Looks like wall-to-wall crippled cruise ship coverage wasn’t enough to get CNN off rough ratings seas. One full month since Jeff Zucker officially took over the cable news network, CNN saw a 5% dip in total day viewers and a 1% slip in primetime viewership in February as compared to January. Fox News Channel won February among cable news networks in terms of total day and primetime viewership with MSNBC coming in second and CNN in third. Last year, CNN was in second place after Fox. Also, despite the sharp bump the network got from its widely mocked expansive February 14 coverage of the Carnival Triumph’s tug to port, CNN saw a 4% slip this month in the Adults 25-54 demographic in both total day and primetime compared to January. Former NBC Universal exec Zucker formally stepped into his job as president CNN Worldwide on January 20 as the network was deep in political reporting and soon topped its rivals in Inauguration coverage. If those month-to-month figures are down, the year-to-year are down more. CNN fell 10% in total day viewership and 18% in primetime viewership from last February to an average audience of 424,000 during the day and 659,000 between 8 PM and 11 PM. The network was also down in the 25-54 demo from last year, falling 20% in total day and 32% in primetime.

With The O’Reilly Factor and Hannity and more shows dominating the top spots, FNC pulled in 1.094 million total day viewers – more than MSNBC’s 432,000 and CNNs just behind 424,000 put together. That total day difference between MSNBC and CNN has been narrowing since a 180,000 spread in MSNBC’s favor last October. In primetime FNC had 1.79 million viewers, with 296,000 in the demo, compared to MSNBC’s 795,000 (234,000 among the 25-54) and CNN, which had 193,000 in the demo.
However, with the Presidential race and the ratings bumps it brings now over, CNN wasn’t the only cable news network to see a downward turn from last February. Fox News Channel fell 29% in the demo in total day compared to last year and 29% in primetime. However, FNC saw much smaller drops in viewership in February 2013 compared to February 2012. There was no difference in total day audience and 6% in primetime. Bill O’Reilly and Sean Hannity’s shows saw 26% and 35% demo drops from February last year. On the other hand, FNC was up 7% and 11% in total day and primetime viewership compared to January 2013 with a 9% and 11% rise in the demo respectively. Among all the individual shows on cable news, Anderson Cooper 360 was really the only one to see significant growth compared to last year. AC360 rose 42% in total viewers over last February and 27% in the demo. With the post-election bounce and the swearing-in over, MSNBC was down 12% in total day viewers from January and up 1% in primetime viewers. The network was also down 12% in the demo in total day but had no decline in primetime compared to the month before. This month, MSNBC saw a 5% drop in total day viewership with a 2% slip in the demo from February 2012. MSNBC was down 4% primetime in February compared to last year and 1% in the demo.

The power of Zucker to sink any ship is starts early.
I have noticed the erosion of a quality news source.
How about getting back to reporting news instead of having panels tell us their view of what is going on.
Piers Morgan comes on, click, I go to another channel, and will continue doing so until he’s gone.
Amen! Report the news and facts. If the ‘reporter’ puts any spin on it fire them. If the ‘news agency’ puts any spin on it, fire them….this is actually happening to CNN, they are being fired by their viewers.
I agree with you, but I am afraid these days 51% of the audience is not capable of knowing when they are being manipulated. Additionally, it is highly improbable that any REAL journalists work for major news companies. Even Fox, though 1000% better than MSN, CBS, CNN, etc., is starting to have journalist ethics issues. Concerning the other networks and NY Times, Washington Post, et al, it is too late as they have been overrun by biased, radical writers.
These cable news groups wouldn’t be losing viewers if they would just report the news instead of their opinions.
Every main stream “news” outlet has turned into nothing more than biased commentary, its entertainment. The networks pander to their shareholders; even if that means twisting and tweaking the information to do it. Turn off the boob tube before you turn into a boob.
The problem with CNN is that they do not report news, they try and sway everyone into their way of thinking. At one time, I watched Fox News, CNN and others because it was news and not opinions. CNN tries to force their radical liberal views down our throats and I have had enough of it. Piers needs to go back to the land of Brits. CNN will never be out Fox News because they ram opinions at you and try and get popular people to side with them and they actually think it will make us sway. I am sorry, Zucker is an idiot and he needs fired and CNN needs to bring someone over from Fox to help them smooth themselves out.
If CNN would just get rid of the these non-reporter types and hire good honest newsmen/women that will actually tell the truth about President Obama instead of falling all over him and blasting Republicans. They are misleading all Americans and I am so sick of this one-sided view we get from these wan-a-b’s.
They have no experience in covering politicians and yet we have to listen to them spew their own views. Hire some good reporters that have been around and can give a truthful account of what is taking place in Washington. Bottom line is stop covering for the politicians lies and give us the TRUTH and just report the FACTS!
Piers Morgan, Wolf have got to go – I turn off to another channel when they appear.
Whoever hired Burnett should be fired.
as a life long registered democrat i can no longer watch cnn. i choose to watch fox or abc. the last good rating cnn had were the republician debates. which to me said if cnn was a little more center they would draw some conservatives and independents to watch their shows. piers morgan is terrible.
Amen. Piers peaked with Susan Boyle. Downhill ever since.
Not fair to Jeff Zucker, although I’ve no particular need to defend him. The man’s just arrived to a network that’s been working hard to figure this out for some time. Mr. Zucker’s background is in journalism and — lucky for us and the US Constitution – he’s hiring folks with (somewhat of) a pedigree to uphold the principles of the Fourth Estate.
Good journalists don’t distort – they present the facts as revealed to them at that moment, trusting the citizenry of the Republic to decide for itself how to interpret information. Yet we all know Fox News manipulates truth to obtain ratings; I find this compelling, as I’ve three wonderful colleagues (a Turk and Russian) from grad school who have enjoyed overall working for that news org (my 3rd colleague, of Nicaragua, HATED IT).
I wish ALL news outlets the best of luck maintaining the Democratic principles of this extraordinary country. To quote Julie Christie: I love MY America…”
Quote from Marlene Braga: “…we all know Fox News manipulates truth to obtain ratings…”.
Prove it, and please don’t use the tired old saw that “everyone knows they do”. How about some hard facts to back up your claim?
You’re post is rather telling, cnn a source known for its bias, one sided reporting, known for manipulating the news for not only ratings but ideology and you dismiss it but, typical, point your fingers at fox. Did you happen to miss abc/nyt/cbs/nbc???? Just because fox manipulates to the right that excuses that the rest all show a left bias and a lack of professional ethics?
You are part of the problem, the news should be the news but as is typical, you ignore the bias that suits you while condemning the ones that don’t.
Examples?…of Fox News manipulating the truth for ratings? I, for one, tuned out MSNBC, CNN, CBS, NBC (although I watch CNBC), ABC BECAUSE they didn’t report “news” in a timely fashion (i.e. Travon Martin, Benghazi, Menendez, etc.). Then, when they did “mention” it, it was a “blip” on the radar screen.
No. We don’t “all know tha fox minipulates the facts”. I have been watching ALL outlets, including some that you may not have even heard of, li RTV, and CCTV. I watch specific shows from specific networks and cable programming, even though I find most are slanted at best and totally untruthful at worst. Of all the cable programs, FOX is the least biased.
Any truth to the rumor that re-runs of Andy Griffith beat CNN and MSNBC?
I hope they sink to the bottom of the ocean!
Most networks today seem to not report the news but simply MAKE the news. Many Americans like myself have found a new way to reduce our blood pressure–and that is just find the OFF Button to your radio or TV. What you hear is just war mongering and divisive politics and hateful religion. Who needs that?
Piers Morgan is why!! Cut him and some of us will return until then CNN can go to Hell!!
Amen!!!
Everyone knows that primetime is valuble real estate on ANY network, if Zucker and company keeps the current line up in place then they’re just spinning their wheels.
it is not the line up they present , but the liberal garbage they spew . Pretty damn telling when 2 programs on the comedy channel rate higher every week than anything on both CNN and MSNBC .
Hey Zucker haters… let’s be fair. These ratings are still reflecting pre Zucker influence at CNN.
Jeff needs time to be judged all on his own.
Let the games begin…
I agree w/ fairness. Zucker made 2 GREAT moves right outta the gate. He hired Jake Tapper and axed race hustler SoulOfTheBad O’Brien. Give it a little time.
Norma makes some good points.
Agree..I thought that was a good move Zucker made by bringing Tapper on. I will be watching him. Zucker did well in getting rid of Soledad.
He should have never been hired to begin with. Period. The brand has long been damaged and he certainly is not the one to fix it.
No they are not. The cruise ship coverage will go down as the greatest tv fail ever. I mean it. Nobody, nobody gave a shit about that boat. The folks on it were bored and tired. There was no reason to sensationalize it like the Titanic sinking. It was all Zucker. That son of a bitch has ruined enough tv. Get him the fuck away already.
Thanks folks.
Zucker has already left his mark from day one—with the producer hear on air of “cut her off, cut her off” when CNN came across a Cruise Ship Passenger who had disembarked and began “Thanking God”…same old same old with Zucker from this one sided view of the Truth—their side.
psssst—they overpaid for Cuomo…that goof is nothing but the kind of primped, coifed male “reporter” who is at his best when “dropped in” and reads cue cards on location. He failed miserably trying to ad-lib real time during the Cruise ship arrival…a complete buffoon..Zucker paid way way way too much of the stockholders money for that fraud Cuomo.
i’m no fan of the former nbc chief, but you’ve given him one whole month before you’ve passed judgement? weak reporting.
2012 was an election year….of course the news ratings will be down.
Its been going down well past 2012.
Zucker supersized the cruise ship story and sank the ratings instead. Let’s all keep in mind this was Jeff Bewkes’ boneheaded decision to put this wealth-destroying lunatic in charge. And he’s also got massive employee issues at WB too.
But he did get rid of Soledad O’Brien. Now who do we have to laugh at? Piers Morgan? That’ll work!
Jeff Bewkes is way out of touch and out of his league. To bring on Zucker is a clear reflection of that.
Maybe he will bring CNN creative editing like they have at NBC . Why just slant the news when you can change it to a whole new meaning more to your liking?
…do they really need encouragement?
RIP.. CNN.. you shall nOT be Missed
CNN was sinking before Zucker and now it’s sinking even faster….
CNN needs an evening anchor with gravitas and journalistic credibility, and who is not afraid to ruffle feathers by asking the tough questions. Any suggestions?
Bill Bennett
Drop that robot, Wolf Blitzer. It would help to have somebody with character. Brian Williams available?
“Brian Williams available?”
Way too busy in the heavily used “editing” room at NBC…
Brian Williams is a tool.
There are several journalists over at FOX that meet your criterion. Like: Mike Wallace, Brit Hume, Bret Baier or John Roberts. And several more. That’s why FOX is #1 year after year.
You would think even a fool like Zucker would decide to put money & ratings over ideology and re-spin CNN into FNC-lite, with an emphasis on presenting both sides of the days issues.
And perhaps he will.
The American people are sick of being lied to and patronized.
Once you lose credibility, it’s hard to get it back.
Zucker has his work cut out for him.
john roberts was at cnn. i guess he wasnt titlted left enough ,hes at fox now.
Brian Williams, “character”? Good one.
Wolf Blitzer symbolizes all that’s wrong with CNN’s programming. Dull, unimaginative (not bright) and biased anchors. The solution?
Get a British host to talk down to us every evening since we aren’t up to European socialist norms.
The cruise ship story should not be mocked. It was CNN going back to what CNN did best: Breaking News.
Viewers are tired of the political stuff. The nation is badly divided and no one wants to watch D vs R all day.
Now Zucker needs to replace his EP’s. The guy from PIX who EP’s Erin…pffft. Wald, the apple who fell very far from the tree is up to his old ways. What do you say A? Not like everyone isn’t buzzing about it.
The further left CNN and step-sister MSNBC move, the lower their ratings go….hmmm what’s that tell ya?
Think outside the box , think of the electrifying ” The March of Time ” .
Get rid of all news hosts . Let’s the news speak for itself .
They should have sold CNN to Al Jazeera when they had a chance.
CNN wasn’t owned by a Dem power-broker who was auctioning himself off.
The only way CNN ever become relevant again is if they stop with their far-left news coverage. There’s a market for unbiased news that could be filled. I doubt Zucker would even try to fill it. Zucker is more liberal ideologue than businessman.
Ratings down? How can that be? You would think that a wall-to-wall constant rotation of gun control, cruise ship disaster and Oscar Pistorius would have the viewers glued to their seats and the advertising dollars flowing in. CNN is supposed to be the news network with the other two pimping for their respective sides. This is news?
If Zuger does what he does what he did MSNBC to CNN it will be the 27th worse network he ever ran!
Alex jones….lol
There aren’t any left.
The “don’t be so harsh … give him a chance” comments make me giggle.
He proved himself at NBC, costing a lot of jobs and even more shareholder value.
The man’s greatest talent is convincing higher ups to give him more time … to sink the ship completely.
I don’t want CNN to fail, we must have them as an alternate news source. They used to be very good back in the beginning. The hard left they took really turned me off with the half wit snarky commentators (Lemmon, Brazile O’Brien et al) who themselves always have their own self serving agenda front and center. They say stupid inflammatory things such as when Anderson Cooper coined the gay phrase Teabagger to describe the tea party participants. That is not news, that is vindictive shaping of news and it was vile. I’m not a tea party person but that was just so low, juvenile and revealing of what the network will allow, promote. They should dump everyone and start over with some more appealing people, not angry leftists, gays, blacks and white uber liberals who think they are superior just because they are liberals. Please stop with the Black in America, Hispanic in America et al. We are sick of the race baiting and have sympathy overload for people who may or may not need it or deserve it and if you look under every rock you are sure to find a somber, upsetting story, yeah even white people suffer and have been treated poorly.
I couldn’t agree more. Well put!
It was and still is Crap Not News.
Zucker is trying to polish a turd
CNN should take a look at local Detroit anchor Huel Perkins. Black, not conservative, but generally tells it like it is and not afraid to poke his finger into the eye of a corrupt black politician. Pretty high-speed guy.
