BREAKING: Well that didn’t take long. Days after Deadline broke the story that Mean Girls hemer Mark Waters would direct his Heathers writer brother Daniel Waters’ script adaptation of a new film franchise based on the six-volume Richelle Mead young adult novel series Vampire Academy: Blood Sisters, The Weinstein Company has sewn up a domestic rights deal at Berlin. Zoey Deutch (Beautiful Creatures) and Australian newcomer Lucy Fry will play the title characters, and Russian star Danila Kozlovski will play the male lead. Here’s the official announcement, but click on the link from Deadline’s original break to really get a feel for the subject matter. Rights are being sold by IM Global, which is financing with Reliance Entertainment.
Berlin – February 10, 2013 – The Weinstein Company (TWC) has acquired the U.S. Distribution rights to BLOOD SISTERS, the first feature film installment of the highly successful VAMPIRE ACADEMY series of young adult books from financiers Reliance Entertainment and IM Global.
BLOOD SISTERS, to be directed by Mark Waters (“Mean Girls”, “Spiderwick Chronicles”), is based on the first book in author Richelle Mead’s hugely successful series of books, with the screenplay written by Dan Waters (“Batman Returns”, “Heathers”). The VAMPIRE ACADEMY book series is a worldwide phenomenon, with over 8 million copies in print across 35 countries. To date there are 6 books in the series, with the last 4 on the NY Times Best Sellers list.
The deal was negotiated over the past few days at the Berlin Film Festival by TWC Co-Chairman Harvey Weinstein, COO David Glasser and Acquisitions President, Mark Gooder with IM Global CEO Stuart Ford and attorney Craig Emmanuel of Loeb and Loeb.
BLOOD SISTERS will be produced by Don Murphy and Susan Montford (“Transformers, “Real Steel”) of Angry Films, Michael Preger (“Day of the Triffids”) and Deepak Nayar of Kintop/Reliance (“Walking With Dinosaurs”, “Bend It Like Beckham”). IM Global CEO Stuart Ford will executive produce.
The Kintop Reliance partnership/IM Global film will go into production in early summer and last week announced Zooey Deutch, Lucy Fry and Danila Kozlovsky as principal cast.
The mini-major will release the film on a nationwide level on February 14, 2014, a date that combines both Valentine’s Day and the Presidents Day long weekend.
The picture represents Academy Awards guru Weinstein’s first foray into the world of young adult franchises. The company is currently riding high at the box office with Oscar contenders “Django Unchained” and “Silver Linings Playbook”.
“I am thrilled to be working on the first feature for VAMPIRE ACADEMY. This series is fantastic and I am excited to bring it to the screen for diehard fans and introduce the stories to a whole new audience,” said TWC Co-Chairman Harvey Weinstein.
Said producer Don Murphy, “The addition of Harvey and the TWC distribution and marketing team gives us the opportunity to present this wonderful franchise to the world in a bold, unique fashion and only adds to VAMPIRE ACADEMY’s considerable momentum.”
In BLOOD SISTERS Rose Hathaway develops a mental and spiritual bond with her BVFF (best vampire friend forever) Princess Lissa. The two girls attend a strict school for vampires designed to retain their humanity where it is Rose’s task to protect the Princess. Among the everyday issues faced by teenage vampires Rose falls for Dimitri, their dreamy guardian, and together the three battle the mysterious forces of the evil Moroi who are set on destroying the Princess’s bloodline.

Ordinary girl who finds out she’s extraordinary? Check.
Hobknobs with royal folk? Check.
Has “dreamy” guardian/male figure? Check.
Love triangle, where she is the object of the obsessions of two or more men? Check.
Evil dudes set on destroying them simply because? Check.
Nice to see that Twilight has given rise to so much originality. A new golden age of cinema now awaits.
You haven’t read the books, have you?
She’s not an ordinary girl who finds out shes extraordinary. She’s a Dhampir and was raised as such. Dhampirs are trained as the guardians of the moroi. Rose is a guardian too. They misspoke in the article Dimitri isn’t her guardian. He is Princess Lissa’s. And what does Twilight have to do with Guardian folk. And it’s not just about the romance. In fact. That’s not even the main point of the book like Twilight is. It’s about her training to be a guardian to her best friend Princess Lissa who is the last of her bloodline. And the strange bond they share.
Rose is no ordinary girl to begin with. She is dhampir, a mix breed between human and vampire. And nothing like Bella from Twilight. She fights her own battles. This story trumps Twilight. If you gave it a read before judging I’m sure you’d agree.
Also the evil vampire, Strigoi, are set on killing the princess for a reason. You just have to read it to see for yourself since I don’t like to spoil things.
I could keep pointing out how you’re wrong about this but I’d rather just be excited about the movie finally being produced.
Excuse me, but have you read the series? I read the first book when it was brand new, I hadn’t even heard of Twilight back then. Just because her books are about vampires and were adapted in a movie, doesn’t mean that all other vampire book-to-movie romances will be the same. Mead’s characters are unique, and wonderful. Her writing style is, in my opinion, flawless. I was skeptical to even buy the book at first, but when I opened the book and read the first line, I was hooked. Have been for 6 years. Mean created a truly unique world, I feel myself escaping to St. Vladamir’s every time I pick up one of the novels. If you’re going to knock a series, fine. Go ahead. But atleast only do that when you’ve read the book and know what you’re talking about. “Don’t judge a book by it’s cover.”
Someone clearly hasn’t read the book.
Wow. It is absolutely nothing like Twilight. I hate Twilight. I don’t even like vampires. These aren’t the vampires that are so common across popular culture today. And Rose Hathaway is NOTHING like Bella. She could kick her ass in two seconds. The author Richelle Mead has incredible story-telling ability, unlike whatever her name is that wrote Twilight. Rose was never ordinary. She hates the royal world, as does her royal friend. Her male lead isn’t just some good looking fellow she falls for; he’s strong, he’s wise and they both have reasons for falling for each other, it’s about more than them wanting to bone each other, it’s about sharing common values and having similar beliefs about right and wrong. There’s actual motivation behind every action within the story, unlike Twilight. Twilight is about a bunch of mopey people living life at their leisure with no consequences or goals, hating everything about it, but doing nothing. Vampire Academy is about the struggle that life brings. Between power, right and wrong, responsibility, love, and life and death. I get that your tired of the vampire genre but please never compare this series with that piece of crap Twilight when you clearly know nothing about it.
Take what you want from reading one article. Don’t bother trying to open your mind as it’s already made up. I just find it funny that you take what you want out of it and automatically choose to be negative. If you were to give it half a chance you could actually *gasp* like it.
Your comments also go to show that you obviously haven’t read the books, as the only similarities between VA and Twilight is the presence of vampires.
There is no love triangle.
She is not an ordinary girl who discovers that has powers.
The “evil dudes” have clearly explained reasons why they do what they do.
The male figure is a badass, not a dreamy wallflower.
This has nothing to do with Twilight, in fact I would call it the antiTwilight.
These books are really well written and have a strong female main character. That’s something sadly I haven’t still watched in any YA adaptation.
So don’t be so quick to prejudge.
I would like the people who are nerd-raging over one comment to realize something. This is the EXACT type of blind compulsion that gave the “Twi-tards” such a bad name.
Nowhere does anyone actually refute me, they just say the equivalent of “It’s better than that!” Given how angry and irrational your replies are I’m well justified in never wanting to touch this derivative crap. And it is derivative. The boarding-school-romance-cum-love-epic is moldy, rotted garbage. Yet here’s more that nobody asked for.
Rather than going full-retard on anyone who doesn’t immediately bow to the total brilliance of your pet-literature why not instead win people over rather than nerd-raging on them.
Or would that require more imagination than your precious series has taught you?
Ordinary girl who finds out she’s extraordinary? Shs’n not ordinary, she trains hard.
Hobknobs with royal folk? her bff is princess among 12 ruling houses.
Has “dreamy” guardian/male figure? Check, Dimka works hard for it.
Love triangle, where she is the object of the obsessions of two or more men? it may have a love triangle but… is beacuse Adrian can be so… And is because Rose is worth it.. if I were a mas I’d want a girl like her ;P
Evil dudes set on destroying them simply because? they wanna rule, and they wanna drestoy every single moroi and dhampir and human.
Nice to see that Twilight has given rise to so much originality. A new golden age of cinema now awaits. VA is nothing like Twilight.. read the 6 books first
I am so glad Richelle Mead gets to see her story on the bigscreen and with such a great crew! I’m in love with the cast I think they’re going to do amazing. I’m also really impressed there is a release date. Very very cool thanks guys! I am so excited about this. I am not a Twilight fan I hate how weak Bella is I think it teaches young girls it’s okay to be obsessed with a man and do anything to be with him, when really a young girl’s world should revolve around her life not some stupid boy. Richelle teaches young girls that its okay to fall inlove but you still have to worry about your own life.
probably crap, but it will do well
You shouldn’t prejudge, the books are really good, fun and all kind of awesome. It’s not like most crap that is being made into movies and tv series lately.
It’s sad to see how much harm some movies have done to real good books that actually deserve to be made into a movie.
Tehehe. It’s evil Strigoi bent on destroying her bloodline. Moroi are the good guys. They live and grow old and stuff, just longer than humans, and they can go out in the sun for a little bit, but it makes them weak and sick if they’re in the sun too long, and they eat real food, as well as blood. But they never kill, if they kill while feeding then they turn strigoi. Also if a Strigoi changes them. They have magic, but because of their culture they don’t really use it a lot. There are four powers, water, fire, earth, and air. Or only four that are known. Lissa has the power of Spirit, which hardly any one knows what it is. Everyone thinks that she just didn’t specialize. The strigoi on the other hand don’t have any magic at all, because by giving up their life, either willing or by force, they’re cutting themselves off from what little humanity they have to be immortal and powerful. Oh yeah, they’re immortal and super strong, and super fast, but not like magical fast, you could out run them if you’re a good runner. They can’t go out in the sun or they’ll burn up. When they feed they kill. They have pale skin, and red rings around their eyes. And they loose their former self in the change. They are bloodthirsty and they want to take down the Royal Moroi bloodlines one by one.
Except it’s not the Strigoi in the first book that are the main villains, tehehe.
Don’t be hatin’, JaySmack. You wish this was happening for you. In the end, if there’s a market, fill the need.
I literally want to roll over in my grave everytime someone mentions twilight comparitivly. BEFORE TWILIGHT, VAMPIRES WERE COOL. And Rose, is a badass who doesn’t need a man to take care of her, she needs a worthy equal. These books were fantastic, I hope the actors will do it justice!
I agree. If only VA came out before Twilight. The idea of vampire movies would be totally different.
I have to say that this is the best thing that Harvey Weinstein ever did and that is saying something. I hear that Warners wanted to do this as did two other studios and three other indies including Relativity. Not sure how Harvey got it but the reality is this will be his biggest moneymaking franchise of his career. Bestselling books that are brilliant. Check. Producers like Susan and Don who know how to get things done right. Check. Director of Mean Girls. Writer of Heathers. Guy who discovered Keira Knightley. Check Check Check. And since when is Day of the Triffids happen- that’s an awesome book. I really think this is an amazing development.
Lmao. You obviously have not read the book. Read them before you go off assuming what it’s about. NOTHING LIKE TWILIGHT. Smh.
Do not compare Vampire Academy to Twilight. Seriously, Twilight’s not even in the same league VA is a whole new other level of world and character building.
First of all, Rose is a thousand times better than Bella could ever even hope to be.
Dimitri sees himself as an equal to Rose, so there’s no dominant guy/macho/protective crap going on *Thank God!*
And the storyline is just uniquely amazing. And so is Mead’s writing.
Like someone else mentioned above….do not judge a book by its cover. Or by it’s genre for that matter. It might end up surprising you
I love how ignorant this comment is. It blows my mind how many people idolize Twilight enough to leave comments like this. Have you never seen a GOOD vampire movie?
Plus, it’s pretty much the complete opposite of what you’re thinking. Read the books. Then come back and try to compare it to twilight. It’ll be impossible.
There was just a few things wrong with the description about the first book. First of all Rose doesn’t develop the bond with Lissa in the first book, she develops it prior to the book about 2 years before, so she already has it in the first book. And Dimitri is only Lissa’s guardian, Rose is a novice guardian.
Big blow for Bob.
Lol i find it so awkward when people compare this to twilight, especially because half the things you “checked” arent really in the books, which you clearly havent read. The evil people dont try to kill them simply because, they try to kill them because they are evil and the main characters are there food source :s
Richelle went to a writer’s conference in 2004 and was trying to sell her sci-fi novel when she heard someone talking about paranormal chick-lit. She was student teaching at the same time, commuting and listening to Interview with the Vampire … you can guess the rest.
Gosh darnit, i wanted ben barnes too play dimitri
Awesome! So glad to see it moving forward! And read the book(s) before you speak, you’ll find you’ll like it. Its derived from a cultured folk lore, not sparkling pity parties.
“Nice to see that Twilight has given rise to so much originality.”
You obviously have NO idea what you’re talking about. First of all,
Vampire Academy was released August 16, 2007.
Twilight was published November 1, 2008…AFTER Vampire Academy.
Second, Vampire Academy is NOTHING like Twilight. Maybe you should read them before saying that.
Honestly, you should refrain from commenting on things you know absolutely nothing about. You end up looking pretty stupid.
From the announcement, I take it that Harvey is taking this under his wing as opposed to Bob, who normally handles the genre stuff through Dimension. Interesting to see how this pans out…
If anyone can make this work, Daniel Waters will…one of the nicest guys around and one of the hardest working writers in the industry who goes out of his way to help people out. Class act.
I’m very excited for the movie! Thanks to all who are making it happen!
Wow… to all the VA zealots… you do realize that adult fantasy books exist right? I understand execs believe they became ‘creative’ from spending years picking up dry cleaning and rolling calls but there are other fantasy books that are not young adult. Of course you might need an education or some sense of taste to grasp that concept. Dhampirs, morai, STtigiliosgafga, jesus, I hope your costumes are ready for ComicCon this year.
Ha. Haha. I love when people don’t know the facts. Vampire Academy is a million times better than Twilight ever will be. The vampires in it actually stay at least somewhat true to their lore. Meanwhile Twilight’s vampires were sparkly “vegetarians”, Twilight utterly destroyed the name of vampires. Vampire Academy is here to restore the name of vampires, proving that vampires can be bad-ass and evil. The funny thing is, Vampire Academy came out before Twilight did. Another funny thing, Robert Pattinson HATES Twilight, only did it for the money. Kristen Stewart doesn’t like it either. Twihards need to read better literature. The reason Rose has so many guys after her is because she’s hot, she’s exotic. She’s got curves, and she’s bad-ass. Unlike little wimpy Bella, who’s just a new and extremely boring girl.
It is exactly like Twilight. Regurgitated Ann Rice with chunks of bad romance novels in it.
Harvey has had more luck with Bob- style movies than Bob has had with Harvey-style movies.
Face it: YA book + Vampires = Twilight.
