UPDATE, 9:28 AM: In updated Nielsen numbers, last night’s Grammy Awards rose a little higher from earlier fast national results. The 55th Grammys pulled in 28.37 million viewers on Sunday. That’s up from the 28.12 million reported earlier and still the show’s second best audience since 1993. Among the key 18-49 demographic, the Grammys also went up from earlier, achieving a 10.1 as opposed to the 10.0 reported before.
PREVIOUSLY, 8:26 AM: Not unexpectedly, the Grammy Awards last night were down from last year’s near record-high. Kicking off with a performance by Taylor Swift, the 55th Grammys (10.0/24) on CBS pulled in 28.12 million viewers Sunday. Although down from the 39.91 million who watched last year and 27% in adults 18-49, Sunday’s 8-11:30 PM broadcast is the second-best audience for the music awards show since 1993. Last year’s Grammys came 24 hours after Whitney Houston died suddenly while in Los Angeles to attend the awards show. Interest in her death and how the Grammys would react in tribute fueled viewership to its second-highest ever. Last year’s results were a 50% leap over the 2011 show’s viewership, which itself had been the best the Grammys had done in a decade. The largest Grammy audience ever was in 1984 with 43.8 million.
In the key 18-49 demo, Sunday’s Grammys results pretty much matched the 2011 show’s ratings. The 2012 Grammys drew a steller 14.1/33 in 18-49.

ABC started its Sunday primetime with America’s Funniest Home Videos (1.8/5), which had a rise of 38% from its last new show on January 20. A Rise was not what Once Upon A Time (2.2/5) and Revenge (1.4/3) had last night. The former was down 8% from its last original on January 20 and the latter fell 18% from its last new show three weeks ago. The results were series lows for both. ABC ended the night with the ABC News: Revenge For Real (0.8/2) special.

I’m never, ever, ever going to like that song.
Not bad at all. Grammy Awards is clearly still very popular. Let’s see if the Oscars can improve from last year too.
Am I the only one who noticed that there was NO image of Whitney during the segment dedicated to those who have pasted on. Maybe I missed it, please advise.
Thank You,
Whitney was recognized at last year’s awards. She died the day prior to the ceremony and was featured in the montage.
Yep agreed, didnt show Whitney. Regardless if they mentioned last year she still past last year and should of been mentioned. Sad. Shame on you Grammys
I tuned in for the last few minutes, after BBC America got done showing the BAFTAs. Two terrible performances later (the bilingual cover of “Your Song” and that mess with the guy playing keyboard with running legs projected in front of him–not gonna look up names on these, nope), I remembered why I don’t watch the Grammys. LL Cool J’s closing performance was better, but CBS just straight up played commercials over the top of it! Nice.
You’re never ever ever gonna be relevant.
Like never.,ever’???
Stupid decision by Abc airing new episodes against th grammys. They made us wait this long for new episodes,so,another week wouldn’t have killed anyone. Probably most of the commenters on this site could do a better job of episode scheduling than the programming wizards over at Abc. Completely clueless network.
Enjoyed last years show, but not this years weak performances especially the awful Frank Ocean if it wasnt for the visual effect I believe he would of been booed off stage. In fact I was so dissapointed I changed channels and watched the excellent walking dead only tuning back in when commercials came on.
Is that who that was? That was my first exposure to his music. Definitely a “what is all the fuss about” moment. Really bad.
I don’t know what happened, but the Grammys were on a roll in previous years with some truly unforgettable moments. But last night’s show kept me hoping the best was yet to come…it only got worse. There were a few highlights like Rhianna’s heartfelt performance of “Stay” and Album of the Year winners, Mumford and Sons performance of “I Will Wait.” But the show was largely a train wreck.
Maybe its the fact that the pop music industry suffers from derivative acts and poor songwriting—it’s all style and no substance. But even Carrie Underwood succumbed to that pitfall. Her downbeat rendition of “Blown Away” was a dud as the segue into her new single, “Two Black Cadillacs.” She stood stiff and lifeless as images were projected on her dress…yawn.
After Mumford and Sons won “Album of the Year,” you could read Bonnie Raitt’s lips as she sighed a sign of relief and said “I’m glad!”
The Grammy Awards stunk. Walking Dead stunk. ABC stunk-it-up horrendously as a network with the exception of America’s Funniest Home Videos which is still a huge success for them. It’s the only show they have they can stand up to football and special programming. If this were Stephen McPherson instead of Paul Lee they would have fired him by now for continuing to bring in the same line of bullshit programming year after year. Count the number of years he’s been at the helm of ABC without developing one solid night of success. Sunday has crated and won’t ever return to the success it once was unless they get some huge hit in there fast. The crap sandwiched between The Middle and Modern Family has destroyed that night for them. And every other night has deteriorated because of his lack of developing hits. You cannot develop a successful lineup when every drama is “THE CALIFORNIANS” and every comedy is “DONT TRUST THE BITCH…” LOL. On a better not, I do hope The Walking Dead is back to being a great show once again next week.
