Self-financing viral shorts to attract studio attention worked for Mortal Kombat‘s Kevin Tancharoen and Y The Last Man‘s Dan Trachtenberg. Now it’s stunt-veteran-turned-director Jesse V. Johnson’s turn. The helmer behind Anchor Bay‘s The Package and the recently announced Kill ‘Em All, John (both vehicles for former wrestler “Stone Cold” Steve Austin) put together $3500 and called in a lot of favors to make a “fan film” to demonstrate his chops beyond direct-to-video action fare. He cast Danish singer Nina Bergman as Wonder Woman and got Peter Stormare and Sons Of Anarchy‘s Timothy V. Murphy to play oily Nazis. The resulting video, produced by Hugh Daly and Faz Brahimi and aided by Johnson’s Station 3 manager and producing partner Kailey Marsh, made its way through the fanboy set after debuting today. That audience has been clamoring for Hollywood to figure out how to bring the DC heroine to life in the two years since NBC pulled the plug on David E. Kelley’s Wonder Woman series. Meanwhile Warner Bros.’ Justice League pic is still in the works and The CW last month rolled their Amazon project to next season. Watch Johnson’s Wonder Woman short here:

Wow! Super cool. This has to make it big!
I agree – there is a lot of bitterness here – this fan-made trailer is shining on the geek sites! It validates and proves how out of touch many of these old crones really are.
Deadline is a film site, not a fan site. The video was presented as an example of the director’s work, and the directing is bad. Fan sites are concerned with how great it is to see their favorite character, which is why this will shine on those sites. If you want a well made fan film, check out Batman Dead End.
Wowwwwwww, scrolling through comments, and are people missing this is a fan trailer? Such hate is actually a little disturbing…
Yep. It’s Wonder Woman meets old episodes of Fastlane. Pretty fresh.
Also, “cronies” is a more apt description of those who are critiquing posters who have the gall to not be impressed by this middling trailer.
This looks so exciting. I can’t wait to have this film released. Time for a woman super hero to take on the guys.
Please –this guy directing or no– let’s not turn Wonder Woman into a generic, butch, action star. She is a woman and she is from Paradise Island. She’s not a cage fighter from Cleveland.
I prefer the GRAYSON fan film from years ago that would have been a huge feat if it came out now when viral videos really take off and help people’s careers. Grayson debuted during the infancy of YouTube and internet videos. There was also that amazing BATMAN/SUPERMAN fan film from 2004, 2005 as well.
Grayson is AWESOME. I’d give anything to see that movie actually made. Superman/Batman was too. And the Wonder Woman in that trailer blew this one away.
Hell yes. Grayson would be amazing! I adore that trailer! It had better bad guys than this one too.
Student film from someone with rich parents?
Bitter middle aged man that lives a modest living? #WonderWoman2014
There are SOOOO many fan films that blow me away, I really don’t understand why Deadline would pick this one to pimp. Really wasn’t that good.
The weird thing, for a guy who has already directed action movies, the action scenes were the part that ruined it. I was very into it until the fight scenes started. Which is hilarious because I thought the action scenes were the thing that the David E Kelley pilot got right.
I just saw this video. A friend posted it. I would love to see this as a full movie! Never thought WW could be done, but this one looks very very promising! Loved the trailer.
Jaime Alexander from Thor would make a great Wonder Woman. And it seemed from Thor that she had some stunt chops or at the least believable battle presence in the fight scenes.

I do think Wonder Woman works best set in the WWII era too, like Captain America. Pretty luke warm on this fan film though. Great fan film, but tough to categorize this director with the big boys needed for any sort of big studio budget that Wonder Woman would deserve. At least 30-50 Million to make it even worthwhile.
This is awesome! I love how they took it back the comics/first season of series!!!! Get it!
I love the setting. I love the shots! As a woman this gives me inspiration. I have a feeling the full-length would be amazing!
Cheeesy.
Um. Beyond awful. Bawful.
I”m stealing that!
It’s unfortunate how bad this is given how hard they clearly tried. Valid attempt.
Kailey, you should have protected your client and not leaked this.
Me ‘leaking’ something doesn’t mean it’s going to get picked up by a zillion sites and then Deadline. The fan response has been overwhelming in a great way internationally. I put it out there like I would any other clients material. I love it, you don’t? …who cares, not for everyone. The intention was finding a fun way to do a style reel, and he succeeded. This is not supposed to be a ‘take on the new Wonder Woman’.
Become my boss, and you can tell me how to do my job, but until then you’re posting on Deadline about my client…anonymously no less…
x
I didn’t care for the reel but I enjoyed this post. haha
Be nice to Kailey. She’s a young manager that’s still learning the business and developing her own taste. It takes a while to do that, and this is her first client on deadline. Who cares if people like it or not, you can’t please everyone. This wasn’t a home run and won’t get Jesse an agent, but it wasn’t a total train wreck either. Plus, managers at small shops need to build from the ground up.
Peter Stormare as an oily Nazi. No acting required.
Show me anywhere is the 72 year history of Wonder Woman where she used a GUN!
awful.
Overall it was just okay. Not horrible. But not standout. Oddly, the fact that a stunt guy did it is baffling because the little mini-fight sequences are the worst parts of it both from a technical and entertainment viewpoint.
Didn’t expect to like it, but I was actually blown away! Also, I like that it’s a trailer opposed to a short.
Go Jesse, CONGRATS on shooting something that shows your skills, and is badass!
It was looking good in the beginning until Wonder Woman appears. I was hoping to be blown away. Get this crap off Deadline! It reminds me of an exercise we did in film school.
You must have been the best student ever…also, post some films, and let’s hear everyone’s response
Just loved it – it is a fan film people, not a studio release.
And, yes it did take the character away from the 1980′s TV show.
Which is why I liked it!
This trailer is doing what the studios are not, and it clearly has a few of you concerned.
I’d like to see this, I would pay to see this!
Take your CW version and smoke it.
The hatred for this is disgusting. I challenge anyone who didn’t like this or appreciate it for what it is to make a better two minute trailer for any genre. I don’t think any of you could do a film half as good as this is.
How dumb. By this logic only directors can have opinions on movies? The rest of us just have to like everything no matter what it is because we haven’t made anything better. lololol
I can’t build a car either, but I know when one sucks.
Low budget generic versions of Wachowski/Snyder/McG tricks from a million years ago. Owning a 5D and shaking it around with no storytelling purpose does not warrant a movie deal.
This is what happens when everyone has the same sorta-professional tools.
Jesse : I want to do a trailer of something AWESOME that can prove I can do AWESOME studio work work. Something with fight scenes and heavy, gun-wielding action.
Kailey : COMIC BOOK! OmG! Pick a COMIC BOOK! Look at Dirty Laundry from Shankar! That went VIRAL. We can do THE SAME!
:0
Jesse : I don’t know. What comic character can Stone Cold play? Professor X? Taken. Hitman maybe? Wait. That’s a video game character.
Kailey : Hmmmmmm.
Think of someone who HASN’T HAD A MOVIE YET.
Jesse : Deadpool?
Kailey : Hmmmmm.
Not in development!!! OMG! WONDER WOMAN!
Jesse : But Stone Cold can’t be Wonder Woman.
Kailey : OMG! This will be AWESOME! Using a well-known COMIC character will make sure it leaks across all 5,000 comic book websites. Fanboys will love it!
This is epic. I love it! We need a kick ass Wonder Woman like this. She was a lot less cheesy than David E. Kelley’s version.
The fight choreography was great too. And the production value looked really high for $3500!
I saw this awesome mini action hero vid produced by Jay Firestone (creator of Lost Girl) where his 12 yr old son kicks ass beating up bad guys. The fighting is pretty epic!
