EXCLUSIVE: Warm Bodies helmer Jonathan Levine has learned that zombies aren’t the only things that rise from the dead. His 2006 directorial debut, All The Boys Love Mandy Lane, is finally getting a North American release through Radius-TWC, whose co-presidents Tom Quinn and Jason Janego just closed the rights deal and plans a late-summer multi-platform launch. Even though the $600,000 budget film was a sensation in its 2006 Toronto Film Festival debut, sparking an all-night auction that ended with The Weinstein Company besting two suitors by bidding $3.5 million and committing to 800 screens, Mandy Lane was never released theatrically in the U.S.
The film stars Amber Heard and Anson Mount, and is about a group of high-schoolers who invite Mandy Lane, “a good girl” who becomes the object of everyone’s affection after returning from summer break, to a weekend party on a secluded ranch. While the festivities rage on, the number of revelers begins to mysteriously drop one at a time. Radius co-president Quinn tells me he saw the film while he worked in acquisitions at Magnolia, and he never forgot it. What happened? The film got caught in that no man’s land between direct-to-video and wide release. After a disastrous test screening, TWC wavered on whether Mandy Lane could thrive in wide release. So after an appeal by the film’s producers, TWC sold Mandy Lane a year later to Senator Entertainment US, an upstart division of the German-backed film company which planned to make Mandy Lane its first big theatrical release. The company went bust before Mandy Lane reached theaters.
Even though all Mandy Lane’s festival momentum was lost, Quinn continued to track the film over the years. Once he and Janego started TWC’s multi-platform division, Quinn was able to work with executive producer Keith Calder to collar the rights.
“It is one of my favorite horror films I’ve seen in the last decade, and if I could have afforded it at Magnolia, I would have bought it then,” Quinn told me. “We were finally able to untangle the film’s rights at a time when a multi-platform release makes perfect sense for a film like this. Jonathan’s film Warm Bodies has grossed over $60 million, and to me this movie surpasses what is available to us on the open market.”
It will certainly be tricky to take a 7-year old film and pump up excitement, but Quinn said the thriller is good enough to be embraced by a genre audience. It will be released theatrically at least in the top 50 markets and simultaneously be released on VOD.
In a statement, Harvey and Bob Weinstein said they were glad the film was finally getting its due. “We’ve always loved Mandy Lane,” they said in a statement. “Radius shares our passion for the film and will get in front of the widest possible audience.”
As for Levine (who also helmed 50/50), he said: “I am thrilled that Mandy Lane has been rescued and is back where it belongs with Harvey and Bob. Hard to believe it’s been seven years, but then again I’ve always perceived myself as a misunderstood artist who was light years ahead of his time, so I am thrilled the world has finally caught up. Seriously, I am incredibly proud of the film and of the hard work that my cast and collaborators put into it, and I am so happy the world will finally get a chance to see it.”
Here is an original trailer for the film when it was released in the UK, years ago:

This is fantastic news. This is a really sweet horror film that deserves to be seen on the big screen.
Are you kidding?
Dated then and dated now.
Having already seen this mess of a movie, I suggest to anyone else: don’t waste your time.
Too bad everyone’s already seen it.
Agreed. Just asked my teenage son to look it up online, and he said it’s all over the place. Seeing how his age group, and slightly older, is the target audience for this film, anyone that really wants to see it most likely already has.
Saw this at SXSW years ago and really enjoyed it, and then was stunned by the weird awful luck in the road to distribution. Good on all involved that it will finally get its day n the marketplace.
’bout freakin’ time! one of the greatest horror films of the decade!
Jacob Forman, who penned the film, is a brilliant writer. Watch out
for this unique talent in the future.
“In the future”?? This movie happen SEVEN years ago!! What’s he done since?
this looks SO dumb. What makes it any better than your standard slash-em-up in which all the slutty girls die except the virginal ‘last girl’. Talk about whore-madonna complex.
Pretty much.
this last comment couldn’t be more wrong
let me guess – SHE’S the killer. wow.
Oooh, somebody looked up the spoilers and decided to spoil it just to exert how cool, unfazed and jaded they are — how original.
that’s ACTUALLY the ending? hahahahahahah love how I guess that in 5 seconds just by watching half of the trailer. and this is why it’s dumb.
No one had to look it up. From the comments made by the PR team, it’s pretty clear what the twist was. Maybe that was original and shocking 7 years ago, but by now it’s as cliche` and unoriginal as it gets.
This movie is G-d awful. Typical recycled crap – kids go on weekend – kids die. Amazing how low the measuring stick for “great horror” has dropped.
Loved this movie. I’m glad it’s finally being released. A little bummed it couldn’t see a wide release though but is instead going to be a VOD/theatrical release. They could have advertised it as being from the director of “Warm Bodies.” I have probably seen it 5 times. I bought the UK Blu-ray. But if this played at my theater I’d go support it for sure. I am pretty sure I’ll be upgrading my Blu-ray when it’s out in the US too since I think the picture quality of the UK one is way too grainy. This is a great looking movie that deserves a better transfer. I sure hope that’s not the one they use for the US Blu.
But yeah, at least it’s finally being released here.
Loved her in Rum Diary…and her lifestyle.
Well I’m a boy and I don’t love Mandy Lane. She would never fit in with my crowd not even as a slutty cheerleader who has a big crush on me.
Its about time!! Cant wait to watch it on the big screen. The cast and crew deserves this so much
Movie rocks. Can’t wait to see it again.
Levine seriously. Hopefully you were misquoted. You’re not Kubrick. Be humble dude.
It’s called a joke.
“Mandy Lane” is a pretty good take on the slasher genre. Unfortunately, as with just about anything in the horror space, it’ll get overhyped as the second coming by some only to have the people who subsequently see it be all like, “SUCKS!”
Great flick from talented filmmakers. Will be great to see it again on the big screen!
It’s pretty clear he was being sarcastic. Don’t be a douche.
Wow. Seven years. It’s been such a long and winding road I suppose. It could still work out. Not really a fan of the genre but I enjoyed watching this film. Pretty hilarious. Definitely loved the cinematography though. Yes, all the boys love Mandy Lane, but apparently Lane seems to have immunity against such boyish charms…eh?
The cinematography was gorgeous! One tweak to the ending would have made the film even better, but it’s still stylish and fun, and Amber Heard is beautiful. Not at all difficult to see why everyone would want her. I’m gay and even I’d be charmed by her beauty. Not enough to sleep with her, but I’d wish I wanted to. LOL. She was the perfect choice to play Mandy Lane.
Anyway, don’t know why everyone has to be total douches and spoil the film for people who haven’t seen it.
Love this movie and congrats to all those involved. What interests me is the mention that a test screening was disastrous? It’s not arty or that ambiguous. Its not that smart, is accessible and entertaining. What was the great unwashed dislike? As an industry employ that make such decisions this freaks me out.
The spoiler is in the title. A friend of mine worked on the film- he called me and said, “I’m sending you a script for a mysterious murderer kind of story”, I saw the title and said,”let me guess, the killer is Mandy Lane”. They tell you in the title, who else could it be?
I love this quote by critic Erik Childress:
“May have an indie budget but equally evokes the rich landscapes of early Terrence Malick and the grimy grindhouse tales of the ’70s, converging poetically into its heartmashing climax.”
Some of my favorite cinematography stems from films with budgets of under 1 Million. This and the coming-of-age gem Mean Creek come to mind. You don’t need a big budget to make quality films. Or at least ones that look great.
I don’t want to see this film get over-hyped only to have people disappointed. It’s not a masterpiece. But it’s very enjoyable and very well-made, and worth seeing for fans of the genre.
I saw this is on youtube a year and a half ago. It was okay, probably one of Amber Heard’s better performances and much better than that other horror film she did with John Carpenter. I was originally interested in watching it because someone told me that Scream 4 copied the ending for this movie but they aren’t really the same.
I can understand people not liking a movie for whatever reason, but coming on here and spoiling it for people like myself who aren’t familiar with it shows a real lack of respect not only for others, but for yourself.
Anyone who is into Anson Mount found a way to get their hands on this movie to view it. Thrillers aren’t my favorite genre, nevertheless, it was entertaining. Enjoyed the setting for the film.
U guys r tooo critical. Well u had a chance 2 comment & now I will w-5 words. Anson and Amber – too HOT!
