Here is an interesting stat. Reacher, the Christopher McQuarrie-directed adaptation of the Lee Child book series with Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher, has crossed $200 million worldwide. That makes 19 films that Cruise has starred in that have done that well globally. Have any other actors put up those kind of numbers? I can’t think of any. There have been reports that Reacher might be a one off. The movie cost $60 million and I am hearing that they are already figuring out the sequel at Paramount and Skydance. Studios are all about franchise building, and some take off financially on the second go-around. There are so many good Reacher books written by Child that there’s a wealth of ground to cover here.

Tom is a superstar
JACK REACHER was a helluva thrill-ride by a very skilled, thoughtful writer and director. McQuarrie knew exactly what the material was, and everyone had fun with it. If Cruise and McQuarrie come back together — I’m in for another installment! One which, hopefully, the studio will better position itself to market in a smarter light than it did the first time around.
Some stars have international appeal. Tom Cruise, Cameron Diaz, Nicole Kidman belong to this category. I’d rather be international star than domestic.
Good to see…Reacher was pretty good. And he’ll probably get number 20 with Oblivion.
Tom, I’m so happy for you! your movie was a big hit.and like always you make things right. your a great actor keep up your good work. susie kuby stassi,
Bam! He’s done it again!
He’s still got it’…
TomCat does it again lol
His upcoming movies will do much better.
Even with a wrong marketing from the studio, many angry protesters and the timing to his personal life; many critics has hailed his performance and the movie also got a decent reviews in general and it its global boxoffice passed 200 mil last saturday. It is fact that it will add some more. Besides his future movies have a great commercial appeal! so he will be where he is for many years to come!
i’d like to see tom do more interesting fare. that said, i was in the theaters and had a good time.
Reports of this films demise were greatly exaggerated.
I don’t think it is that of a big deal, i mean if it was any other actor it would be something to talk about. Do you remember last year’s “Moneyball” it grossed 110 mill worldwide and the media can’t stop talking about it even for someone whose starpower is huge and being on the screen for long oscar season as it open in september. Can you see the difference?
Tom gets it done, but have Matt Milam develop and produce the sequel and it’ll do double the numbers internationally.
Although I’m somewhat of a fan of Tom I could not see this movie. I’ve read all the Reacher books, love the character, but because his size is mentioned in every book, there is no way I want to see tiny Tom play my hero…..sequel? Must be for all those who haven’t read any of the books. There’s only one reason Lee Child agreed to the casting, and that was $$$$$. For the fans who were so disappointed in who played the character, we’re sorry Child sold out.
Agreed 100%. Everyone is making a big deal out of $200 million worldwide. Seriously? Skyfall did three times that. I think we CruiseCritics give Tom his due, but suggest he’s not right for this franchise. A Reacher movie should have “reached” more than $200 million. It’s a wasted opportunity. Cast it right and stand back–the audiences will come.
Jack Reacher made $200m on a $60m budget, and Skyfall did $800m on a $200m budget. An argument could be made that Skyfall being a Bond sequel with a gigantic marketing push including the Queen of England shilling for it, should have performed better. Perhaps Daniel Craig should be recast instead?
James bonds movies started 50 years ago, jack racher is the 1st movie, and the materials are different.
Actually, Skyfall did more than 5 times that. It is currently at $1.1 Billion worldwide.
Skyfall cost 200 million to make and did 6 times that much in the theaters….a billion 200 million. 200 million worldwide is chump change. it cost 60 so its just slightly profitable.
They are different movies with different expectations. It’s dumb to compare. They are both hits.
Seriously how can you compare Skyfall to Jack Reacher? The one is a 50 year franchise that has built up a huge fan base with renowned (and some not so renowned) 007′s
Tom is already at US$213m and Asia is only just starting so the movie could do somewhere around $300m which for a first up on $60m profit is pretty solid. MI4 too over $900m worldwide so give the Jack Reacher and Tom franchise a bit more time.
Then you’ll continue to miss out. I haven’t read the books, but my brother did, and even though he had the same concerns he still liked the movie.
I’ve read all the Reacher books more than once. I have to admit that despite my skepticism and Tom’s height, the movie works. Why? Because it did remain true to the novel. The key scene for me was when Reacher was set up to be hammered by several guys. The screenwriters stayed true to the scene in the book. It was Reacher all the way.
I now look forward to more. (Can’t believe I’m saying it, but it’s true.)
Bravo Tom!
Let me guess, you think someone like John Cena would make Jack Reacher a billion dollar hit?
I read the books and I was hoping for someone like Hugh Jackman, and frankly even though I respect his talent and love several of his films, I am not a big fan of Tom Cruise…BUT I was very pleasantly surprised here, Jack Reacher was a (much) better than expected action flick and I would definitely watch a sequel even if the star is nothing like the character in the novel.
I still contend that Chris Hemsworth has the physical attributes to pull off the Jack Reacher character. I don’t think Hugh Jackman would be a good fit.
Hemsworth isn’t old enough. Maybe in 10 years.
Chris won’t make it into $200 M worldwide.. believe me..
When did a Cruise movie gasping over $200 mil. internationally become something to celebrate?
Guess that is the new world for him.
Imagine what numbers it could have pulled with a good title.
Proof Tom is a superstar in every respect — and the rare one that can actually back up his fame with ROI.
The biggest star movie all time. Maybe Grant and Wayne there too. THE THREE. Since 1983… 30 years. He was a teen in Risky Business. Great worker, any day out. And a great person. Oblivion and AYNIK, two more pictures pass 200. Maybe the 300 easy. TOM CRUISE WORLD TOUR DID IT AGAIN, MAN! GROOVY!
CRUISEGOERS!
TC ruined this franchise for me. I am a Cruise fan, always have been, but did not believe him for one second in this role. I wish they have gone with Tom Hardy – a real ass kicker.
Ray Stevenson would have been the perfect choice…but having read all the books and seen the film, Ton did a great job.
The reason he pulled it off is because in the film, there’s no mention over and over again, like there is in the books, of Reacher’s size. In the film, his size, big or small, is simply NOT an issue. In the books, it is…yes. Lee Child tells us all the time how huge Jack Reacher is. But they don’t do it in the film and that’s why Tom Cruise worked out just fine.
Love cruise
Love the movie love to see another with cruise of course the biggest star on the planet go Tom
