EXCLUSIVE: Hoping to tap a new vein in the young adult vampire genre that made Twilight Saga such a global hit, Reliance Entertainment and IM Global are co-financing the first installment of a new film franchise based on the six-volume Richelle Mead young adult novel series that will come to the screen as Vampire Academy: Blood Sisters. Daniel Waters, who wrote the iconic Sundance black comedy Heathers, has written the script for the first movie. His brother, Mean Girls helmer Mark Waters, will direct the film. Casting is in full swing for a summer shoot.

An international search led the producers to Zoey Deutch (Beautiful Creatures) and Australian newcomer Lucy Fry. They will play lead characters Rose and Lissa alongside Russian star Danila Kozlovski (We Are From The Future,) who will play the role of Dimitri.
The film will be produced by Michael Preger and his Preger Entertainment banner, Angry Films’ Don Murphy and Susan Montford, and Kintop Pictures’ Deepak Nayer. IM Global’s Stuart Ford is executive producer.
All six books have been bestsellers on The New York Times young adult list since the series debuted in 2007. Two of the books have been turned into graphic novels. The books tell the tale of Rose Hathaway, a 17-year-old girl who has a mental and spiritual bond with her vampire best friend Lissa. The two girls attend a special school for Vampires who struggle to retain some humanity while other Vampires become more feral.
“Tonally this so different from all these movies that are so solemn and serious,” IM Global’s Ford said. “This is as much Mean Girls as The Hunger Games. “It is snappy, irreverent, sexy and just a lot of fun. And we got the right director for that kind of movie.”
The Vampire Academy books were corralled as a film property by Miami-based Preger Entertainment. Preger is currently in development with a contemporized version of the sci-fi classic The Day Of The Triffids, with Sam Raimi and financier Good Universe. He brought the project to fellow Triffids producers Montford and Murphy and the trio partnered to bring the books to the screen.
“I was a fan of Richelle’s and have read all of her books,” Preger said. “She writes in way that is riveting no matter what your age. The key was to get people to read the books. Once they read one they want to read them all.”
They turned to Daniel Waters, looking for a tone to which teenagers could relate. His script for Heathers hit that mark so well that it’s often identified as the inspiration for anything teen that aspires to mix humor with angst and edge. Waters took on the project, and drafted his brother, who boarded the project as director.
“It was the best first draft I had ever read, and that includes other screenplays by my brother,” Mark Waters said. “This is a dream project for us, since we have wanted to work together for so long. Richelle’s mythology and the world she creates is so real and her voice so clear. These kids have real life, modern day problems. And they drink blood.” The popularity of the series was evident when they started a Facebook page for the film and got 238,000 signed up, a number much higher than a lot of films that have already been released.
At that point, Nayer, who previously produced Bend It Like Beckham, brought in Reliance and IM Global. “On a creative level we love the story and the creative team,” he said. “We also love the potential to do a series of six strong movies based on this beloved series of novels” he said. There could even be more as Mead has spun off characters from her Vampire Academy books into a second series, Bloodlines, two of which have already been released.
Reliance will finance the film and sister company IM Global’s Ford is handling foreign sales and will broker domestic.

Surely Vampire shows have jumped the shark?
1.) It’s not a show.
2.) Obviously not.
This is not like any other Vampire story, this is not crap Twilight.
Don’t prejudge. These books are brilliant. And Rose Hathaway is going to kick all your asses with her awesomeness.
i totally agree! i watched twlight last year when i was 14 and then read vampire acadamey and fell in love the Vampire Acadamey more than twlight. Richelle Mead’s method of writing is so intriguing that it is astounding to read for all ages
I agree. This sounds like a total pile of crap.
Your opinion is obviously that of a hater. Massive talent behind the camera, great books and great looking girls. We have a winner while you stay a loser.
READ THE BOOKS! Then you can call it crap! If you haven’t read the books keep your comments to yourself seeing how you don’t know anything about the story! By the way Vampire Academy is an Amazing series!
IT IS NOT! Have you read them all?! Look I hate Twilight and all that, and honestly all vampire movies went to crap after Queen Of The Damned and Underworld, but anyhow I’m not a big reader, I actually hate reading, but once I read these books I got hooked! So I’m more than excited for this movie!
You know what, if you think this is a “pile of crap” then why are reading an article about it. God. People enjoy these things. All your doing is spreading hate, and no one needs this. If you don’t have nothing nice to say then don’t say anything at all. I mean seriously. What if you are really excited about something, maybe your getting a new dog, and someone just go’s “dogs are piece of crap.” Your not going to like that. So keep your negativity to yourself.
The Vampire Academy series is nothing like Twilight. No offense to Twilight, but it was like a terrible sitcom that you could predict everything. I couldn’t stand vampire movies or books because of of Twilight and its portrayals of vampires and all of it. But i love the vampire academy series, because it doesn’t focus solely on vampires or anything. They’re just a small part or the bigger picture of it and how Rose’s life.
i hear that both lissa and rose will fall in love with dimitri
Uhh no. Don’t know where you heard that rumor, but it’s only Rose that fall in love with Dimitri. Unless they are going to change it in the movie which will be crap.
No, they are not changing the book. Richelle Mead confirmed this on her website. That was a rumor that started because a news website wrote a summary of the book and made up half of it…
That’s not a likely rumor. It would literally ruin the whole series if they both fell in love with Dmitri, because it would cut out Christian. More than likely someone mistook Lissa’s motherly affections from after she heals Dmitri as her falling in love with him.
This series is actually not very good. I tried to read them and yawned my through the whole thing. I like Mark Waters when he does comedy, but after suffering through the Spiderwick Chronicles I gotta say he’s really not cut out for this. Hope I’m wrong!
Ugh
This movie franchise is going to be HUGE. Can not wait to see where this goes. SO excited!
And pffft, there goes Mark Waters’ shot at a comeback. Sounds horrific
Have you read the books? They are absolutely fantastic and completely different to normal vampire books re: mythology. Yes, it has vampires and it’s a tired genre now (I bloody hate vampires but I’m a massive fan of the series), but maybe you should do a little research on the books this movie is based on before commenting.
OMG..
this is a good news.. when they start filming …
why have you changed the name to blood sisters that has NOTHING NOTHING TO DO WITH VA WHHHHYYYYY CANT YOU JUST KEEP IT THE SAME AS THE BOOK OR A YOU TRYING TO PUT A STUPID HOLLYWOOD TWIST ON IT IF SO DONT BOTHER MAKING THE FILM
Because people will automatically associate it with twilight since its about vampires. They won’t change the script.
It’s actually vampire academy: blood sisters. Blood sisters is the name of Russian copy of the series. It’s the name richelle mead picked out of all the different adaptations
Really? Cause I’m russian and I’m pretty sure that books here weren’t called ‘Blood sisters’
actually its the title of VA in Germany
“Blood Sisters” is the name of the GERMAN copy of the series not Russian.
I think it’s a reference to the bond. I agree i don’t like it, but it does make some sense. Plus it makes a distinction from the whole series and the first book.
I love the comments- the six books are a hundred times more riveting and exciting than Twilight. The series is going to be a major success. I am certain that Mister “Wow” wishes that Reliance picked up their movie like this. I look forward to seeing the entire series. Mark Waters is one of the good guys- congratulations!
I actually love this series. Great story about finding your own strength and power.
I HAVE SERIOUSLY WAITED FOR THESE BOOKS TO BECOME MOVIES FOR YEARS…
FINALLY IT’S HAPPENING. <3
And before you bash, this series is NOTHING like Twilight! It kicks Twilight's white bony behind!
Love the name! haha. and I agree totally kicks Twilight’s ass
Ive been waiting to hear this for years now. Loved the whole series and Blood lines is very good also.
I am a fan of young adult fiction. I was hesitant to read these books after the disappointment in the Bella character in both the Twilight books and movies. Vampire Academy was pretty amazing though. I am am thoroughly looking forward to these movies.
If you are thinking “Oh god not another vampire movie.” or even thinking that this book is “Another Twilight.” then you have got another thing coming. This book takes vampires to another level. There are basically 3 different kinds, Dhampir’s which are half human half vampire and they are the guardians of the Moroi, which are living vampires who eat food as well as drink blood, then there are the “dead” Strigoi, who are evil and drink dry everyone they drink from including other vampires. The Moroi have elemental powers and can control one of the 4 elements. Except Lissa she has the spirit element which is so rare no one knows anything about it or that it even exists for that matter. The girls kick ass and don’t rely on any guys to take care of them. I love this series and hope they don’t completely ruin it when they make the movie.
YES YES YES YES YES! YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW EXCITED I AM!
THEY BETTER NOT WRECK THIS MOVIE OR I DONT KNOW IF I’LL BE OKAY! I LOVE THESE BOOKS!
but…but…zoey looks nothing like rose! i do like lucy fry for lissa though, a good aussie girl haha
She looks exactly like Rose!
IKR! Zoey looks NOTHING like Rose!
I don’t know about the actress acting as Rose, sure it’s not quite what I had in mind but it’s not too bad. It’s Lisa I want to complain about. The actress doesn’t look anything like Lisa who is meant to look delicate and weak (physically and somewhat mentally in the beginning). She looks like Katniss with blonde hair.
That was my thought as well. I was pointing out all the flaws in the actors they chose to use. But zoey will work for rose if her hair is dyed to a brown that’s almost a black. Her skin tone is pushing it but will work. as for Lissa, well.. she’s is nothing like i would have expected. my biggest complaint was actually her eye brows color and shape. Her height will be alright as will her skin tone. Dimitri, needs long hair tho and not sure if hes as tall as hes supposed to be in the books, im pretty sure he was supposed to be like six ft seven and hes only like six one.
Before you all decide to jump the gun- this is not just another lame vampire movie. This is a unique world that Richelle Mead has created, so read the books before you judge. And if you don’t read, at least give the movie a chance.
i thought that ben barnes was at the top of the polls in all of the vampire academy related pages and forums. Dimitri is exactly like Ben according to the description in the books. There is also some contraversies about the actresses they chose to play as Rose and Lisa. There were many polls done on Facebook and other websites, did the producers even consider the actors on the Polls?
Ben is nothing like the books describe Dimitri. He is not tall enough, he is not the right age, he is not Russian (no his Russian accent is not good enough, believe me, I’m Russian)…
And he doesn’t want to be part of another movie franchise for teens. So foget about him already.
I also think Ben would be a good choice for Dimitri. When I first read the books, he is exactly how I pictured Dimitri in my mind. And if he’s not tall enough, or anything else, he doesnt have to be EXACTLY like the book says. Plus, they can make him look taller and such. In my opinion, he would be a better Dimittri, but that is just my opinion. Don’t hate me for it, and don’t post anything rude replying to this. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and that was mine.
I always wondered why Twilight got so much hype. The books were terrible, the characters were creepy or unlikeable and the writing was pretty terrible, and let’s not even begin with the horrible acting.
Richelle Mead’s Vampire Academy is actually pretty great and believable fiction. And no sparkly sissy vamps.
The most anticipated movie and casting for me…gone. Down the drain. Just like that. Oh dear. No Ben Barnes for real? Oh dear oh dear oh dear oh dear….
Really can’t wait. For anyone that hasn’t read the books, please don’t bother commenting with your negativity. Read them first then have an opinion of the upcoming movie.
I know having the word ‘vampire’ might be a little off putting since twilight but I mean damn!!! This is the total opposite of twilight, and there is NO similarities between the main characters, let’s just get past that now. Rose Hathaway is a total badass, she (literally) fights for what she believes in and for her loved ones. Unlike a lot of stories where the main girl is a damsel or whatever, rose and her main flame are equals. I think that’s was sets this story apart from others… anyway I’ll stop before this gets too long… THANK YOU FOR MAKING THIS HAPPEN GUYS! <3
It’s the name of the series overseas.
I have been wanting for these movies to start filming for along time now and I will be DEEPLY DISSAPOINTED if they change alot of things that happened in the book. Blood sisters? I actually kindof like it becuase the books aren’t just about dimitri and rose. Yes, it’s a big part but It’s about the bond, and dealing with it. Rose becoming a gardian : that’s a big thing for her. Mostly it’s about Lisa and rose getting through all the rough times together. So I’m a fan.
IKR??!!???!!!!!
Lovvveeee the VA series! Happy with all the crew producing it.. I also understand the name change to Blood Sisters, but I hope they have Vampire Academy in there too. Not too happy with who they’ve cast so far :\ They better live up to the expectations that us fans have put up. Rose better be as hilarious and flirty and dangerous, Lissa better be as angelic and loving, and Dimka better be that sexy Russian God we all imagine.
I’m not young enough for it to be ok to be a huge fan of the series, but I am anyway. After starting at the third book, the whole series and Rose’s determined drive for live just overwhelmed me. The end was a bit too rounded, where the rest of the series was raw and humourous. I really hope Zoey can pull off Rose, because srsly, Rose is not a nice girl and she came accross as someone with a lot of dark expressions and body language, while being sexy and tough. Zeoy does not make that impression on me, but it will be a test of her acting talents… I’m excited, non the less.
I am a huge fan, and just for the record I am in my late 30′s, I absolutely love this series and I am looking forward to seeing these books come to life. I also know a few others in my age range that love these books as well so this is not just for the teens or young adults, but for all age groups that love humor, sarcasm, attitude, and a true love story. So now I will sit back and impatiently wait for the movie’s to come out.. Thanks to you all for doing this !!
