EXCLUSIVE: With two Best Picture candidates in the hunt, Harvey Weinstein has begun putting together the Oscar season slate for next year. I’m told that The Weinstein Company is wrapping up a deal to acquire domestic rights to Grace Of Monaco, the Olivier Dahan-directed drama that stars Nicole Kidman as actress-turned-princess Grace Kelly, Tim Roth as Monaco’s Prince Rainier III. I’m hearing that TWC has made a big bet, paying a $5 million minimum guarantee and a P&A commitment around $10 million for a minimum 800 screen run. I was unable to get comment from TWC or CAA, which shopped the domestic rights and established the film as a hot buzz title by showing a sizzle reel footage at Berlin. TWC’s Weinstein and David Glasser made the deal Friday night here in Hollywood with CAA on behalf of Pierre-Ange Le Pogam, who produced the film with Uday Chopra and Arash Amel. Amel wrote the script. The film will be released in December, smack in the middle of next awards season, a release pattern that will be similar to the one TWC used for The Iron Lady. Inferno and Silver Reel were also in the deal. A $2 million deal for Canada is also in the offing.
The drama chronicles how Princess Grace made the transition from star of films like Dial M For Murder and Rear Window to her role as princess by playing a major role in helping her husband settle a dispute between her country and France’s Charles De Gaulle over tax laws in the 1960s.
It’s the second fact-based Oscar season film that TWC has acquired this week, the other being Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom, the Justin Chadwick-directed drama that stars Idris Elba as Nelson Mandela and Skyfall‘s Naomie Harris as Winnie Mandela. TWC also has the screen adaptation of Tracy Letts’ Pulitzer Prize winning play August: Osage County releasing in November, with Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, Benedict Cumberbatch and Ewan McGregor in the ensemble cast.

And then there’s Naomi Watts as Princess Di. That’ll be an interesting battle.
And there’s also Cameron Diaz in “The Counselor”. Trust me, she knocked it out of the park.
I can’t wait to see Nicole Kidman as Princess Grace. I hope that the movie will live up to all the press release. It will be interested to see how close that movie will capture the woman and the legend. Good luck in 2014.
Yes, all that hideous botox and plastic surgery should really give us a feel for grace kelly
Grace Kelly had a chin. How on earth a chinless wonder like Kidman was chosen to play a beautiful woman is anybody’s guess.
Cumberbatch as Julian Assange
Kidman will be amazing in this. Perfect casting. I know everyone loves to knock her but the lady CAN act.
I’m in two minds about this film.
I want it to be slightly bizarre and original and inspired and not at all TV-movie like, but at the same time what most people want is the straightforward Grace Kelly movie that they can kind of already see in their heads. If it isn’t, they will be disappointed, but if it is, it probably won’t be particularly good. My Week With Marilyn was a TV-movie with impeccable production values and a good performance, but wasn’t a good film. The Queen was able to strike some kind of balance between the two.
Will be interesting to see how the film turns out.
With Nicole Kidman playing princess grace its sure to be a good movie.Nicole’s talent is amazing and she brings show much compassion to all her roles a must see i would say.
Kidman has already been promoting Grace Kelly in print and public appearances. It’s an iconic role and I hope she and the film are successful. For the best actress Oscar, will Harvey equally promote Nicole and anyone worthy from August: Osage County (Meryl Streep)?
LONG WALK TO FREEDOM – PLEASE THAT HORRIBLE INVICTUS WAS ENOUGH
ugh boring Morgan
Julia and Meryl will be in the hunt as well next year.
She looks like a goddamned waxwork! What an earth were they thinking? Wasn’t Charlize available? I can’t watch Nicole Kidman any more because her frozen face is so damn distracting! What’s with the fish lips? Has everyone forgotten Australia and what a stinker that was?! Jeezus H Christ!
this movie was made in 1965 and won Best Picture “Darling”
Who s going to purchase tickets to this bore fest? Kidman with the waxworks is NOT Grace Kelly! Certainly there were better actresses out there. Style and grace, yes, Ms. Kidman and her kinkiness, does not deserve to portray royalty. THE PAPERBOY, STOKER, ARBUS? She is real classy!
Are these Scientologists that follow every article that is written about beautiful Nicole Kidman so they can try to pull her down ??? We have eyes and if she does use Botox and she is that beautiful we should all load up on it.
