Looks like Mamet has Pacino digging through his well-worn bag of incendiary tricks to showcase Spector paying lip service to pride and “righteousness” when at heart he was (is) an undoubtedly insecure mess of a person deserving of the blame for an ugly situation. His body body language looks spot on.
I’m hopeful.
This is laughable. This trailer, these actors, the hair and costuming, are of so low a level of quality as to again show us how far the great HBO has sunk. Where are the films that reveal our culture, that surprise us in their execution, that evoke the kind of riveting authenticity that is deserving of kudos. If it weren’t for a couple of series, Veep and Game of Thrones and the HBOGO service, I’m ready to stop giving them my money every month.
AC you couldn’t say it better. HBO used to make movies that were about something. There is nothing revelatory to say about this sick man who tortured and murdered women for being pretty. Didn’t we just see that story with Amato’s Hitchcock debacle?
Amato just wants to hire his old bosses and pick from the movie stars that impressed him as a kid. I swear to God he’s seen one movie in his life and it had Al Pacino in it.
Amato has no sense of humanity and no sense of humor. The scripts he chooses are male driven and biased against women. It’s all about who he has a creative crush on and wants to work with. He has no desire to really do a great job. It’s a sad waste of a terrific job. Hitchcock was unworthy. Too Big To Fail was dismal. He doesn’t hire female directors, writers, producers except Paula. He doesn’t make films with any diversity. The stories have no depth. Game Change was clever and forgettable. Temple Grandin was the last film with any depth or meaning and Amato didn’t want to make it because it was from the old regime. Sad to see HBO Films fall so far.
God, they are ruining Sea of Love for me; did they have to cannibalize Unchained Melody for this?
one word…EMMY!! oh hell lets just go for the triple crown, Mr. Pacino will get the GLOBE & SAG also.
Pacino looks like he will NOT disappoint!
Who is this supposed to appeal to? Looks dreadful and unpleasant. At least Jeremy Irons in Reversal of Fortune (which this seems to be a pretty straight knockoff of) had a weirdness and charisma to him.
Leave the true crime to Lifetime, HBO. Rob Lowe in a cheesy mustache and chewing the scenery may not win any Emmys, but it’s a damn sight more entertaining than this overpriced, tedious dreck.
Helen Mirren and Al deserve a better movie. Mamet too. No coffee for anyone.
Says someone that works for Starz.
…said the chippy film school grad.
You do realize Mamet wrote and directed this on his volition.
What happened to HBO Films? They used to make good movies that were about something. Now they seem to have an obsession with creeps who hate women. The fish stinks from the head.
Len Amato will have RObert Duvall, Christopher Walken, Robert DeNiro in movies next. By they can’t be period pieces because they’re too fruity. It offends his sense of what masculine can be. That terrible Liberace movie with two straight men (see no ones kissing like they mean it) is the best he can offer.
“My name is Ricky Roma.. I mean Phil Spector.”
Nothing was left for SNL…
Hoo-hah! Do they give the Razzies for TV? This looks like total crap.
Between this and GAME CHANGE, HBO is becoming the network for ‘acting-karaoke.’
GAME CHANGE won THREE Golden Globes. Shut up.
HBO seems so cozy with the foreign press. It wasn’t hard.
This whole project seems as wrongheaded as the last few from this HBO team.
Who cares if it won Golden Globes. When her acceptance speech is derisive of the person she was clearly trying to parody, then the whole project was clearly a joke and a caricature. How can you do an honest portrayal of someone when you’re actively vilifying the person you’re supposed to be portraying?
Mamet’s ultra-reactionary politics ruined his latest Broadway show, and it looks like they’ve crept into this film as well. What a shame.
“Spector killed Lana Clarkson…but let’s make everyone think he didn’t because it makes better televison.” Said no one ever except David Mamet.
Pacino isn’t at all lost in that character. Every time he opens his mouth I see Pacino, not the character.
Don’t get me wrong; I’m a huge Pacino fan. Just not on this one.
And I was just waiting for him to yell “You’re out of order! You’re out of order! The whole trial is out of order! They’re out of order!”
Check out that fright wig!
Reminds me of Sean Penn in “This Must Be the Place”.
Damn Al look like Phil Spector even mannism
I sensing a emmy nod next year
oh MY i love how some of them “tolerant progressive liberals” started developing a case of mamet-hate as soon as his politics changed to the right
well for this viewer – pacino playing a creep like spector written by the man who wrote American Buffalo and Speed The Plow intrigues me…because you know, we should only make movies about noble, uplifting people…right?
so shakespeare should NOT have written about henry VIII
I’m guessing if this was written by some left leaning artiste – those of you complaining about mamet will turn around and say…”this is going to be an insightful study on the depraved mind of a maverick”
ugh so predictable some of yous sometimes (well – all the time)
I don’t think anyone is complaining about the film because Mamet is a right winger or a left winger (I have no idea of Mamet’s politics). This movie just looks like a massive floating turd with lots of wrinkles and crows feet.
I wouldn’t even mention it in the same breath as Henry VIII, Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer is maybe a better comparison. Based on this trailer, this madefor seems to lack any quotable line, discernible wit, or compelling irony. Somebody above said it best…how low has HBO sunk (stunk?) that the Lifetime Channel is making better movies about famous murders?
Thank you Purple. The response here has nothing to do with Mamet and whatever his politics are. This movie is disgusting and comes from an ugly place. People who love movies know this. Such wasted potential at HBO Films under the likes of Amato. He’s taken a fantastic job and made mostly bile. He claims his excuse is that HBO movies must make “noise.” This movie is hateful. HBO Films would rather make crap than real movies.
If you think for one minute that Mamet isn’t being crucified for his politics and not his craft you’re SO WRONG. It takes guts to be on the ‘right’ in Hollywood’ Too bad the left doesn’t have the same ‘guts’ to give credit where credit is due, be it to one who’s left OR right. Drink a bottle of ‘water’ David. The publicity will do for you what it did for Rubio….lol
Al`s a legend & can do no wrong..even this is right cuz he`s in it.
Clearly you didn’t see Al singing and dancing in Adam Sandler’s “Jack & Jill” (where Sandler played the male and female roles).
Watch Al Pacino RAPPING in a Dunkin Donuts in that movie–just youtube “Dunkaccino,” and tell me that Al can do no wrong.
I am looking forward to seeing him play JoPa in that feature though. Between Pacino and Hoffman, it DOES seem like Amato is obsessed with septagenarian stars from the 70s and 80s. We have Michael Douglas as Liberace on deck… Can DeNiro be far behind on HBO’s radar?
Amato is obsessed with movie stars who were big when he was 20. Michael Douglas, Al Pacino, Bill Hurt, Ed Harris but God forbid you bring him an actress of that age and he runs for the hills. He wants to meet and work with all his boyhood crushes. Someone said its become Lifetime Movies for Men. Amato doesn’t care about great stories, great actors, great directors it’s all about his tiny taste band of no width.
HBO used to make tremendous movies. It was about the story not the casting. HBO claims it’s more difficult to market the films now that’s why they keep making these soulless male driven films with tiny stories. That’s such a bullshit argument. HBO can market a shoe or a piece of used dental floss. Game of Thrones is their biggest show. Girls is another. No big male stars there. HBO Films keeps arguing they have to have movie stars you wouldn’t see anywhere else in their films and directors who are ‘sexy.” There is not a single film out this new philosophy that is memorable and good. Hemingway and Gelhorn was a dog from the script on up. The direction was dismal. I wish they would go back to the model of making powerful films instead of this model of no effort, no taste but Amato gets to met his boyhood crushes. They recently bought a mini from England. They would have never made it here originally. Could it just be Amato has no taste or vision at all?
De Niro and James Caan will have to star in something as a couple of losers unworthy of a movie. Only actors who have been a part of the American Film Catalogue from 1970-79 can sign up. Preferably they must have been in a Godfather film because those are the only movies Amato has ever seen.
Have Coppola direct because he’s a guy and hasn’t directed for HBO (cause women never direct HBO films or write them) and you have a big marketing wet dream that no one will ever want to watch again.
