TNT’s Monday Mornings had a sickly debut last night. The 10 PM premiere of the new medical drama pulled in just 1.34 million viewers in Live + Same Day. That’s a harsh drop from the 2.232 million Monday Mornings’ 9 PM lead-in Dallas got Monday with the second show of its second season. Monday Mornings averaged 386,000 among Adults 18-49 and 472,000 among the 25-54 demo. Dallas got 773,000 among the 18-49 and 917,000 among the 25-54. Last night was also a series low for Dallas. Monday Mornings is the debut of executive producer David E. Kelley on cable. The show is based on a book by CNN chief medical correspondent Sanjay Gupta, who also serves as co-executive producer. Gupta’s upcoming Monday Mornings novel is set at Chelsea General and follows the lives of five surgeons as they push the limits of their abilities and confront their personal and professional failings.

It appears that Dallas just ain’t Dallas without J.R.
That makes no sense. He’s still on the show. Larry Hagman didn’t pass away until several episodes were shot, and he’s in the ones that are currently airing.
It makes perfect sense. I was a big fan of the first season of the reboot, but, like everybody else watching, I knew that it was the JR stuff that kept the series interesting (the younger actors are woefully miscast). Knowing JR won’t be around past five or so episodes, I didn’t bother tuning in this year, and I’m sure I’m not alone.
If he’s what made the show interesting, then presumably he’s still making it interesting in the episodes he’s in. But rather than enjoy the final scenes of the character–and the work of actor–you claim to enjoy, you’d rather just bail now? In that case, why do you watch any television? After all, every show will eventually stop and every character you presumably enjoy will ultimately disappear. Why bother watching any show at all knowing that will eventually be the case?
bobby ewing is part of it as well. the other aren’t misscast, just different. i think JR son dos look like him
I love Larry Hagman but that’s not the only thing that makes the show what it is. Stop moving the times and days the series comes on and the network waited so long to put the show back on. I still will keep watching to see how they exited J.R character. Dallas Fan For Life!!!!
Monday Mornings was a great show. Best from Kelley in a while. For a pilot, it was very compelling and well acted. He’s got his usual snap and sarcasm back.
Despite the lower ratings, I’m sure NBC would have rather had this than Do No Harm. TNT needs to get off their collective asses and promote these two series.
One of the things I think people keep missing– and is just as important as TNT debuting these shows during the regular season (and not in Summer, when Dallas thrived)– Larry Hagman’s death is hanging over Dallas like a shroud. I know many people who have said they just can’t stand to watch.
Still the screen popped when he was on last night. I played one scene over 3 times, mainly because I knew I wouldn’t be seeing something that deliciously fun in the very near future.
Being better than Do No Harm is not really a compliment, but considering how awful Monday Mornings pilot was, I understand it is the only one that can be offered.
Talk about manipulative, heavy handed deployment of characters and future story arcs. Want to bet Dr. Spock will have to face his human side in episode 6?
I knew it was a mistake for TNT to pick up Monday Mornings and not Harry’s Law. I bet anyone a million dollars that if TNT had picked up Harry’s Law, this article would have been titled…Harry’s Law makes cable debut to record ratings, Sorry NBC.
What is going on with Dallas? The ratings drop is unexpected so soon after it’s debut. There has been little press touting it’s return but I thought the unfortunate passing of Hagman was a reminder the new season was starting last month.
Is this maybe going to get a signficant DVR bump?
TNT promotion of their shows has been sorely lacking. I’m afraid that they will see a significant drop in ratings in their other shows as well. They have a 9 month break in seasons with their summer shows. Fans forget about them when they have to wait that long between seasons.
The Closer spin off Major Crimes which comes back for Season 2 this summer will suffer in the ratings if TNT does not start promotion NOW!!!
I rarely watch TNT and I’ve seen many promos for Monday Mornings. Hell, there was even one during the post-Super Bowl airing of Elementary (which means around 20 million saw it).
Blame promotion all you want, but its the shows quality.
I saw many promotions for this show while watching TNT programs. But to tell you the truth it didn’t look like much fun.
Rantman is 100% on the money with regard to the timing; basic cable shows are always going to show bigger numbers during the summer when they have fewer network competition siphoning off viewers. Will be very interested in the actual Live+7 numbers here, too.
I’m sorry, but MONDAY MORNINGS was a weak outing — David E. Kelley or no. It was so damn moody for a pilot, and the premise is very odd (even if loosely based on real, peer-based medical review of cases). When Ving Rhames threw the newspaper at Doctor 007, I wanted to throw my remote and turn it off. This is no E.R. or GREY’S ANATOMY finding itself on TNT.
By comparison, DALLAS seems like an odd drop off to me. Maybe Rantman is right? Maybe viewers find it “unseemly” to watch Larry Hagman onscreen so soon after his death, because the show moves fast and delivers. And both Henderson and Metcalfe do a great job of filling the shoes of Hagman and Duffy.
Monday was like an awful rehash of Grey’s Anatomy with bad acting from good actors and horrible dialogue (with Alfred Molina playing the male Bailey, but with a bow tie!).
“Dallas” is not retaining viewers because the characters are cardboard-thin, the two male leads are as wooden as oaks, the younger ladies are utterly forgettable and the writing is simply atrocious. Aside from the occasional savage riposte given to Hagman, every exchange in the script is weighed down with leaden, ridiculous exposition. Unlike the original, this reboot is not rooted in any kind of reality, there’s no sense of family, no Texas flavor at all (can someone besides Hagman please be allowed a twang?) and the wealth and power of the Ewings seems to have been obliterated (why does the Southfork interior now resemble a start-up home in some nameless subdivision?).
The original “Dallas” fans have checked out of this reboot and it’s not compelling enough to attract a younger demo. A pity, because in someone other than Cynthia Cidre’s incapable hands, this idea would have had substantial legs.
Sounds like you have an axe to grind rather than a formidable opinion on the show. They are doing a great job with this reboot. The only thing I agree with you on is the interior of Southfork is WAY off. Bobby & Anne’s bedroom is not that of millionaires.
Your comments are pure nonsense. The Dallas TV show actors are doing a wonderful job.
Its debut was weak because TV viewers are TIRED of doctor shows and lawyer shows and cop shows and singing shows….and blah blah blah…..we are getting VERY tired of reality shows.
Right now, someone at TNT is calling Dean Devlin to ask if they can have “Leverage” back. (And if not, they should be!)
They’re not. Leverage was their lowest-rated original show when it was still on. Every network would cancel it, not only TNT.
Actually TNT sabotaged Leverage by not promoting it this season. Many people I know did not know tht it had come back on or that the day had changed because of this. Leverage, while it may have had lower ratings, had consistant ratings averaging 4 million viewers per episode where TNTs other shows have not. R&I have dropped 2 million views, Dallas 4 million viewers, and MC 2 million. Southland doesn’t count because it was cancelled by another network first so it is not a TNT original program. The only show worthy of praise is Falling Skies and that is because it is an original idea (not many people get the sci-fi network so this is original for your basic tv channels) Leverage was original and with proper promoting it would have done even better. TNT as a whole has taken a major fall in ratings, so maybe they should cancel themselves lol.
They got what they deserved in the ratings, weak writing brings you that. Leverage was never a huge hit for TNT, they can consider themselves lucky TNT was willing to give them 5 seasons. Instead of bashing them, you should thank them.
CORRECTION: Dr. Gupta’s novel was published last year – March 13, 2012 (and has been very well-received, over the past 11 months).
I forgot it was on last night. Wasnt Dallas on in the summer last year? Thats where it belongs. Maybe if it came on in the spring, when NBA on TNT would have promoted it, could have helped, because Ive seen ZERO promos for it. And yes, Hagmans still on it, but I fear once hes off, this Dallas will go the way of the Cowboys-over and done!
I have watched TNT for years because of The Closer and now Major Crimes. Promotion of their shows has been of extremely poor quality. Dallas had the most promotion of any show on that network, very little for Monday Mornings. I didn’t watch Elementary so didn’t see the promotion for MM. TNT should be using the talk shows, late night and morning shows for promotion but they rarely do. They need to create a buzz for their shows but are unwilling to pay the big bucks to do it!! They use free or cheap publicity such as Twitter, Facebook, magazines and papers which have a very limited audience. That’s one of the reasons Leverage failed!
Monday Mornings was way too over the top. Are they going to put some poor doctor in the hot seat every week? That will get old quickly. And NO one goes to the operating room with a new diagnosis of a tumor in two hours. The patient would need a work up that was more thorough. If the show continues this way it is going to be a drag and seem very unrealistic and overly dramatic. I watched once and I think once is enough.
Completely agree. New Dallas is atrocious and a slap in the face to what the original show was all about. I hope it’s cancelled soon.
“Monday Mornings” is not a TV series, but an example of a plot device within a TV series. For example, on “Gray’s Anatomy” one character could face a peer review board and tell of an experience in the past week.
But the greatest example comes from “The West Wing.” In one episode, Josh appears before a group of college students and tells of his experience in a somewhat typical White House day. That is the episode where Josh has to do the press briefing because CJ had a root canal. Things quickly break down and President Bartlet learns that he had a secret plan to fight inflation.
I think the title hurts. After going through so many during pre-production, the best they could come up with was MONDAY MORNINGS? Talk about generic! It could be anything from a sitcom to a drama about an AM news program.
For the average consumer, “Monday Mornings”, may seem dull but Folks this is Reality and imformation u would never be exposed to without being in the Medical Field.
KUDOS TO THIS SHOW!!
This show is great! They dont drag with anything. Everything is constantly moving! Its as good a show as there is. It was a msiatke putting it on Monday Nights. Theres a lot of other shows going on including WWE raw which is a cable machine!!!!!
RE: Monday Mornings
The goal of the morbidity and mortality conference is ongoing education through a moderated assessment of error and complication. The portrayal of the conference as character assassination, public punishment and shaming is inaccurate. I hope that – if the series continues – this aspect of the conference is developed. I hope that the series will evolve into the development of unique characters agains this backdrop.
I watched the original Dallas faithfully and have tuned to the TNT reboot, and I think they have done a fabulous job of weaving the storylines involving the younger actors with our Dallas favorites. There is no doubt the show’s summer ratings and current ratings are an apples-to-oranges comparison. While some of the lines may be a little cheesy, the actors are doing a great job, especially Josh Henderson and Jesse Metcalfe. The veterans deliver as expected. Here’s to a great Season 2 and many more!
New Dallas time slot / day is not working
JR has been the cornerstone of the show always
but other characters have been turned up a notch
and there is still plenty on Dallas to see
NBC should bring back ER. I bet its ratings would be good. Bring back all the old characters. I dont care what salary it would take to get clooney but i bet it would be worth all the other cancelled Dr shows
Just saw the second episode of Monday Mornings and loved it! I thought it looked great, was visually interesting, and I enjoyed seeing the characters develop, especially the kinder side of Hooten. I really like the cast. And much more accurate medical than Greys!
As an original veiwer of all of the original Dallas programs, it has taken a while to get used to the new cast. It will be difficult to get used to not having JR. But if the original older cast is used more, the new series will eventually survive. Dallas is something different than what we have been seeing for several years. Good luck.
