Self-financing viral shorts to attract studio attention worked for Mortal Kombat‘s Kevin Tancharoen and Y The Last Man‘s Dan Trachtenberg. Now it’s stunt-veteran-turned-director Jesse V. Johnson’s turn. The helmer behind Anchor Bay‘s The Package and the recently announced Kill ‘Em All, John (both vehicles for former wrestler “Stone Cold” Steve Austin) put together $3500 and called in a lot of favors to make a “fan film” to demonstrate his chops beyond direct-to-video action fare. He cast Danish singer Nina Bergman as Wonder Woman and got Peter Stormare and Sons Of Anarchy‘s Timothy V. Murphy to play oily Nazis. The resulting video, produced by Hugh Daly and Faz Brahimi and aided by Johnson’s Station 3 manager and producing partner Kailey Marsh, made its way through the fanboy set after debuting today. That audience has been clamoring for Hollywood to figure out how to bring the DC heroine to life in the two years since NBC pulled the plug on David E. Kelley’s Wonder Woman series. Meanwhile Warner Bros.’ Justice League pic is still in the works and The CW last month rolled their Amazon project to next season. Watch Johnson’s Wonder Woman short here:

Um. No.
Why on earth is this on Deadline?? What’s next, are you gonna start posting random films from UCLA film school seniors?? This is so beyond horrible… SS Soldiers in “SS” tank tops??? Really??!! This guy wasn’t even trying to be remotely authentic. Why not just use aliens?
But didn’t you see the downtown LA skyline. No. This was totally authentic.
This was an entertaining two minutes. One thing I noticed right away, though, is a PLUS: Thank goodness whoever made this video is putting Wonder Woman back in her TRADITIONAL costume, not one of those god-awful PANTS outfits that show up, from time to time. As a straight male with genuine affection for tradition, I love to watch a shapely woman in short shorts.
Cheers,
Dan
it’s because NF has a woman-boner for this lame character. The only posts you ever see advocating a WW movie/show on the entire internet are on DHD. This completely awful short should be sent to everyone at WB/DC as proof-positive for why WW should be permanently shelved. Or at least put in “break only in case of emergency” glass in their development meeting for whenever some moronic development executive suggests doing a WW movie or show and they need to be reminded why it’s the dumbest of dumb ideas.
Wonder Woman should be shelved because you didn’t like a fan film? Riiiiight. Got it.
It’s a fan trailer, don’t lose sleep over it…
Those undershirts with insignia are correct; they were ‘sportshirts’ that were worn under the service shirt and tunic.
the ss tank top is accurate. It is a sports shirt used in PT training. Although there are many inaccurate items, the tank top is not.
The tank top is correct, research before you speak.
I don’t like her nose.
More substantially, if the stunts were not sped up nor slowed down – i.e. they played at actual speed – this fantasy trailer would be the laugh mess it was created to be.
“I don’t like her nose”, is probably the stupidest comment I’ve ever seen on Deadline…SAVE IT!
YES!!! I want those boots
That was meant to show he could direct more than direct to video? That looked like a direct to video audition.
Deadline is home to the harshest critics, but in this case, the criticism is more than justified. There is so much wrong with the filmmaking in this that I don’t even know where to begin. Why anyone would think it would act as an advert for a director’s skills is beyond me. I’ve seen better from film school students.
So can we get a Wonder Woman movie now, WB? This Johnson dude did more in two mins than that last crap pilot did in an hour…also, Ms. Marsh are you signing writers who have a take on this??
There is no “take” on this jumbled no-story mess.
If you perceive there to be potential “”"story”"” here, take a nap and let the drugs wear off before you try again to understand that there is no there there.
It’s a fan trailer, not even really a take…it’s cool though, I’ve watched it 3 times!!
Amen. Loved it!
I’ve seen a few of these fan films that looked really promising (the Portal one comes to mind), but this one felt a little stale and old. Bummer. I’m sure the guy was doing his best. Perhaps the reality is that Wonder Woman just isn’t that cool and no one could make her cool.
Good luck to him and I hope he has success, but I wouldn’t pay money to see a full length from what I’ve seen here.
Love Timothy V. Murphy – i hope Jesse gets the gig – a lot of heart in that piece.
I got to see this trailer before it went live and I have to say it’s really well done. So interesting that this could be his “in” towards making a film for the silver screen. And he’s got a great manager in Marsh, too.
Kailey Marsh is Wonder Woman
This is embarrassing.
Jessie is a class act, and deserves the recognition…
Friends don’t let friends make fan films.
Am I missing something? If this is someone trying to make something specifically “to demonstrate his chops beyond direct-to-video action fare,” I would suggest they missed the mark.
Ummm where
It…did not suck.
That was atrocious. Not everyone can be a director maybe this joker should stay doing stunt work.
And you should stick to sitting here typing deadline comments…
people are haters. this is pretty great and gives a flavor of what a good wonder woman story could be.
It’s not bad, certainly, but if I’m a studio, would I give him a directing gig based on this trailer? Absolutely not.
Now that’s the Wonder Woman we remember from the old days. Why the hell can’t we make anything this good? What the hell happened to my studio? Who put Robinov in charge he’s not a Warner we’d disown him if he was.
We can’t make anything this good because the people groomed to greenlight are the same ones posting idiotic comments on deadline. They come from the same cookie-cutter schools, and cookie-cutter circles, and they have no earthly effing idea what it’s like to live in lower-middle class America and actually watch television 3 hours a night because that’s the biggest form of entertainment in your town besides church. They get caught up on symantics and forget to enjoy something for the pure enjoyment of it… like a woman… in a superhero uniform known to MOST Americans… kicking some Nazi a$$… So WHAT if more development is needed… It’s 2 minutes not 44… It’s gritty and it’s cool… until some insider schmuck gets his hands on it and screws it all to hell.
This is a student film project right? No film professional with common sense would put money into something this cheesy and poorly conceived in hopes of launching a career. And that “actress” needs to retire. Maybe go eat a sandwich too.
Cutie!
The road to hell is paved with good intentions.
This is video is worse than malaria.
this was not good.
Not impressed.
At all.
Nice & loud, huh?
Rihanna is clearly the next Wonder Woman.
Tina Turner.
Nicki Minaj.
Okay, just because its a YouTube thing and a serious Deadline headline means nothing. This is bad!
If not for the announcement looks like a bad SNL spoof. Nothing at all inspired. In fact the kicks are from Crouching Tiger.
We don’t need this guy directing for the very reason he gives us with this video. Anyone could do what he just did. And studios don’t need him to be the anyone.
Forget it.
This was flawed, but he has the right idea tonally. And some interesting shots in here, esp the iconic image of her black hair blowing across her face. But I like the idea of putting her back in WWII a la Captain America. She’s of that era and she did not transition to modern-day… all due respect to Linda Carter.
The Lynda Carter show started in WWII as well.
boo! this was corny
