The premiere of Zero Hour (1.3/4) on Valentine’s Day saw the full-time return of Anthony Edwards to primetime more than a decade after he left ER. Unfortunately for ABC, on a night that traditionally sees lower viewership, the conspiracy drama marked the lowest-rated in-season debut for a scripted show ever on the network. Facing off against American Idol in the 8 PM time slot, Zero Hour was down 41% from the September 27 premiere of Last Resort, a show that is now cancelled, and 38% from the March 15 premiere of Missing. That still pales compared to the January 31 premiere of the now cancelled Do No Harm on NBC which got a 0.9/3) and was the lowest rated in-season premiere ever of any scripted show on the any of the Big Four networks.
Zero Hour wasn’t the only show having a rough night. In its second week of its fourth season and also head-to-head with Idol on Fox, NBC’s Community (1.1/4) fell 42% from its season debut last week to hit a series low. ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy (2.7/7) didn’t have to face Idol, but it was down 13% from last week to also hit a series low. In its second show of the Girls Only Hollywood Week, Idol (3.6/11) itself was also down. The competition series slid 12% from last week’s Guys Only Hollywood Week Part 2 show. Following Idol, a new Glee (1.7/5) took a bigger hit, falling 23% its February 7 show.
The most watched show of the night, The Big Bang Theory (5.4/17) pulled in 17.63 million viewers on CBS last night but was down in the demo 13% from last week. Two and a Half Men (3.8/11) was dipped 7% from its February 7 show and Person of Interest (3.0/8) slipped a slight 3% too. Elementary (2.2/6) was flat with last week’s show. ABC’s Scandal (2.8/8) was flat with last week’s show but for the first time in its history the political drama built on its Grey’s lead in. Scandal won the 10 PM time slot in the key 18-49 demo. Elsewhere on NBC on Thursday, Parks and Recreation (1.5/5) fell 25% from its show last week while The Office (2.0/6) was down 5% Slotted to replace Do No Harm, a Law & Order: SVU(1.0/3) repeat ended the night for NBC. On The CW, The Vampire Diaries (1.0/3) was down a tenth from its February 7 show as was Beauty And The Beast (0.5/1) CBS topped the night in both overall viewers and among adults 18-49.

What fucking idiot at ABC thought Valentines Day would be the best time to premiere an expensive new TV series?
Yeah, that was a bad move on ABC’s part. The show is pretty good, so I’ll tune in again (assuming ABC actually decides to keep this show on the air).
The same idiot who thought Zero Hour was a good show. This was Paul’s baby. He bought it in the room. He has no business running a major network.
Seems like they want this series to be D.O.A. I don’t watch a lot of ABC but the only add I’ve seen for it was on Modern Family the night before. Seems like a fun show but the marketing is terrible – Zero Hour doesn’t even sound like anything.
I seen quite a few ads for this show and it was so in your face, it was scary. That is marketing for a movie. ABC would have done better by airing Charlie Brown in the slot.
ABC was looking to bury it.
Casey’s answer key: The same fucking idiot that brought in: The Bitch in Apt 23, Nashville, 666 Park Ave., The Neighbors, Suburgatory, Red Widow, the first 3 episodes of Malibu Country. When you have no moral compass, British filth is your middle name, and can’t schedule for shit- VOILA!
Paul Lee likes over-the-top aggressively terrible television.
Not a problem if you’re appealing to kids and teenagers at ABC Family, not so great if you’re trying to appeal to adults with crazy shows.
Wait, a Halloween episode scheduled in February didn’t draw in a lot of viewers?
um the NEWS of the night was SCANDAL building on Grey’s lead in the demo. Get on that.
Scandal needs to be on cable. We need to see MORE of Kerry Washington and FAST.
Uh Jason … what do you want to bet that Scandal falls when the final numbers come in this afternoon.
Uh TV watcher must not actually watch TV cause Scandal is the hottest thing on network right now.
OH NO! WHAT HAPPENED TO MY FAVORITE– Oh, wait. It was valentines day. Panic averted.
Will the Sony Pictures Television/NBC execs who fired Harmon take responsibility for finally killing Community? Bet you they don’t.
That’s an all-time series low for American Idol. And it’s only February.
It’s ridiculous that these numbers are being taken seriously. No one I know watches anything they haven’t DVR’d. Premiere or not. Cable or Network. Yet Networks will continue to cancel new shows based on this rapidly becoming archaic form of calculating viewership. We all know its bogus – why don’t they?
To be fair, most networks should know what works and what doesn’t. In terms of programming. That Zero Hour premiered to very low audiences, on a bad night, is an indictment against the show. Live, plus 7, numbers might improve the show a little, but that is unlikely. On the other hand, Big Bang Theory will likely benefit from the same system as people likely took in a dinner and a movie, and returned to watch Scandal.
These numbers already include DVR playbacks until 3 a.m. This is called “live plus same day.” The networks see the other DVR numbers (live + 3 days and live + 7 days) but it takes several weeks for live + 7 to show up in the press. Also, most importantly, there are ratings for the commercials, including DVR views, and the networks see them and are apparently making their decisions based on that, plus on the iTunes and On Demand and Hulu numbers that we DO NOT see in the press. So I don’t know what you’re talking about. Also, the “no one I know does this or that” argument doesn’t hold up. People you know are likely to be similar to you. That’s not a statistically random sample so it’s not useful for surveys. There are still plenty of people who don’t have DVRs.
Person of interest rocks. Big time mistake from CBS with post super bowl slot. POI is best scripted and acted crime drama on broadcast tv. And only one hit young drama on CBS. Third season is usually best for hit dramas so will grow and more. POI is only one growing season to season drama on broadcast TV.
Next season POI could(noy should) be ancho on wednesdays at 8 with NCIS Red at 9 and CM at 10.
That’s because it stars Jesus.
I thought Zero Hour was solid.
Nice that ABC decided to put it on the one night of the year guys have to turn off their sets and turn on their women.
I was really looking forward to Zero Hour. The premise looked very interesting. Unfortunately the show is not very good which is too bad. It tries to look expensive but falls short. I don’t see this lasting the 13 episodes.
Personally, I think Zero Hour should have been a movie.
There are a number of tv shows that should be tv movies or mini series instead. Like The Following.
Gee, a drama with a segmented audience didnt debut well on ABC Thur @8, on Valentines Day, following ANOTHER segmented drama that bombed same time, same channel? Who’d a thunk it! I DVRed it, now I dont know if I should watch it, since most likely it will be whacked soon!
I would think the webs should have used the holiday tie-in. Seems more and more the webs ignore the calendar and common sense. What world do network exces inhabit?
This would have beena good night for ABC’s recent Hallmark movie to air, coulped with a couple of winning comedy episodes.
I would like some music or such but variety is dead. We had GLEE and it even slipped.
I tire of these dark adventures and conspiracies. ZERO HOUR ciould be better than any in the genre but one top offering, LOST, lostme with all its oddities and twists.
It was a party night. But not Halloween, NBC! you crappedon COMMUNITY as AMC is with HAPPY ENDINGS. Why when youhave something that can work, you ruin it?
Zero Hour was good. Too bad not enough – if any – PR/Advertising for the show was done.
Charlie’s Angels, Missing,Last Resort,Zero Hour. That’s some history Abc has of failures on Thursdays at 8PM. I suppose they have a lot in common with Nbc’s history of failures on Thursdays at 10PM. After Zero Hour is canceled(&it will be eventually)what gem will Abc roll out next?
I have a Radio/TV/Film degree, I am a consistent if not avid TV watcher, and I am also a huge fan of ER…and I have never once heard anything at all about the show “Zero Hour.” I had no idea it existed, no idea that Anthony Edwards was returning to TV, nothing. Yes, debuting a new show on Valentines Day is the dumbest idea ever, but I think there may be an issue with the marketing campaign as well…
The show was not bad – Bad time slot. And Valentines day ? Really? Fire the idiot that thought hat smart thinking or lack of it.
that was smart thinking
Over 20 minutes of commercials per hour, plus on-screen promos covering the actual show, plus the near certainty that a serialized drama will be cancelled before ever getting to a satisfactory ending – who in their right minds would invest their time in any network fiction at this point?
The numbers for this show, and for NBC’s “Do No Harm” finally prove that there is a point where even the most dedicated couch potatoes say “enough is enough” and find another source of entertainment.
Sing it sister. I agree with you a thousand percent. Who wants to watch network shows when half the screen is obscured by moving ads for other shows? enough enough enough enough enough!!!!!
So true. With the nets being so quick to cancel, if people even think it may fail, they refuse to watch. Then, next thing you know a few hundred people are out of work…again
Fox and Cowell better have something up their sleeves for X-Factor’s return or it will be DOA judging by Idol’s wobbly performance this season. Zero Hour will require audience patience and involvement to catch on and could benefit from a more linear narrative. Gonna be a tough one to sustain.
Time for ABC to put Grey’s to sleep, get some good comedies in the 8-10 block and have Scandal be a 10 PM watercooler show.
Zero should’ve been on cable. It looked like an ABC show… which = yuck.
A look at the February “HITS”- American Idol falls to a 3.6 proving that new judges won’t aways turn things around. Glee- FOX’s newest Humpty Dumpty(move over THE FOLLOWING)S P L A T! ABC’s Zero Hour had zero chance of opening big on VALENTINES DAY(IDIOTS). Hopefully it grows next week(slim but hopeful chance). Community crash as expected!
That is true for sure. We DVD everything.
Anybody see “house of Lies” with
Matt Damon ? Hated the show. Like Damon and Cheadle but hate the show. Dumb writing & insult to audience.
Say so long to Zero Hour which will ultimately result in less than a one rating as it progresses forward, if they’re lucky to get as such.
