The third season of the FX anthology hit American Horror Story will be about witches and be titled American Horror Story: Coven. The revelation came tonight during a panel in Beverly Hills that closed out the PaleyFest 2013 festival. Of the forthcoming season, co-creator and exec producer Ryan Murphy said, “It’s a really cool story we’ve been talking about for a couple of years, and this seemed the year to do it.” He also disclosed that AHS will be shooting in multiple locations for Season 3 when it resumes production this summer, including New Orleans, after having been anchored to the soundstage during its first two seasons. “We have another couple of doozy locales planned,” Murphy said of scouting out haunted places in which to film for Season 3. He also hinted he may be getting over his aversion to producing a vampire show, and that along those lines he’s had preliminary conversations with FX Networks chief John Landgraf about “a companion piece” to American Horror Story that could conceivably be vampire-based. “It would be really cool to do a couple of different incarnations of the (American Horror Story) idea,” Murphy added, “but I can’t talk too much about it.” The show’s second season, American Horror Story: Asylum, was a formidable demo force in the Wednesday 10 PM time period for FX. It wrapped on January 23.

The inking of Oscar winner Kathy Bates — who recently underwent a double mastectomy as she battles cancer — for Horror Story‘s 13-episode third season was leaked late last month. And the latest cast regular was introduced as a surprise guest toward the conclusion of tonight’s lively discussion. Entering to a standing
ovation, Bates will be portraying the former best friend-turned-enemy of Jessica Lange’s character. Murphy, reminding everyone, “You know I love a good Oscar winner,” admitted that he “always wanted to see a lot of scenes with Kathy Bates and Jessica Lange going at it, so that’s what you’ll see.” An ebullient Bates said that she’s loved the series “from the very beginning” and during a meeting with Lange had implored her to lobby Murphy on her behalf. “I said, ‘Tell him I’ll do anything’,” Bates, who won her Oscar for Misery, recalled. “Then little did I know it would all come about. It’s a miracle.” Murphy offered that it wasn’t a tough sell, having “loved Kathy Bates from the first time I saw her on stage… I pitched her this cuckoo-for-Cocoa-Puffs character and said, ‘Call me or email me.’ An hour later my phone rang and she said, ‘I’m in’.” Lange’s character for the third season was described tonight as “a glamour cat,” which seemed to be news even to Lange. “I don’t know what a glamour cat is,” she said, “but I’m excited.” That’s as far as anyone would go in sharing details about what lay ahead for American Horror Story’s third campaign, scheduled to hit the air next fall. Besides Murphy, Lange and Bates, the panel also included exec producers Brad Falchuk, Dante Di Loreto and Tim Minear along with returning Season 3 cast members Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Lily Rabe, Frances Conroy, and Naomi Grossman from Season 2wo, still unsigned for Season 3.

Meh. I couldn’t finish one…
Meh, you’re a moron…
Meh you’re an asshole who can’t get over the fact someone has a differing opinion. I think there’ll be a position for you soon as mayor of NYC.
I LUV it….great post!I needed a laugh after reading the ANGRY
“Critic” wannabe below. Funny, I bet these morons googled American Horror JUST to put a damper on anyone’s enjoyment. Sounds as if “Asylum” May have hit a nerve with the guy…????
I cannot wait to see MORE AMERICAN HORROR….
THANKS FOR THE LAUGH
: )
Right? Stop the insanity. This show makes no sense to me.
really? I think American horror story season one was awesome! but it lagged a little bit season 2 , it wasn’t soo much “horror” no ghosts and nothing scary , hope season 3 will be a little bit more “horror” than crim …
Was Evan Peters completely baked at the panel or what?
What about Jessica? She didn’t remember that the Monsignor had changed Jude’s name to “Betty Drake” so people wouldn’t know she was still alive?
I was really saddened when Kathy Bates last series Harry’s Law was cancelled. Happy to see her back on a weekly basis at least for 13 weeks. AHS can make you squirm & be uncomfortable but definitely not boring that’s for sure.
Can’t wait for the next installment! It’s gonna be amazing.
Such a creative and well-done show from top to bottom.
awesome, Awesome, AWESOME!!!
This show is utter garbage. Depravity for depravity’s sake. Nothing redeeming here.
yes, ignore the award winning actors, complex character development, hauntingly beautiful cinematography, original story lines and a soundtrack that borrows from all the right horror icons and yes, simple depravity.
It’s all in the service of junk. Talented people working on junk.
Well WRTRPROD, then you should thank those super creative major networks for giving you such “non garbage” as “NCIS” and “Two Broke Girls” to doze off to each week!
NCIS and CSI is such garbadge , Theres no “followup” sence, I veiew it as braindead tv, wich doesn’t require any focus , just the same S#%t over and over again , it’s crazy that they have 20 something seasons, and great shows like heroes, 4400 the river V and a bunch more gets cancelled …
WHY do you bother commenting on it, then??? Or do you just enjoy spreading bitterness for bitterness’s sake?
Wow. Get a grip, skippy. This show has no redeeming qualities. No character to root for. Everyone is deplorable. If you enjoy growing mushrooms in a basement, then by all means watch it.
this is a horror story… it’s in the title. if you want good people and happy endings you’ve come to the wrong place.
I love good horror shows. From Night Gallery to X-files. But this show is an incoherent, throw-everything-against-the-wall-and-see-what-sticks mess. No matter how many people say it’s great.
neither night gallery nor x-files(though i like them both) were horror. at best they were thriller which is to say slightly scary drama.
Why do you hate women so much?
Ha ha, because I don’t like this show, I hate women????
I guess you watch television for political reasons only ignoring things like structure, character arcs, etc.
Sad.
Yeah, but in its own way, it’s the funniest thing on TV.
I am delighted for Kathy Bates. She’s an Oscar winner but of far more importance a brave woman whose courage and strength inspire. Kathy has presumably been taken for granted as the “heavy character actress.” It isn’t a fluke she’s earned a dozen Emmy nominations, half dozen Golden Globes, BAFTA’s, SAG’s, etc. It thrills me Kathy received a standing ovation. Misery was her “game changer” but her endless credits are some of the greatest of the past 25 years in film and TV. Fried Green Tomatoes, Primary Colors, The Late Shift, Titanic, and in that jacuzzi with Jack in About Schmidt. Still working with greats: Woody, Frears, Mendes, LaGravenese and herself. A true triple threat — one hell of a director. Susan Smith has been the driving force and unsung hero here as well.
What about Alexandra Breckenridge?!!! AKA the prettiest female in your whole entire series!
Great web site. A lot of helpful information here. I am sending it to
some buddies ans also sharing in delicious. And of course, thanks for your effort!
