UPDATE, 12:21 PM: Despite initial record-breaking overnight ratings, Super Bowl XLVII failed to eclipse the record 111.3 million viewers who watched last year’s game on NBC. Airing on CBS, Sunday’s game garnered an audience of 108.41 million, also down from the 111 million who watched Super Bowl XLV in 2011. With those numbers in, Super Bowl XLVII is now the third most watched program in U.S. TV history. Still, with an average fast national share of 46.3/69, the Baltimore Ravens-San Francisco 49ers matchup was the second-highest-rated Super Bowl in 27 years. Only the 1986 Super Bowl between the Chicago Bears and New England Patriots did better with a 48.3/70.

PREVIOUSLY, 6:29 AM: The Baltimore Ravens won the game but Super Bowl XLVII was a 
victory for CBS on Sunday. With an average overnight household rating of 48.1/71, the game was the highest-rated Super Bowl in metered market history. The matchup between the Ravens and San Francisco 49ers in New Orleans breaks the 47.9/71 record set by Super Bowl XLV in 2011. It’s also up 1% from the 47.8/71 of last year’s New York Giants-New England Patriots game: Super Bowl XLVI on NBC was the most-watched event in U.S. TV history with a total of 111.3 million viewers. In its ratings today, CBS excluded the span from 8:45-9:15 PM ET that saw a power outage hit the Superdome, pulling data instead from the 6:30-845 PM and 9:15-10:45 PM slots.

Sunday’s game peaked with a 52.9/75 in its last nail-bitting half hour, when it looked like the 49ers might pull off a historic comeback from what had been a double-digit deficit before the power outage. Beyoncé’s halftime show extravaganza, which occurred in the 8-8:30 PM time slot, scored a 48.2/71. That’s down from the 48.1/72 of Madonna’s 2012 halftime performance. Following the Super Bowl and starting late because of the outage delay, CBS freshman drama Elementary averaged 12.0/24 in metered markets. The 11:11 PM ET start of the contemporary Sherlock Holmes series was the latest for any post-Super Bowl program in the prime placement postion. Fast affiliate ratings are not time-zone adjusted, so expect to see them change in the final numbers. (Time-period adjusted fast nationals are expected later this morning, and we’ll update then.) In the meantime, below is a list of the five highest-rated Super Bowls ever in overnight ratings, as well as the top 10 metered markets for Sunday’s game.

It’s easier to create media hype and attention w/a big start to market it than to talk about what a half-time show will be about in terms of a visually appealing show. That said I agree, as I can’t remember the last time I actually watched a half-time show. This year I took a quick shower and then made some grub prior to kickoff.
I thought Madonna did good. I thought this show could have been a little more G and a little less PG-13.

I really did not care who won the game but I do think there was a bad call at the end where there is no question that holding was involved and not called. This could have changed the outcome of the game.
The call for interference could have been made on both offense and defense. There was pushing by both players. No call was the right call.
I agree that the entertainment was lousy. the female entertainers are dressed way too provocative for the family audience. I and many of my friends would love to see them bring back the marching bands.

True story, the Royal Rumble ended with a WWE Championship match between CM Punk and The Rock.
The Rock had the champion on the ropes and was just about to deliver the Rock Bottom when the lights went out. When they came back on moments later, Rock was laid out and lost the match. However he got the rematch right away and won.
Very surprised by this! One would think that more Tv’s were turned off the half. The Ravens were blowing out the 49ers in the first half, Beyonce’s performance might have been the worst in Superbowl History along with the power failure.
I yearn for the good old days about 20-30 years ago when the game was the main event and not an absolutely horrid, untalented pole dancer half-time show, mostly rotten commercials, and pampered billionaires and millionaires life stories.

First let me say that I am not a 49ers fan, but what happened to them in Super Bowl 47 was an absolute crime. Not only was the play in the end zone blown by the officials, so was the kick off in the secon half. That should never have been a touchdown. I can’t believe that the officials didn’t call holding on the Ravens. There were two Ravens holding one of the 49ers players as the play was developing. They actually had there arms wrapped around him as the runner went by. I have no idea how the officials didn’t see it. It happened right in front of them. The officials sucked.
The officials made bad calls in both directions. I saw the 49ers holding on at least 10 plays and no penalty called. Flacco was hit hard out of bounds and still no penalty. That power outage for 34 minutes took the Ravens momentum away, but they held on in the end.
Is it just me, or did Beyonce look and sound like an absolute wreck? She never had any real musical depth, so when her voice starts to go and she starts to look like a 40 year-old mom (which is clearly happening), it’s time to pack it in.

Obviously you do have a skin in the game… the refs were officiating consistantly throughout the entire game… basically they were letting the players play. They let numerous holds on offense and defense slide for both teams. Not to mention the power outage which clearly benefitted the niners. Sounds like you have sour grapes over the outcome…
