Samuel Goldwyn Films has acquired the North American rights to Somm, by first-time documentary feature director Jason Wise. Somm, which screened recently at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, shines a light on the secretive Court of Master Sommeliers, following four men preparing to take the Master Sommelier exam and graduate to the exclusive ranks of the world’s foremost experts in wine. Wise also wrote the documentary and co-produced along with Christina Wise and Jackson Myers. It is executive produced by William Fowler and will be released in Summer 2013.

“……the secretive Court of Master Sommeliers….”
Huh? Who comes up with this tripe?? Yeah, so secretive that anybody can learn all they want about it on their website, including exam prep and description of all the activities. Sercretive???? I guess that makes the project sound more alluring than just saying it’s about the organization that trains wine stewards.
Heck, I enrolled in and passed the basic level exam and there was nothing secretive about it. The training was excellent and the Master Somms who were our instructors were very, very competent and very helpful. Far from being secretive they were very open and welcoming and wished all of us to continue on to the higher levels of training. Secretive…..no way. Highly professional and supremely expert …you bet.

FAN tastic!!
You try it then
@jack
As a Master Sommelier hopeful, I am so thrilled that an insight into the difficulty level and exclusivity of this career path will be open to the public to view. I have had the privilege to learn under 5 Master Sommeliers at the International Culinary Center (the only school accredited by the Court of Master Sommeliers) and I am truly humbled by the commitment and determination it requires simply to have a shot. #futuremastersommelier
What next? “Top Chef: The Movie”? “Stars In Danger: High Dive, The 3D 48 Frame Experience”? Cirque du Soleil’s “TeenMomAlia”? Broadway’s “Toddler’s & Tiaras & 3 Tenors”?
Yawn.
@ Jack. Comparing the level 1 and level 4 somm exams are like comparing a 3rd grade math test and a final exam at Harvard. Go ahead and try to sign up or study online for the Master somm test. The reason they say it’s secretive is because most court of somm masters don’t want the general public to see what goes on in the tasting rooms, etc. They prefer and air of exclusivity. This movie isn’t a slam on the court.. in fact there are a number of master somms in the guild who participated, such as Michael Jordan. I’ve seen this movie , and it’s amazing. You won’t get a look at the process anywhere else at this level.
You can take the first three levels by choice but you must be invited by The Court to test for Certified Master Sommelier.

I too have seen this film. To be clear it is more about the people, than the exam. It is a peek into the time and efforts and the hard work behind it all. There is no secret to hard work. It’s work.
Well said! There is no secret to hard work. So excited to see this film
