UPDATE, 12:21 PM: Despite initial record-breaking overnight ratings, Super Bowl XLVII failed to eclipse the record 111.3 million viewers who watched last year’s game on NBC. Airing on CBS, Sunday’s game garnered an audience of 108.41 million, also down from the 111 million who watched Super Bowl XLV in 2011. With those numbers in, Super Bowl XLVII is now the third most watched program in U.S. TV history. Still, with an average fast national share of 46.3/69, the Baltimore Ravens-San Francisco 49ers matchup was the second-highest-rated Super Bowl in 27 years. Only the 1986 Super Bowl between the Chicago Bears and New England Patriots did better with a 48.3/70.

PREVIOUSLY, 6:29 AM: The Baltimore Ravens won the game but Super Bowl XLVII was a victory for CBS on Sunday. With an average overnight household rating of 48.1/71, the game was the highest-rated Super Bowl in metered market history. The matchup between the Ravens and San Francisco 49ers in New Orleans breaks the 47.9/71 record set by Super Bowl XLV in 2011. It’s also up 1% from the 47.8/71 of last year’s New York Giants-New England Patriots game: Super Bowl XLVI on NBC was the most-watched event in U.S. TV history with a total of 111.3 million viewers. In its ratings today, CBS excluded the span from 8:45-9:15 PM ET that saw a power outage hit the Superdome, pulling data instead from the 6:30-845 PM and 9:15-10:45 PM slots.

Sunday’s game peaked with a 52.9/75 in its last nail-bitting half hour, when it looked like the 49ers might pull off a historic comeback from what had been a double-digit deficit before the power outage. Beyoncé’s halftime show extravaganza, which occurred in the 8-8:30 PM time slot, scored a 48.2/71. That’s down from the 48.1/72 of Madonna’s 2012 halftime performance. Following the Super Bowl and starting late because of the outage delay, CBS freshman drama Elementary averaged 12.0/24 in metered markets. The 11:11 PM ET start of the contemporary Sherlock Holmes series was the latest for any post-Super Bowl program in the prime placement postion. Fast affiliate ratings are not time-zone adjusted, so expect to see them change in the final numbers. (Time-period adjusted fast nationals are expected later this morning, and we’ll update then.)
