lake’s show was by Columbia Pictures Television Distribution (Columbia TriStar Television then Sony Pictures Television), the series lasted way longer than the 20th Television format. It was like Sally Jesse and Donahue among others.
What’s Josh the intern going to do now?
No surprise or loss at this news. What is disturbing is that Bethenny will be back and Kris Jenner, really??
Please get rid of Katie ! She makes me sick
I ABSOLUTELY LOVED ANDERSON LIVE. He is genuine.
I agree with your statement I use to watch Ricki Lake everyday when she came back the show just look cheap and it didn’t look up to date…
