It was a battle of the TV titans last night and no one walked out of the arena unscathed. First of all, CBS’ Survivor (2.4/7) returned for its 26th season Wednesday, but it did not come back strong. The 90-minute premiere of Survivor: Caramoan – Fans vs. Favorites was down 23% from last year’s winter debut, marking the series’ lowest-rated series premiere ever. About 8.96 million watched. Meanwhile,
head-to-head with Survivor last night was that other seasoned reality heavyweight: Five weeks into its 12th season, American Idol (4.3/12) started its Girls Only Hollywood Week on Wednesday. Slipping 7% from last week’s show, last night’ marked the lowest adults 18-49 Idol Wednesday since July 10, 2002, and its least-watched Wednesday since August 7, 2002 — from the show’s first season. Still, Idol was the night’s most-watched show with 13.37 million tuning in.

CBS followed Survivor last night with a repeat of The Big Bang Theory (1.6/4) and a new CSI (2.1/6), which fell 13% from last week to a series low for the 13-season investigative drama.
On ABC, The Middle (1.9/6) fell 17% from last week’s show to hit a season low. The Neighbors (1.7/5) was flat with its February 6 show while Modern Family (3.8/10) rose a slight 3%. Out of the Idol and Survivor slot storm, Suburgatory (2.2/6) saw a rise of 10% from last week and Nashville (1.8/5) bopped up 6%.
NBC’s Whitney (1.2/4) was flat with last week, but Guys With Kids (1.0/3) slide 17% to hit a new low for the freshman comedy. Law & Order: SVU (1.6/4) was up 7% from last week and Chicago Fire (1.9/5) stayed flat.
The CW had originals of Arrow (1.1/3), which was up a tenth from last week, and Supernatural (1.0/3), which was flat with its February 6 airing.

I don’t know about you guys I watch SUpernatural and Southland on TNT
I wonder how ratings opener on Southland were
Will not watch American Idol again until they get rid of Nicki Minaj. She makes me sick. I used to be a faithful watcher, but not this year.
I generally do not allow the judges to dictate my viewing. But Nicki has made it very difficult. I skipped most of the audition rounds because she is so awful to watch and listen to.
She’s the only one who makes any sense. Mariah offers little input, Keith Urban is barely there and Randy is Randy. Nicki Minaj is the only judge who seems engaged and invested and remembers contestants from one round to the next.
And yet she’s still insufferable. That stupid British accent she occasionally puts on?!
Lowest rated series premiere? Are you British?
I do not care to see repeat players on SURVIVOR. Maybe it is time, too, for the series to go to one cycle per year. (Bad week for Jeff Probst!)
THE MIDDLE is so good. Sorry to see it fumble. I hope NASHVILLE grows through winter and spring.
Oh, NBC! SVU is tired but CHICAGO FIRE is appealing. Wonder if Dick Wolf could revive LAW & ORDER, the original? I am not enjoying the 8 PM comedies.
A masterpiece such as Whitney flat? Hard to believe. That other comedic gem Guys With Kids down? You must be kidding! The writing on both shows is top-notch,the acting is superb,the-oh-who am I kidding?HA HA HA HA AND HA!
I think Survivor has run its course. Also, I only listened to one of the AI girls’ group, not watching, and I was shocked when I heard the judges wildly praising them. That particular girls’ group (the one with the crazy, boastful girl who almost didn’t show up) were all over the place, pitch-wise. What’s the point of AI if the judges’ standards are as low as the floor? Nicki Minaj isn’t even a singer.
I cannot watch Nashville anymore because it is too so painful to see Connie Britton waste her talents on this uninspired schlock.
CSI low is an anomaly. Survivor is running long in the tooth, needs to be cancelled. BBT is not a good lead in for CSI, bad scheduling CBS. CSI has a few more seasons left in it…don’t count it out.
Survivor rocks! It’s the best show on TV! This may be it’s 12th season, but as far as I’m concerned, it can continue for another 12 seasons!
@Sara, Survivor season 12 was in 2006 (Panama). It’s had another 14 seasons already.
But relative to other full production tv it is fairly cheap to make and is almost fully sponsored. It also sells well, so it won’t be going anywhere for a while but this may prompt a shakeup.
Personally I hope that Probst doesn’t get kicked off because he is a brilliant host. Although I’m sure the production team and network know that given how long they’ve kept him.
I told my husband straight off that this “Survivor” will not include me as a viewer. My husband agreed and we chose to watch a video we rented. Survivor fans can only take so much of the repeat worst players. And then to put them all together on the same show, give us a break! Must be a wind down for the show to have to reach down to reach the crowd.
The Survivor fans are starting to realize just how dishonest the producers are with the show. In a preseason interview, ‘Fan’ Julia admitted that not only was she recruited for the show (instead of applying), she had only watched a couple of EPISODES of the show – not even a couple of SEASONS. For those that don’t know (and judging by the ratings, that’s many of you) this season of Survivor is “Fans vs. Favorites 2.” The so-called fans are supposed to be hardcore fans of the show – that’s how Survivor advertises it. Yet they recruit contestants who aren’t even fans of the show (and admit as much in interviews) and who have barely watched the show at all.
In addition, one of the returning ‘Favorites’ was the first one booted off of the season she was on. So in a competition that lasts 39 days, she was there for three days — yet the producers call her a favorite and bring her back. Easily 98% of the hardcore fans of the show think that this is absurd.
What I’m getting at is that between returning players and the dishonest/bizarre tactics of the producers, true fans of Survivor have continued to be driven away from what was once a fantastic show.
Person of Interest best new series on TV this year so far.
