EXCLUSIVE: I didn’t see this one coming. After directing one of the most talked-about films at Sundance Ain’t Them Bodies Saints, David Lowery has hired on with writing partner Toby Halbrooks to script Pete’s Dragon for Disney and producer Jim Whitaker. I’m told they will reinvent the core story of a venerable Disney family film. It will not be a musical and at this point Lowery is just engaged as writer. The original 1977 Pete’s Dragon mixed an animated fire-breather with a live-action cast of actors that included Mickey Rooney, Red Buttons, Shelley Winters, Helen Reddy and Jim Dale, with Sean Marshall playing the orphan boy who comes to a town with his magical dragon, his abusive adoptive parents in hot pursuit.
It is certainly a departure for Lowery, who made the jump from editor to director on Saints, a gritty drama he wrote and directed that stars Rooney Mara, Rami Malek, Casey Affleck and Ben Foster. It’s the tale of an outlaw who escapes prison and sets across the Texas hills to reunite with his wife and the daughter he has never met. The film was acquired by IFC, which will release the pic August 16. He made a small feature called St. Nick, about runaway children who have to fend for themselves in the wild, so he has explored themes of innocence and magical realism. And he and Halbrooks made the Sundance short Pioneer, which was essentially an epic bedtime story.
Lowery’s repped by WME.

OMFG PETE’S DRAGON is one of my favorite childhood films I grew up on. I haven’t seen it in years and don’t know if it holds up, but have fond memories of watching it over and over again as a kid. I can’t believe they’re going to remake it, probably into a CGI fest.
It sadly does NOT hold up.
Parts of it are simply atrocious.
Is there a need for a remake/re-imagining of Pete’s Dragon? I would think not.
Kinda sounds cool to me. Live action movie with a boy and a dragon? The kid in me is there.
Awesome! Love the crew at Whitaker Entertainment!
Pete’s Dragon sucks. The film is terrible and the music, ugh forgettable.
It is amazing.
badass!
another -reboot” “re-tool” Re:why bother? Who needs it?
An Original idea would probably cause heart failure in some of the hacks and bean counters running the Studio these days. Genuine creativity is a risk. It always will be. Too much risk I guess for some of these flunkies and no talent money grubbers.
NO NO NO NO NO NO – STOP – I love Pete’s Dragon, it was my #1 favorite film when I was a child. When I was a kid . . . . . .can this possibly be a mistake or a misprint? This movie is perfection, great songs, great dragon, why does everything need to be remade? This is bulls-t.
I feel sick.
I AGREE!!!!!!!!
Maybe this time they could use animation to bring it to life.
“GADZOOKS!!!”
-Doc Terminus
“Pepe’s Dragon”
A CG Helen Reddy, maybe?
I wonder if there’s any correlation between people who loved PETE’S DRAGON as a child and serial killers.
Hey, I don’t get your point. I loved Pete’s Dragon as a child and I’ve only killed maybe 4 or 5… ooh…I see what you did there. Sneaky.
interesting…
I have not seen his films but I think the film should be directed by Kathleen Bigalow.
Yeah, let Elliot (the dragon) waterboard Pete for information.
PLEASE TELL ME they are getting rid of all that boring singing and tons of nothing happening… more singing… Hated it as a young kid!!! Hated it as a older child.. and teen.. and adult. So boring.
Nobody forced you to watch it again & again. The movie was very good. I enjoyed as a child. The Song “Candle on the Water” was even Nominated for “An Academy Award”. The film has a loyal following.
Hear Hear! Disney does not have a good track record with remakes. Freaky Friday? The Parent Trap? Lightening doesn’t strike twice.
Who’s gonna do the voice of Elliott? Carlos Mencia?
Bad enough that they remade Escape From Witch Mountain (with the Rock!) and ruined that childhood classic. (Let’s not mention Flubber, 101/102 Dalmations/Spielberg’s Hook). For quality entertainment, stick with the Disney originals and try original screenplay ideas.
I THINK PETE DRAGON CUTE MOVIE THAT DISNEY EVER MADE.
Sounds fun
“Pete’s Dragon” was one of the worst mistakes of the 1970′s Disney regime. Horrific music by the awful team behind the theme song from “The Poseidon Adventure,” a terrible leading lady (the ever-wooden Helen Reddy who could NOT act to save her life), an awful juvenile lead (who never made another film) and an over-acting Shelley Winters (but I repeat myself).
The only good things about the film were the set pieces, Jim Dale in one of his few film roles (the man deserved better in film, he is amazingly gifted), and the animated dragon by Ken Anderson–who was originally supposed to have marginal screen time until people realized that the film was about the DRAGON and not Pete.
The potential for a great film was always there, and if they do it right, it would run circles around the original, which doesn’t hold up. Tried to watch it with my children–who love vintage Disney, including the old 1930′s cartoons, Silly Symphonies, and the original “Herbie” films–and they got bored right away.
This film is the epitome of what was wrong during the Ron Miller years.
This movie is the best. So smart.
I’d rather see a Mary Poppins remake. By which I mean an actual movie version that bears some resemblance to PL Travers’ books.
IT WILL BE A BIG MISTAKE TO REMAKE ONE OF THE MOST BRILLIANT MOVIES IN DISNEY HISTORY!!!!!!!!!!! DO NOT CHANGE THE SCRIPT! YOU WILL BE KILLING OFF THE MAGICAL DREAM THAT IT PRESENTS!!!!!!!!!!!!
THIS MOVIE IS A CLASSIC!!!!!
