The UK’s ITV Studios is teaming with New Zealand-based Pukeko Pictures and Weta Workshop to co-produce Thunderbirds Are Go!, an update of the classic kids series that debuted in 1965. Twenty-six half hours have been ordered for air on ITV and CITV in the UK in 2015. The original Thunderbirds was created by Gerry Anderson, who passed away in December. Although it aired for just two seasons on ITV in the 60s, it became an international sensation. In syndication, the high-tech tales of adventurers rocketing around the world to fight evil-doers became a staple of Saturday morning and weekday afternoon programming in the U.S. The series also spawned feature films and inspired South Park creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker’s Team America: World Police.
The new series will be produced using a unique mix of CGI animation and live-action model sets while also paying tribute to the legacy of model locations from Anderson’s original. Thunderbirds Are Go! will see the return of the five brave Tracy brothers as they pilot their incredible vehicles into impossible rescues across the globe. Estelle Hughes is exec producing for ITV Studios, Giles Ridge for ITV Studios Global Entertainment and Richard Taylor and Andrew Smith for Pukeko Pictures. Rob Hoegee (Generator Rex, Slugterra) is head writer. ITV’s Denise O Donoghue said today, “Thunderbirds is a highly respected brand that continues to hold recognition around the world. This cult series is often credited as changing the history of animation and action-adventure, and we look forward to taking the show to another level while retaining the much-loved heritage that has endured over the past fifty years.” ITVSGE will handle worldwide rights for the new series.

If they do this right, it could be huge. As long as they respect
Gerry Anderson’s legacy then this will be great.
Therein lie the question. As we have already seen, Anderson properties (even when he was alive) were not treated with the respect he, and they, deserved (Jonathan Frakes pretty mediocre “Thunderbirds” movie).
Though I guess we won’t know till we see the finished product.
In fairness, Frakes’ live-action “Thunderbirds” movie had its heart in the right place. There was a lot wrong with it — redesigning the vehicles, and making it a teen-coming-of-age flick, primarily — but there was a lot right with it, too.
No, Mr. Sheen, there was nothing right with it. There was everything wrong with it. It was not only a dreadful film in its own right, it urinated in the mouth of the original while laughing, filming on its cellphone while doing so and posting the result on the internet. That’s what was wrong with it.
Call it heresy, but when I was a kid, my friends and I found the original series incredibly boring. It’s even more tedious watching it as an adult. Hope they inject some life into the new one.
Anybody remember Thunderbirds 2086? That was an out and out bastardization of the series. Lets hope it doesn’t go that route.
Funny how they waited for Anderson to pass away to announce this. I’d rather see a “Thunderbirds 2086″-style take (i.e. nothing to do with the original except the name) than a shitty modern-day update of the original. They’d probably have the Tracy brothers bicker and hate each other to keep it “edgy.” The cool ’60s puppets, art direction, and models would be replaced by flat CGI. The mod Lady Penelope would be no more. Why not redo one of the other Anderson shows that wasn’t as beloved as Thunderbirds?
It most likely was being held up by Anderson and they needed him to pass away for the paperwork to be signed. Maybe not, but the same thing happened with The Little Rascals. They had to wait until the last one passed away before they could sign over the rights.
“You can’t go home again”… and you can’t get the pre-CGI, pre- digital, pre-9/11 look and feel of the original 1960′s THUNDERBIRDS series, and you shouldn’t even try.
Any new show should pay homage, but really establish its own iconic look and feel. Gerry Anderson gathered a crew of model makers and effects people, that were free to experiment and utilize what budget they had, which served them well and lead to their later work on the Bond movies.
The movie “reboot” was a disaster because it didn’t have anything new to say!
“Thunderbirds is a highly respected brand that continues to hold recognition around the world”
The minute they said it was a “brand” this had middle-management cash-grab written all over it.
You’ve got it. Same old Saturday-morning-cartoon schtick. Make a show simply to sell the toys and action figures. Who cares if it’s good.
FAB….
GEAR!
SIG!
Hello! It’s not 1965 anymore! Do todays kids really want a reboot of a show (Thunderbirds) older than they are? The only reboot that should happen, is a reboot to the side of the head of anyone that thought this was a good idea!
