EXCLUSIVE: We will get a glimpse of what a multi-camera Up All Night would look like after all. I have learned that NBC plans to film one multi-camera episode of the sophomore comedy without star Christina Applegate, who departed the series on Friday. I hear the episode will be directed by master multi-camera
helmer James Burrows, who is doing three pilots this season. When NBC in October decided to turn softly rated single-camera comedy Up All Night into multi-camera, the network ordered five episodes to be shot in front of a live audience. That order has now been cut to one. It is unclear whether Applegate will be replaced; there had been rumors that NBC was eying other actresses, including Friends alumna Lisa Kudrow. The future of Up All Night is still up in the air while co-stars Will Arnett and Maya Rudolph are getting pilot offers. NBC had no comment.
The multi-camera version of Up All Night is being shepherded by Linda Wallem, the show’s third showrunner following Jon Pollack and Tucker Cawley. Up All Night creator/executive producer Emily Spivey left the show last month. At TCA last month, NBC Entertainment president Jennifer Salke called the multi-camera revamp “a bit of an experiment”, but “we think it’s really one worth taking.”
In its original incarnation, Up All Night was a family comedy about new parents played by Applegate and Arnett, which was inspired by Spivey’s real-life experiences going back to work soon after giving birth. The workplace element was expanded and switched from a PR firm to an Oprah-like talk show when Rudolph was cast as Applegate’s boss, and there has been speculation that the series will shift even further in that direction when it becomes multi-camera.

Just let it go.
– xoxo, everyone.
I cannot believe they are continuing to waste money on this when it seems obvious that the show is dead. If they want the actors to stay at NBC, offer them new projects that might actually be successful.
Pull the plug.
They’re going to have more cameras than they will episodes.
Ohhhhhhh…..Sweet
So, essentially, they’re doing a “front” door pilot to see if there’s any interest in going forward with multi-cam’s new premise?
This is just another example of a failed show on NBC where they’re trying anything they can to save it from the chopping block. This show is done as NBC should just CXL it while they can save face.
It really is time to take Up All Night to live on a farm in the country where it can spend its days chasing rabbits and running wild and free.
You just gave us our new hit show. Thanks Britta!
Running Wilde! That was an underrated show.
What??! Why?? What’s the point?
Maya Rudolph with a show tailor-made for her? Surprised it hasn’t happened already…but it will. She can do it all and with the right combination could boost any network any night of the week. Bittersweet, funny, cute, special.
Right???!!!
The show should become all about Maya’s character. Write Christina and Will off.
Weird.
I’ve never seen this show. Is it as good as “Whitney”?
I NEVER post comments but for the love of God NBC please give this show a chance. Maya and Will and Chris Diamangreeksupphix are three of the funniest actors on Earth and Applegate, as much as I like her, was comedic dead weight. Also shows about working moms or stay at home moms or families, in most cases, are complete d*ck softeners. Sitcoms need to be funny first. If you want relatabilty, join a support group.
NBC, please, stop shooting yourself in the face. Just fire whoever you have making these decisions. The guy brought Smash with him from another network! for godsakes! The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over expecting a different result. Just, fire some people, Cancel some shows and start over.
I wonder if the Nbc honchos were “Up All Night” dreaming up this change? Really won’t do any good as the problem with this show is not its’ format/ # of cameras or any number of other excuses-MAYBE IT’S JUST NOT GOOD!
This scares me.
Instead of recasting… Reagan dies.
Chris loses his wife.
Ava loses her best friend.
Scott loses his sister.
Amy loses her mother.
Bring on those multi-camera laughs!
(Missy returns. She and Chris have hilarious sex in Gene and Terry’s closet by the end of the episode).
If anyone can make this work, it’s Jimmy Burrows.
One episode? Ridiculous. They should make 13 and air all of them.
Arnett and Rudolph are comedy pros. Applegate is pretty, but her comedy chops were never that great. Kelly Bundy was a one joke character, a dumb slut, and not that hard to play. She’s always thought of herself as a movie star(she’s not) , and probably thinks Anchorman 2 will finally make her one. (It won’t). But If this was announced as a pilot, everyone would be excited. Arnett and Rudolph do multi-cam directed by Jimmy Burrows? Sounds great to me.
The original premise was about going to work shortly after having a baby. It veered quickly to be about rich yuppies who didn’t need to work and had a toddler who was rarely seen or even mentioned.
I don’t get why Burrows would want to help steer this stinking, oops, SINKING ship.
The challenge?
Well, this is just ridiculous, now. And HILARIOUS! If only the show were ever as funny as what’s going on backstage! I hope we get to see this one sad multi-cam show. I was too young to see My Mother The Car.
I like the show and I’m looking forward to seeing this new incarnation. Give NBC props for trying something new. They should get Amy Phoeler to replace Christina Applegate. I’m bored with Parks and Rec though still watch.
For the love of god euthanize this show already. And while you’re at it NBC, get rid of Whitney and Guys With Kids. Christina Applegate is not a star, plain and simple.
Jeez. Without Applegate, you have no show. Applegate was never the problem, was she
I guess they’re thinking that Rudolph will make the show. Did she manage to do that in the past season, where the spotlight was on her? If not, what has changed that makes this a good idea?
Seriously. I wish other, deserving shows would get this much support.
