Four weeks into its 12th season, American Idol (4.6/13) started Hollywood Week Part 1 with contestants gathered from all over the country. Last night it was male contestants only for the first time. Down 15% from last week’s fast nationals, the Fox series was still the night’s most watched show with 14.18 million viewers. Fox won Wednesday overall in total viewers and adults 18-49
In the first part of a Super Bowl-promoted crossover with spinoff CSI: NY, the original CSI (2.4/7) was down from its last original two weeks ago. The long-running series slipped 8% from the season-high match for its January 23 airing. Still winning its 10 PM time slot, CSI pulled in 10.93 million viewers, down from the 11.49 million who watched two weeks ago. The two-parter ends on Friday’s CSI: NY. CBS started the night with an encore of Person Of Interest (1.2/4) followed by a new Criminal Minds (2.7/7), which was the night’s second-most-watched show with 11.83 million viewers. It was down 13% from its last original January 23 to tie a series low.
On ABC, The Middle (2.3/7) dipped 8% from its last new episode January 23 while The Neighbors (1.8/5) was up 13% from last week’s series-low tie. Hitting a new season low, Modern Family (3.8/10) was down 10% from its last original and season-low on January 23. It was the other way round for Suburgatory (2.1/5), which spiked 17% from the series-low tie it hit last week. The network ended the night with a new Nashville (1.7/5), which slipped 11% from its last original two weeks ago.
NBC’s Whitney (1.2/4) was down 8% from last week, with fellow comedy Guys With Kids (1.2/3) rising 9% from its January 30 show. Facing off against Idol for the second time this season, Law & Order: SVU (1.5/4) fell 12% from last week. Back for a second week after a three-week break, freshman Chicago Fire (1.8/5) was down 14% from its January 30 airing.
The CW aired Arrow (1.0/3) and Supernatural (0.9/2) last night. The former rose 11% from last week, while the latter was even with its January 30 show.
Deadline's Dominic Patten - tip him here.

CSI was great! Cool cross-over. Fun to see Lt. Dan and Sam Malone together.
Maybe if they would have new shows EVERY week, they would have an audience. Instead of trying to keep getting them back after having reruns.Have 8 or 15 or whatever it is new shows in a row and you’ll have an audience. Personally I stop watching shows that continue that practice. To begin with none of these shows are that great that you can’t live without them
Where’s Petar to tell us how awesome POI is, and remind us about guest directors and possible spin-offs?
YES! LOL
LOLOLOL!
And the winner of Deadline for today goes to CHRIS!
YEAH for Emily and the gang at Suburgatory! The writing, acting and ensemble get better every week! LOVE LOVE LOVE That show! The Modern Family lead-in, followed by Nashville, make my Wednesday!! Don’t go changing, or messing with this schedule, ABC.
So happy to see a very strong CRIMINAL MINDS (with a supberb Ken Olin) without gore and horror. I didn’t have to look away once! Cirector Thomas Gison brought it, congrats! Next on the wishlist: continuity re: the private stories. Spence can’t be back to normal after what happened. What’s Garcia up to these days?
Excellent SVU as well. Andre Braugher, Ed Asner, Mike Tyson and Peter Scanavino – what a dream of a guest cast.
I love NASHVILLE, it just gets better and better. The first few episodes were a bit bumpy with scared storytelling (let’s redeem Juliette asap! Let’s give a taste of a gazillion things to come!), but now we’re down to business and it flows really well. They have a great cast to work with, too.
CSI/CSY:NY crossover, really? And then make it a two-parter, so that the viewers, many of whom are of the instant gratification and on-demand generation, have to wait for the resolution? Personally, I much prefer CSI and don’t want to see Gary Sinise there (or anywhere, really. I was hoping Mac would finally retire due to health reasons and ride into the sunset with his much younger girlfriend. No such luck.). And I don’t watch part one and then wait, either….
Love THE NEIGHBORS, that’s always fun … or it was until they started to focus on the teenage kids more. Does Mamet’s daughter know that she’s supposed to portray a human being? She seems to think she’s one of the aliens…
That is the annoying thing there’s constantly week/2 week+ breaks and it disjoints viewers. Give them a show consistently every week (Minus the Christmas break) and ratings will benefit. Turning on the TV expecting a show to be on only to be greeted with a re-run or something else is frustrating.
If I didn’t go to the extra trouble of always checking online to see when there are reruns (so I can skip them), I would be terribly frustrated as well. I know most people are not going to do that. They are just going to turn the tv on at the time their favorite show is supposed to be on and expect a new episode. And when reruns (especially 2-3) in a row are on instead, they will stop watching, assuming they are going to get another rerun. Why don’t the networks get a clue and run all the new episodes in a row, and then the reruns after that, even if it means you end up finishing the season in March or April? They would certainly get better ratings and a better chance of getting renewed.
Criminal Minds is my favorite show since “24″ went off the air. I not only have the complete set of DVD’s but watch the reruns on A & E and ION. But I have to say, this season with Emily leaving has left a void in the group. I love Jean Tripplehorn and this is no way a slur toward her, but she was a bad choice to replace Paget Brewster. I can think of so many others that would have kept the ratings up. She is too passive for the BAU group. Look at the progression. Reed who couldn’t shoot is now shooting the bad guys. He is taking on a more aggressive role. Then J. J. who was a pretty, compassionate face and still is, has now started kicking butt. Even Garcia has come out of her little room to take on a more leadership position. So what is Jean Tripplehorn’s role? She is just there. I can see her taking Strauss’s place better. If they want to bring the ratings up and bring the viewers back, they need to rethink their choice and bring in someone else who is a dominant figure in the BAU. Just a few suggestions but by no means a complete list: Emily Proctor, Eva La Rue, Kelly Hu, Melina Kanakarides, or bring in another big screen name Annabeth Gish, Teri Polo, and yes I know those last two played characters in earlier episodes. But bring in someone that will kick butt like Emily did. Or change Jean’s character to be more aggressive. I am tired of losing my favorite shows. Don’t let this one be a casualty because of poor judgment. I love Criminal Minds.
Calabzach, don’t fret so much about Criminal Minds. All the characters are great. That was just a bad episode. CSI- the same. All of Wednesday favorites had weak episodes last night. The Middle was basically a dramedy last night. Great story with a heartwarming ending, I didn’t have one, NOT ONE, laugh out loud moment. Modern Family was actually the exception- laughed so hard and so loud I had tears coming out the side of my eyes by the time Hayley’s idiot boyfriend, Dillion, had turned into the baby whisperer. MF’s drop is probably due to coming off repeats, and as I have stated numerous times, not having better comedies on either side of it. Happy Endings and The B in Apt 23 9pm block completely destroyed Tuesdays for ABC, killing DWTS and Private Practice’s potential for growth. Wednesday is the same scenario, different day. Meanwhile, the better comedies to sandwich between The Middle and Modern Family are banished to Friday, where they still are doing as well as (LMS- 1.4 and 7 million viewers last week)if not better than The Neighbors and Suburgatory. Granted, Neighbors and Suburgatory had a much better week. Neither is consistent and that is a major problem with the writing.
I watched Modern Family this week and thought: Jon Stewart manages to come up with original humor every night but Modern Family has a week to write the same amount of minutes and can barely squeeze out 3 good laughs.
Yup. I don’t even think I smiled once the entire episode.
And Lilly is getting more annoying every episode.
Re: Modern Family, I am so tired of the unfunny kids taking up half the story lines. They are not seasoned pros. Give me more Ed O’Neil and less, much less, bratty kids.
Agree on Modern Family. Kinda getting old. But still a good family show.
Concerning NBC’S sitcoms: None of them are getting any great ratings but for what its worth, Guys With Kids is the most fun to watch. I’ll watch Community and Parks and Rec but can’t watch those with the kids. That’s what I like about Guys with Kids. We can all watch together.
Guys With Kids had a 9% INCREASE and still only managed a 1.2? Quit sleeping behind the wheel NBC and CANCEL it!!! Cancel that Whitney, Go On, …hell cancel 75% of your line-up! At least with you shows you have a chance at success rather than a start in last place. Pitiful.
I’d like to see Nashville tick up a little more in the ratings as it’s a really good program, but the downfall is hurting its chances for a second season. New episodes next week on the 27th
@MaryAnn-you are absolutely right! I also find out when new episodes are on by searching the internet. The erratic scheduling of new episodes of tv shows is a total turn-off. Thanks for your wisdom.
That’s not what the reviews say. Go to TV Equals.
