It’s rare for moguls to push moral responsibility to Hollywood, let alone action. Last night at a sold-out LA Gay & Lesbian Center gala that raised $1 million for homeless gay and lesbian youth, honoree Amy Pascal asked the industry to scrutinize its depiction of LGBT characters in film and television: “How about next time, when any of us are reading a script and it says words like fag, or faggot – homo – dyke – take a pencil and just cross it out”. Below are excerpts from the Sony Pictures boss’ prepared speech.
No matter who we are, no matter what we are, no matter where we come from, we learn about ourselves and each other in two ways. The first way is what we hear – in our families, from our friends, and from our schoolmates. The second way is what we see – on television and in the movie theater. Now, there is not much any of us can do about what people hear from families and friends, but there is a whole hell of a lot we can do about what people see.
The images that impacted me as a teenager had lasting influences on my entire life and I bet that is true for most of us. What we see in the media today affects everybody, whether it’s film, TV, radio, magazines or the internet. What the media says about your sexual orientation, and the color of your skin, and the shape of your eyes, and your ethnicity… what you look like, what you weigh, what you wear, how poor you are, how awkward you are, how educated you are, and how different you are… this stuff really sinks in. What we see teaches us about how to feel about ourselves and how to feel about each other.
And now, I’m talking about kids who are gay and I’m talking about kids who aren’t gay. One group needs affirmation and the other group needs education. And, if I’m being honest, neither of those issues are high on any movie studio or TV network’s agenda…
The Celluloid Closet was made almost 20 years ago and certainly attitudes have changed, but maybe not quite so much as you or I would want or hope. Television has been much more progressive and credit has to be given to producers like Max Mutchnick and David Kohan and Ryan Murphy for really changing things.
Now movies need to catch up. There are magnificent movies being made about gay subjects with gay characters, like Brokeback Mountain and Milk. Anyone would have been proud to have made those movies. I know I would be. But when you think about some of these films, even our favorite ones, there is a theme that runs through them.
Brokeback Mountain, Milk, Boys Don’t Cry, Philadelphia, The Hours, Gods and Monsters, The Talented Mr. Ripley, A Single Man, My Own Private Idaho, Cloud Atlas – in all these movies, the main character is murdered or martyred or commits suicide or just dies unhappily. And there are far more pernicious and dangerous images that confront gay kids and their parents: the lesbian murderer, the psychotic transvestite, the queen who is humiliated and sometimes tossed off a ship or a ledge. It’s a big joke. It still happens.
How many times have you heard a character imply to another that the worst thing about going to prison isn’t being locked up for the rest of your life, it’s the homosexuality? And old stereotypes still exist. The most benign stereotypes would have a gay kid believe that they will end up being the asexual, witty best friend of the pretty girl, or a drag queen, or a swishy hairdresser. The list goes on.
Of course, there are great images, too, like the family in The Kids Are All Right. The way the boy in Perks of Being a Wallflower and the middle-aged man in Hotel Marigold and the 75-year-old man in Beginners come out to a better, richer, more fulfilled life. It’s treated as a celebration.
And real credit has to be given to the filmmakers of ParaNorman, Chris Butler and Sam Fell, who had the first gay character in an animated movie, and he was the football hunk and it was totally incidental to the plot.
Now it’s time for all of us to take that step. Not every gay character needs to be defined by his or her sexuality. Can’t being gay just be one stitch in the fabric of someone’s life? Can’t we depict men and women who just so happen to be gay – perhaps a lawyer or soldier or business executive or scientist or engineer…
We need to create an atmosphere that encourages people to speak up, so we get this right.
How about next time, when any of us are reading a script and it says words like fag, or faggot – homo – dyke – take a pencil and just cross it out. Just don’t do it.
We can do better and we will do better. We have to. If we just think about that kid in North Dakota, or their parents, we might just do it a little differently.”
CANNES: ‘Jane Got A Gun’ Moving Toward U.S Deal

No more Adam Sandler movies?
Now why would we want to eliminate gay slurs from movies? After all according to the liberals, movies have no impact on society. What about eliminating violence and immorality from the movies? No we can’t do that because good morals cannot be tolerated from the left. These people are a total bunch of hypocrites.
And what, dear Shade, do you consider “good morals?” And who says liberals don’t think that the movies have an impact on society? And who will determine what “immorality” is when it comes time to remove it from the movies? It would be fairly difficult writing a thriller, say, if no one in it did anything immoral. Frankly, I don’t like censorship of any kind, so, in that sense, I agree with you.
“And who says liberals don’t think that the movies have an impact on society? ”
Well, Quentin Tarantino, for one, had a rather long and sustained hissy fit recently when it was mildly suggested that his garbage movies might be contributing to cultural pollution.
Dude, are you new?
No, are you?
I think it’s fair to saw that gratuitous violence against other people, or murdering people, or cutting heads off people because of their religion all constitute bad morals. We can still all agree on certain things. Most of us still think the 10 commandments are the foundation of our legal system.
I love whenever DRUDGE REPORT picks up a Deadline story. The comment section gets flooded by jackasses who think Palin sipping Big Gulps at CPAC is the height of hilarity and that the bible should be interpreted verbatim.
@Rob “I love whenever DRUDGE REPORT picks up a Deadline story. The comment section gets flooded by jackasses”
Yes, since it’s always soooo much nicer when everyone agrees with you…
Rob
I notice that since it’s on Drudge that you couldn’t refrain from your totally worthless hypocritical contribution to the topic of discussion.
virtues are good morals vices are not
Agreed.
There was a time, when Hollywood made films that with positive messages, when the good guys always told the truth and did what was right. That was before the Boy Scouts were criticized for not embracing homosexuality. Now it seems films compete on the most explicit sex, along with gratuitous blood and gore. But hey, at least we can be sensitive to the feelings of homosexuals…
“Normal Guy”. Since you proudly self-identity as the epitome of average, milquetoast, benign and boring masculinity, can’t you just accept that you probably are never going to get what goes on at the movies, which are the escapist entertainment most men turn to to escape their average, milquetoast, benign and boring lives?
we need more like you Normal_Guy . Has anyone notice that after Rhode Island became the final New England state to pass gay marriage, that the area has had 4 major winter snow storms, and another coming there way this weekend. Maybe someone is not happy with this gay marriage thing?
@Arrant, You read far too much into the moniker “Normal Guy” and your comment on movies doesn’t make any more sense than your lengthy insults. Normal heterosexual masculinity might bore you but it doesn’t bore everyone. Many people find it very interesting. Even gay men find it interesting, according to the jokes on “Will and Grace”. In fact it is one of the most interesting subjects on earth tying only with heterosexual femininity for first place. There is nothing “milquetoast” about it either. Normal heterosexual masculinity tends to be dominate, aggressive and dynamic. As for it being “benign”, you got that one right, proving the blind squirrel does get a nut now and then. As for films, first you said Normal Guy would “never get what goes on at the movies” (as if it were something esoteric) and then you dismissed the genre as worthless escapism. If you meant to say something else, you need to work on your language skills.
Self righteous idiot ^^^^^^
so it’s right to bash Christians but not gays?
Jack, the point is this article tries to define what good morals are “It’s rare for moguls to push moral responsibility to Hollywood”. So the problem is that the good morals of one may not be good morals of another. The fact that that this article considers her ambitions as “good morals” to me is silly. Good morals to me is the lack of any gay/homosexual relationship, but I am sure many look to me as having no morals for saying that.
Jack, YOU are the problem! There ARE moral absolutes! The Bible (both Testaments), The Koran, and all of the other Holy Books and traditions of all the religions in the world agree on at least 8 of the Cammandments (leaving out the ones about the False gods and the holy day as being different for each sect). Those 8 are your absolutes! Those are your morals! Not killing, not stealing, not commiting adultery (yes Hollywood that’s in there!), etc.. Even principled atheists can agree with them!
Note that there’s nothing about “hurt feelings” in any of them!
“Skeptical Observer”, You jumped from the question of “good morals” to “absolutes” so I don’t that is fair to Jack’s initial point that people do have differing opinions on the subject of “good morals”. I agree that absolute morality exist but I disagree that there is any morality outside of God. Principled Atheist are borrowing from God to get their principles. They climb in God’s lap to slap His face. Without God there is no morality. Man is free. That idea doesn’t come from mean Christians out to make Atheist look bad either. Atheist’s greatest thinkers (Camus, Gide, Sartre) came up with that one not me.
I’ve read this many times; i.e. that movies, TV, or video games do not affect behaviors etc. etc. so don’t try to weasel out of it.
“Good morals”, let’s start with the “Ten Commandments” and go from there.
simply “thou shall not covet”
try that in holly wood without gary cooper, etc.
Totally agree, Buddy!
Morality is not subjective! It is “OB”jective as seeing the grass is green and your nose is in the center of your face. Whether you follow some religious dogma or deduce it from reason and rational thought, it is discernible. Right and wrong is right and wrong. A is A, to paraphrase Aristotle.
To think otherwise leads us to people like Hitler (I know, people who refer to Hitler usually are demagogues, but in this instance it fits) who killed millions and called it “moral”. Without a distinct moral code, who would anyone be to say he was wrong?
As a gay person, she does not speak on behalf of me. I do agree with her on some points but I do feel there should be less censorship not more. I know it’s hard for some of you to put yourself in the shoes of a confused LGBT teen growing up in a hostile town and home, who do not simply accept them he or she is. They are confused only because society has told them they are flawed and not equal simply because of who they love. Perhaps if you did see it from a gay child’s perspective you would see that they are a sponge and any movies or TV shows they watch have a significant impact on their state of being. If they are depressed and suicidal an irresponsible film maker’s gay joke in a movie, an insensitive comment from a forum like this one, or even bullying, which is what I experienced, can send a teen over the edge and to the point of no return. Anyways, try to be a little more responsible in these forums, as they can be viewed by millions around the world. Thanks
Art shouldn’t set out to wound, but the purpose of art is to illuminate some basic truths about life and the human condition and there is little room for coddling in that endeavor. Part of storytelling is that only trouble is interesting. To ask gay characters who live long, happy and varied lives is asking for something alien to drama. If anything as it stands movies propagandize and often the only positive characters in a movie are gay. Name one? (American Beauty and Meet the Stoners, Three Weddings and a Funeral- off the top of my head). All teenagers are as you put it “like a sponge” and what about the message being sent to heterosexual teenagers? To act as if the movie industry isn’t “sensitive” enough to gay issues is just galling.
Concerned citizen: What is truly ironic that it is the LGBT leaders who, much as so-called “black leaders” do, crow about how LGBTs are “flawed” and “unequal”. The politics of sex are following the same horrible template as the politics of race; as such becoming little more than a grab for money, power and prestige.
The fact is (IMHO) that LGBTs are simply different, no better or worse than the person down the street born with red hair, dimples or an extraordinarily high forehead. If the so-called “gay leaders” would ask the world to embrace a sense of normalcy, instead of pushing homosexuality as a “condition” – which it does by seeking civil rights status – many more people would embrace the cause. The more you seek to jam your lot in life down someones throat, the more they will fight you back.
Simple human nature.
Having said that, there will now be someone out there seeking civil rights protections for red-headed people with dimples and high foreheads. I apologize for them in advance.
Just one persons thoughts – your mileage may vary.
More special treatment for gays? Why don’t we censor the “N” word or fat jokes too?
Oh don’t forget we need to stop Irish jokes and German jokes ah the list could go on forever OR maybe remember that its comedy and perhaps loosen up a little?! Good Lord!
I remeber a time when Catholics and Jews shared a stage and told ethnic jokes about one another.
We are so damn touchy-feely we can’t joke around.
Time to toughten up your skins and laugh!
I suppose this “Mogul” would have been horrified if she was around when Blazing Saddles, or Airplane were being released. It’s called artistic expression lady, get over yourself and worry about Sony.
Totally agree. Amy still hasn’t apologized for the language in that film. Embarrassing. We can hear the N-word in Sony movies, but not gay slurs. Get it together and apologize already, Amy. In the meanwhile, don’t preach.
Stop calling those freaks gay. Call them what they are….QUEER.
Rambo Rod–anyone who gets a rod from watching Rambo really shouldn’t be calling other men queers.
Agreed. Why shouldn’t all references to “gays” be removed from all entertainment and media sources? No special mentions or references to “gay marriages”,”gay rights” etc etc.
Of course you would then you would have the “gay community ”
complaining that they were being ignored.
Well said. If movies can have an impact you don’t like, then don’t say they have no impact when they depict things that don’t bother you but that bother other people. Why should one person’s artistic preferences have more sway than anyone else’s?
I am an old woman who doesn’t watch anything but the old black and white movies because I don’t want people using the F word, screwing, puking, or going to the bathroom in my living room. Anyone who has ever had a baby knows what body parts look like and nudity doesn’t turn me on. And those old women in those short short skirts look ridiculous. They look like they still think they are cute little toddlers.
Agree with you wholeheartedly, Snow White. I live in reality and don’t want to watch it on the big screen. While I still have a thing for animation, I quit watching TV and going to the movies years ago. Loved Northern Exposure and ER until it got “with it.” I don’t particularly care who does what as long as it doesn’t cause anyone pain, but I don’t know why someone insists on shoving their sexuality in my face. If this new age of enlightenment, equality and personal freedom is so superior to the “old ways,” why is everyone so damned angry and miserable? Why are child, spousal, alcohol and drug abuse, violence and suicide so rampant?
In most Hollywood movies, a devout Christian is either a serial killer or a raging hypocrite.
The only one where that wasn’t the case recently was Les Mis, which was based on a musical based on a 150 year old novel.
Or X-Men 2, when Kurt Wagner (Nightcrawler), a devout Catholic, was played by Alan Cumming, a gay actor.
If you’re upset that movies depict devout Christians as raging hypocrites you must really, really, really hate introspection.
Um, no. That’s real life. Please understand that there is a difference.
devout can have many meanings, just like the bible can. A true christian uses Jesus’ teachings to make their own deductions about their environment. In my personal opinion, there is nothing wrong with being gay, and I can use bible verses to prove that Jesus felt the same way. I share your pain that in Hollywood christians are stereotyped as ignorant bigots and not as people with their own intelligent thoughts, and I find it sad that I have to pretend to not be christian so that people will give me a chance. If a few bad seeds determines the lot, then every group of people are scum – including homosexuals, who I know from experience are generally very good people. Why can’t we just see each other as who we are and prosecute the bad ones because they do bad things, not because they identify with something we hate?
That is a excellent comment Shade, thank you for speaking up.
I don’t think it’s fair for you to generalize liberals by saying “After all according to the liberals, movies have no impact on society.” I consider myself to be a liberal and I completely disagree with that statement. That is why I love movies so much; because they can make an impact on society. Make people think, interpret a piece of art the way they want to, etc. Movies do not tell you “This is what you should do.” Movies express the human condition. No human is perfect and there are many stories that are told expressing that. Just because there is violence, or a “slur” in a film – like Amy Pascal was expressing her opinion about, it doesn’t mean it is socially acceptable in society. It is showing more realistic interpretations of characters and their situations in stories. I understand where Amy Pascal is coming from but I disagree with her in this matter. I believe it is important to acknowledge that these words are hurtful, but they are a part of our history. They have been used for many years, and when used appropriately they should be used in a script. Movies paint a picture, whether it is a pretty one or an ugly one, it’s a picture that has meaning.
Never Mind what she’s whining about how about the fact she’s at a $ ONE MILLION DOLLAR fundarisaer for”…Homeless Homosexual Youth?!?!” Man this country has become such a bunch of spoiled brats. No wonder the rest of the world hates us. Whats next? A Boo-hoo fundraiser for Transgeder Carpal Tunnel Down- Syndrom Step Children????
Sorry but my tears are all dried out.
I stopped going to the theater or watching movies at home as the majority of them are pure crap. She should ask Hollywood to make worthwhile movies. Some of the movies produced are just embarrassing to watch.
My tears are all drained out after reading that Transgender Carpal Tunnel thing!!! Hahahahahaha!!!!
“It’s rare for moguls to push moral responsibility to Hollywood”…
Wait. What?! It’s rare for elites to push “morality”? What world does this author live in? And now it’s considered a moral position to allow any sexual “orientation”. Everything is permissible, that’s the new “morality”.
The homeless shelter for runaway teens at the LA Gay and Lesbian Center has been around for decades and provides much needed shelter and counseling for homeless teens, of which there are many in Los Angeles. Regular homeless shelters aren’t safe for most gay kids.
ITA. The L.A. Gay and Lesbian Center has been doing wonderful work for years in providing a safe and caring environment for teenagers who are gay. Those who come to the shelter are either runaways or, in some cases, have been tossed out by their own families after coming out. These youngsters, indeed, often would not be safe in standard group homes and if not for the center would most likely end up on the streets with all the physical and emotional dangers that come with that environment. God only knows how many young lives have been saved due to the work of the center and its dedicated staff. That is why it is so important for people to separate the work of the center from the personal or professional opinions of its backers.
Sony is right. We need to stop promoting violence in movies and it all starts with how we talk in movie land about gays. Maybe?
Seriously, what about the senseless gun violence? Or stereotyping of Christians or Islam? Why are business people in movies always greedy uncaring maniacs? How many movies have you seen lately without a bully that seems to have it all? Why are so many movie women made to act and dress like sluts? Why do movies glorify the gangster life style? I could make a list.
Maybe you Hollywood types might put the pencil to all the scenes that promote violence, intolerance, bullying, bigotry, and racism. Maybe as an industry movies might return to the days of lifting us up as a society by promoting what is good about us in the movies. Hollywood has forgotten how to make us feel good about what is good about us.
It is not Hollywood’s job to make the masses feel good/uplifted. I think that’s the individual’s ‘job’. People would benefit from avoiding going to the movies or watching this trash on tv. No one is forcing anyone to watch this crap. Maybe if people begin to avoid going to the theaters, these crap movies wouldn’t get made.
rock on dude
Hollywood also makes a lot of kids feel insecure. Gay or otherwise.
“Regular homeless shelters aren’t safe for most gay kids.”
I’ve have some news for you: Regular homeless shelters aren’t safe for anyone.
I was wondering if homeless ‘hetero’ teenagers would be allowed in the Gay & Lesbian Shelter. It’s too bad people can’t just take people one at a time instead of lumping them in this or that category.
As a socially awkward teen, I was deemed ‘gay’ by some classmates, even though I wasn’t. I understand some of the crap they have to put up with, but disagree about making special categories for anyone.
Unfortunately, regular homeless shelters aren’t safe for anyone, especially kids.
The only safe place for kids is a loving home. Let’s love them into our hearts and homes, regardless of their choices.
What is this, 1950? Sexual orientation not a choice.
@BillyShears… apparently you have absolutely zero information about the plight of Homeless gay youth in this country (and in LA in particular). Every night thousands of kids who have been kicked out of their home for being gay, lesbian or transgender sleep on the streets. Thank goodness there are fundraisers like this one to try and provide those young people with a safe place to sleep and to help them get off the streets. Your attempt at humor is misplaced, homophobic and really uninformed.
Good point Deaeye Dave. Courtesy and respect for others is a two-way street.
Maybe the media would stop criticizing ‘family values’, ‘morality’ (what do those terms even mean in this context? I have never seen a movie that slurred family values or morality) and christianity, if the people who tend to throw those words around weren’t usually using them to justify exclusion of other people or hate of some kind.
Sadly Benny O, very often those who loudly demand tolerance and respect for their point of view refuse to extend that courtesy to those who oppose them. They believe that their opinion is the only one that matters. I appreciate the rich irony of profound intolerance from those who claim that they have suffered the most bias.
So what about bisexuals??? I know for a fact that’s not tolerated in your precious GAL community. You’re just as racist as what you complain about. Also, if a straight person comes to your shelter, are they turned away for being straight? At least a regular shelter accepts everybody.
Please, define “homophobic”.
Something I am proud to be.
Further proof that the word homophobic has no meaning beyond “You disagree with with whatever gay activists support”. You were well into an interesting and informative point that illuminated your opponent’s lack of knowledge on the subject. Why decend into calling him/her a bigot without reason?
Pascal spoke at a charity benefit. There are 1000s of various “benefits.” What’s your problem ? Jealous that Madame is addressing issues before that particular audience and making good points? The comments herein sound mentl.
I’ll bet you’re a hoot at parties.
So in the interest of tolerance, equality and inclusion is Ms. Pascal suggesting this new policy will mean no more uneven and disparaging depictions of evangelical Christians, Roman Catholics, Mormons, Jews, Sikhs, Muslims, citizens native to the rural south or the wheat belt and all other groups which often fall prey to the media elites’ propensity for facile exploitation for cheap laughs or “thoughtful” criticism?
No chance in hell. Movies must have antagonists.
When did white people turn into the victims? Didn’t y’all complain about playing victim and whatnot for a long time?
When did white people turn into victims? February, 2009.
Funny comment, and so true. The gay community is so accepted now that they are completely protected and cosseted. Also, I have a lot of gay friends, and 9 of 10 are well-off. The idea that they are persecuted is just media hype to create and image of victimhood.
Thank you statistician Vince. I can now go on and live my life as I have been waiting for someone to tell me that 90% percent of gay men are well off. Wow you must have like 30 million gay friends to come up with that sort of statistic. Kudos! “They are completely protected” I must have read that last article I read wrong where it says a gay person can be fired from his employer in the majority of US states for simply being gay. I also must have made a mistake reading that only 9 states allow equal marriage, because after all it is just a government contract entitling you to over 1200+ benefits. I think you should start your own talk show or fox news segment. You will be very welcomed there as they pull numbers and facts out of their behinds. Thank you!
“I have a lot of gay friends” sounds a lot like “I’m not a racist, I have lots of black friends”. Well off is relative. I imagine a lot of “groups” appear well off when looking out your trailer window.
I’m sorry but “paging doctor faggot” was a funny line
Damn funny line.
The best line.
Well, there goes M.A.S.H. and Corporal Klinger.
BTW how many people have just taken the theme song title literally and committed suicide as a result? Just asking.
Great speech I was there
OK, you were there. Now, how much $$$ have/will you contribute & how much time will you dedicate to this one-in-a-million causes. Nothing, I bet.
Especially since Happy Madison makes a crapload of movies at Sony. Oddly enough, Chuck/Larry went to Universal.
I am so tired of rich elitists telling me what to say or what to watch. Take her message and apply it to herself, if you know what I mean….And I am liberal! L-A-M-E! If you take everything too seriously in life, you probably won’t live a happy life. Best to learn to laugh. And…I agree, I don’t usually find certain slurs necessary in movies, but to say it should never be in any movie, goes against the idea of art and free expression. I could go on and on….This lady is completely disconnected from reality!
I am sick and tired of the gay agenda being shoved down my throat.
What movies have you been held at gunpoint and taken too?
Gunpoint, that’s rich! I took my then young son to see an Adam Sandler movie once, only to see two men kissing on the screen. Had I know this little “love scene” was in the movie I would have taken him elsewhere, rather than having to explain this to him later. And it goes beyond homosexuality, I took him to a movie starring Nicolas Cage only to have good old Nick explain in graphic detail some obscure sexual reference to the audience. The language was so nasty in Tom Hank’s “The Ladykillers” that my wife and I walked out and demanded our money back, the theater manager said they had had complaints from patrons before over this film. This was a remake of a classic comedy and it was so awful it was hard to believe it was the same story. I suppose if you watch a Jamie Foxx stand-up comedy special you know what you are going to get, but you don’t expect some of the garbage you see in movies and you certainly don’t need to expose your wife and kids to it.
Good to see a man on here who cares about what he exposes his family to. Kuddos to you!
Why did you take your young son to see an Adam Sandler movie? Did you not see him scream ‘GO BACK TO YOUR FUCKING HOLE’ at a golf ball, or do you take selective offense?
C’mon, John Galt. Seriously? I can appreciate that some might feel uncomfortable with the language in the Coen Brothers’ “The Ladykillers.” And, I’m happy that the movie theater manager refunded your money if it wasn’t to your taste. However, I am equally convinced that as you walked off, the manager was thinking, “Dude, that was an R-rated movie – what were you expecting?”
Might I make a suggestion … “John Galt?” Perhaps you might consider taking a little responsibility for your own decisions? There are plenty of resourced available to for wary moviegoers to do a little recon before making movie choices. For instance, one doesn’t have to be a pop culture savant to know that Adam Sandler isn’t teaching Sunday School.
Like it or not, people are going to make adult-themed movies for consenting adults. Just as there are some after dinner conversations for which the children are sent from the table, there are going to be movies that may not be appropriate for younger audiences. There may be some movies that might not be your cup of tea either – that’s where reading movie reviews or paying attention to the ratings might come in handy for you.
Personally, I loved “The Ladykillers.” Sure, it was a little brash and perhaps coarse in places, but it was extremely funny, witty, intelligent – and even touching in a couple places. I am perfectly agreeable to you boycotting any movies that you so choose – I hope that you will understand that I retain the right to enjoy those movies that meet my own parameters of entertainment.
I’m Gay (happy and in a 30 year monogamous relationship)and I agree. Who elects the people in organisations that purport to speak on behalf of all Gays? The Gay totalitarians will destroy any Gays (and anyone else) who oppose the Gay Marriage/Gay adoption, etc. agenda and attack the right of anyone – including Gays- to put up any arguments that debates their points of view. They have seduced many in the straight world, particularly the media and entertainment industries, with false arguments aimed at devaluing the basic principles on which our Civilisation is based. Terrified of being thought to be “illiberal’ the cowed mob go along with it. As for banning derogatory and unpleasant words what IF the writer has written a film that is sympathetic to gays and needs to use nasty words as part of the drama? Ms. Pascal says that producers should reject nasty adjectives referring to Gays. I ask WHO in liberal Hollywood would be mad enough to submit a script with those words?
Wilde Oscar, (love the name choice) bravo to you! I consider myself basically a social libertarian/fiscal conservative. I know that Hollyweird doesn’t speak for all gay people. Thank God being gay doesn’t mean that you aren’t yourself or the child your parents raised or anything you want to be. I think so many gay teens (and I know a few of them) fear that being gay will define too much about them and they want to be free to be something other than a leftist cog in that political wheel to ruin and damnation. Most people gay or straight just want to live quiet lives but leaving off the “quiet desperation”. Somehow Hollyweird took the “love that dare not speak” and has turned it into the love that can’t shut up. I feel for you.
Well said man. Props to you all around.
It’s interesting how often the phrase “shoved down my throat” appears in the Comments section of articles relating to homosexuality.
Interesting choice of words.
There WILL be more Adam Sandler movies. Just without any reference to gays, religion, race, color, creed, comments on age, sex, looks, fashion, animals treatment, politics… and so on. There’s enough censorship by the industry and now this? It’s time to keep your personal business out of business & keep it to yourselves. Before long there will be no such thing as the “entertainment” business. Dumbass move/comments Amy.
Would it still be okay to bash Catholics, Fundamentalists, Mormons, Republicans, Bitter Clingers and other assorted Dorky White Breeders though? Because our comedians have to get their material SOMEWHERE.
Best just to get it anywhere it’s found. Folly and bigotry are found in all corners. Why exclude anyone’s foolishness?
Are the endless holocaust movies exempt?
Freedom of speech- Freedom of thought-?
That would be millions of peoples prayers answered !!!!
All gay people are asking is to be treated equally in all aspects of life. Since when is that too much to ask? Or, do we need a Nelson Mandela to rise and ask this very simple question: Accept us gay people for who we are.
If you want to be “treated equally in all aspects of life” then learn to take a joke like everyone else.
You have no idea how many jokes we let slide.
How about MLK who said a colorless society would be the fairest?
Don’t know what that has to do with Gays but I agree as they are awful! They are as bad as Jerry Lewis and Dukes of Hazard movies and shows! In fact they should be charges with crimes against Humanity for making them!
Will she then define just who it’s ok to insult ?
To call white southerners “crackers” and/or “rednecks”…is that ok ?
What about all the cussing, the name calling of women, demeaning women in movies, sexualizing women and children in movies, guns and other weapons in movies…. don’t just stop there, get it all out. Take it out of videos, and songs and rap. Don’t just put a bandaid on it to feel good.
I’ve got one like you’re looking for, Amy. Just say the word and I’ll send it to you!
Can she make a call to end sexism and racism.
What about cussing? I’m sick and tired of profanity in movies.
You’re sick of words? Words have as much power as you give them. Grow up.
As that is the same thing she’s asking, I’d guess you missed the point of his ironic post entirely.
Tell that to Amy Pascal.
I really think he was being sarcastic…
Words have as much power as you give them, huh? Tell that to the the contributors of this article. I, too, have grown weary of the prolific amount of profanity used in “entertainment.” Most of the impiety is unnecessary and, by it’s constant inclusion, has certainly lost the value to shock. I can understand a character, about to go over a cliff, screaming… “OH S….; but, come on, describing a flower..”Yo Dude, that is one f’n pretty rose” is pretty juvenile in itself.
Well played, nice rebuttal!!!
Yeah, right. The N word and all those other pejorative terms are only as powerful as some thin skinned people allow them to be. Words are, after all, only symbols of ideas. They are like painting a swastikas on synagogues. They are only symbols. Nothing to get bent out of shape about. Thanks for your penetrating analysis (sarcasm)
well how about getting rid of all those trailer park, white trash slurs generated for poor whites or southern whites. how about stopping with all the slurs that baron cohen throws around about a whole country and its’ citizens,or the stereotypes of polish or other eastern european whites. hollywood has a club of certain groups that you can ridicule and that falls under free speech and those that must be portrayed as either victims or saints. the hypocrisy is stunning.
You mean like you have? I too got sick of huge amounts of profanity taking the place of actual dialog a long time ago. So did a great many others.
Every culture uses profanity of some sort. It is a fact of life. Using it correctly is as much of an artform as anything else. Check out some vintage George Carlin for examples. You can change the word or invent new ones, but that word takes on the power it is given. New words solve nothing. What about getting the killing out of movies? Sex and profanity hurt no one.
….grow up? That person has a right to there opinion. Grow up ideed. Just words? I would expect no less from a post by”Anoymous.” How about applying that logic to the topic at hand? Gay slurs and sterotypes, how about just getting over that.
Obviously, you gave power to these words. lol
Then don’t watch them.
People stop going to movies.
Hollywood loses even more money then what they claim they lost on successful movies.
Actors lose money.
Unions lose money
All 3 groups quit giving large amounts of money to the Democrats.
Democrats lose money.
Congress passes law to help bailout the industry.
Tax Payers are charged additional taxes to cover loss of money from us not gong to the movies.
More crappy movies are made.
That’s a logical fallacy most refer to as “Slippery Slope”
Slippery slope is a logical fallacy but that doesn’t invalidate it.
Hear! Hear! Ain’t it the truth!
Sony co-distributed Django Unchained and how many times was the “N” word used in this film again?????????
Ms. Pascal greenlit “Superbad” and how many times did the jewish actor playing McLovin say the “N” word???????
Hows about we start THERE!!
Yes, I too prefer the good old days when married characters slept in different beds and we tied onions to our belts, which was the style at the time.
Give me five bees for a quarter you’d say…
Umm… what? People shouldn’t say these words… Characters in movies can. Characters in movies don’t have to be nice, tolerant or kind and to make them do that would do a disservice to storytelling and any kind of creative expression. Sanitizing art and asking a filmmaker or artist to round off the edges of their characters is just the kind of thing a movie executive would say and it’s just wrong.
And no I don’t condone the use of these words in real life ever but some real people do and movies should show that.
The willful destruction of art is not at all in the spirit of liberalism either. The war between liberal and conservatives no longer exists. The liberals are on the right and the left is authoritarian and power seeking. This is tantamount to book burning. While it is true that good story telling demands characters who can say or do just about anything, and often artist use such characters to make a point that might be politically correct, like Archie Bunker for example; but to create true art the artist must must be free to create characters and situations that make arguments that aren’t politically correct. Sadly it is almost impossible to come up with an example of that except for perhaps South Park. As it is Hollywood panders too much to create real art. The constant self conscious “positive” stereotypes are intrusively cut and pasted into stories destroying the suspension of disbelief. Some of them have been repeated so much that they have become modern theatre conventions but still the left isn’t happy. It is unbelievable.
Spot on. Thank you.
good post.
Kathy Tobacco, really good post. Yes, there is a world of difference between art and propaganda. Propaganda has a way of annihilating art. And most of what Hollywood/TV extrudes today is propaganda. This Hollywoodista, Amy Pascal, is simply demanding more deathly boring propaganda.
Kathy, I applaud you.
Best post.
Good post, maybe the lady who gave the speech will read it and realize she is misguided.
The key word here is “propaganda”. Art illuminates truth and propaganda attempts to convince you that something is true. Let’s not pretend that Hollywood is not propagandizing to advance the Liberal agenda. They seem to be trying to shape our perception of reality rather than reflect it. With regard to profanity, there is a time and a place for everything. You wouldn’t (hopefully) start riffing MF’ers at your grandma’s 80th birthday, so context matters. No one in Hollywood is qualified to teach me anything, but they can show me things that might enlighten me. Spare me the blunt, artless didacticism. I think the difference there is clear.
So she wants to eliminate the realism in film…
It’s scary how such people rise to the top
I agree. Stop telling others how to live and how about lead by example. You can’t change history and why would you want to – doing so would allow no evolution of our nature or tolerance. But then it seems there are some who have no tolerance, even though they say they are accepting. Strange.
True, newsflash to the Mormons and fundies out there who hate R rated movies. ART REFLECTS LIFE! You can’t sugar coat the issues.
As an artist – composer – myself, it is true that sometimes art reflects life (including the ugly side of it), but art can also uplift and propose something higher and better than the daily grist of sex, violence, profanity, and gloom that seems to so pervade society today – especially in ‘art’.
What about cussing? I am sick and tired of profanity in movies.
Yeah! And better than that, let’s take all those words out of all the books in world literature. And let’s censor all the songs. And let’s…burn all those books…no…wait! Let’s imprison–no…let’s take out everyone who offends us. Then everyone will be perfectly politically correct!
You know, hiding makes it worse. The N-words is a good example.
You don’t need less… you need more, so the words lose all meaning.
Good idea. Lead by example in your local hood and tell us what happens.
Ban any depiction of smoking, drinking, fatty foods, drugs. In fact ban beautiful people from getting acting roles as it may make average looking people feel bad about themselves.
Now there’s some good ideas. . . makes the perfect point.
Tell em Harrison!
That would leave only movies with Alvin and the Chipmunks. LOL
And hang weights around the necks of the strong people. Everyone be equal!
Although I echo her sentiments, this has about as much of a chance of happening as Nbc has of coming up with good programming•••highly unlikely…
Acting as if people don’t behave badly in movies is NOT good programing.
Ugh…lets make movies that don’t represent life. Great idea….idiot.
Dixon*
prison rape has nothing to do with homosexuality. stupid comparison. and in other news, let’s not make any movies that make any sort of statement whatsoever. people are too stupid to choose for themselves.
How about slurs against catholics, straights. Christians, stay at home moms, working moms, men, white men, Europeans, cowboys, constitutionalists, law abiding citizens, wives, husbands, George Washington, hicks, hillbillies, west Virginia, Martians…
Catholics, Straights. Christians, stay at home moms, working moms, men, white men, Europeans, cowboys, constitutionalists, law abiding citizens, wives, husbands, George Washington, hicks, hillbillies, West Virginian and Martians are killing themselves because they are being told by society that they don’t belong and have no value.
I am not saying what Pascal proposes is the best answer, but there is a definite difference between being gay and being those things you list above.
Yes, it does happen. All parts of society are affected. Ever hear of bullying? Do you think only gays and lesbians are bulllied? Not so much.
There is no difference if what’s being said is derogatory.
there is a definite difference between being gay and being those things you list above.
I don’t see any. Care to enlighten us?
When was the last time you heard about someone being beaten up strictly for being from West Virginia? Who gets bullied because they are a constitutionalists? Last time I checked, there weren’t thousands of kids being kicked out of their family homes at 15 because they are stay at home moms. I’ve never seen a video posted on where a teenager talks about committing suicide because they are George Washington.
If you truly cannot see the difference, I am wasting my words on you.
No one said anyone is being bullied for being from West Virginia. It’s the SLURS in the movies made toward hillbillies (or any of the other groups listed) that should be banned, if we’re going to ban gay slurs.
I know! Let’s make all movies from now on about sunshine and puppy dogs! (oh, lord, here comes PETA…)
You have managed to not only miss the point of my post (that there is a difference between the groups the original poster listed and the gay community) and Ms Pascal’s comments, which were not intended to remove every instance of derogatory terms, rather to ask writers to think about what they are writing, and not use hurtful words as a cheap convention to get a laugh or give the villain some additional heat.
Quite an impressive feat, being as oblivious as you are.
You are such a drama queen. This type of over exaggeration erodes gay support, dumb ass.
You’re correct. Being gay is protected.
No there isn’t a difference. No one with strength or self-possession should kill themselves over what others say about them.
Grow up.
Nicely said!
Gay youth aren’t more deserving than other homeless persons; however, Christians are really good at shutting the door of the homeless shelter once they find out the one in need is gay.
It’s got to hurt being that stupid.
Oh please. Our food closet and shelter are open to anyone and we have quite a variety of people we help every week. We have drug addicts, homeless, wife abusers, homosexuals, prostitutes, etc.
You are the one giving into stereotypes. Get over your own prejudices.
Are you slow? Unable to put context around comments? Good lord. She was speaking at a fundraiser for homeless gay youth – who are often the victims of this particular stereotype. If you want her to take a stand on slurs against cowboys, invite her to your next monthly meeting. But don’t get pissed off that she focused her comments solely on issues affecting the very group the event was organized to help.
oh, so it’s ok to say God’s name in vain, but don’t say homosexual slurs? really? why not stop both, as well as the senseless use of the f-bomb…go back to writing movies with a decent script instead of worthless garbage.
Homosexuality is real.
God and religion are fairy tales told by the power hungry to control the weak minded.
So because you don’t believe in something it becomes your right to deem in a ‘fairy tale’? Who gives you that right? Does that mean if someone doesn’t believe in homosexuality they get to deem it a ‘fairy tale’?
Homosexuality is real. I know because I am one.
I think you missed the point.
Just because you don’t beleive in God, probably because he denouces your lifestyles as sinful does not mean he does not exist. You have only as much right to your opinion as I do. Guess what in a true democracy majority rules. We don’t live in a true democracy however. By the way if you think Christians are disapproving go annouce your homosexuality on the streets of Tehran or Mecca and see how long you stay alive!
I hate to disappoint you, but for some of us being Christian is a lot like being gay. We are just born with an innate sense that there exists a great and powerful being. Even when we try to drink it away, deny it with bad actions, and endure attempts by our sober and more critical thinking friends who insist we be deprogrammed, we can’t stop believing it. No matter how how I try to rationalize its non-existence, attempt to bury it internally, and just plain deny it, I can’t. I am pretty sure I am not the only one either.
Christians are real. You are either treat everyone like she suggests, or no one. Antying else is right out of Orwell.
Not the point, spaghetti monster. Thankfully we live in a place where you are free to believe in nothing without being persecuted for it, and others (thankfully) are free to believe as they wish to believe without being persecuted for that (although they do have to put up with you snidely telling them how stupid they are). The point is, gay slurs and certain depictions of gay people and are offensive to many people. And religious slurs and certain depictions of religion are also offensive to (probably even more) people. Though I agree with the other posters who think this is silly at best and smacks of censorship at worst – let’s depict real life and let the chips fall where they may. But it isn’t for you to decide that, just because the possibility of the divine seems nonsensical to you, that it’s okay to mock it in film, any more than it’s okay to mock homosexuality. Either one is okay if it’s in the service of artistic endeavor and free speech. Neither is okay if it’s just a slur for the sake of being a slur.
Amen!
“God and religion are fairy tales told by the power hungry to control the weak minded.”
It’s typical of people like you who always talk about being open minded, and accepting other people’s differences, yet, you just displayed how you can’t practice what you lecture.
I guess you live by the narrow minded motto, “accept me, but I won’t accept thee”.
Spaghetti Monster is a reprobate. Blinded by garbage like Dawkins, Hitchens, Colbert, Maher, and Stewart.
And for the record, Colbert is a devout Catholic who teaches Sunday school. Not that you’d ever do any research or know what you’re talking about.
“And for the record, Colbert is a devout Catholic who teaches Sunday school. Not that you’d ever do any research or know what you’re talking about.”
You can’t be a “devout” Catholic and be liberal on social issues… be it abortion, etc. He might be a “cafeteria” Catholic.
spaghetti monster, I feel sorry for you . . . . .
. . . .. sad atheist hypocrite . . . .
A whole lot of the country will disagree with you dumba**.
That would be expecting too much. It is OK to bash God, Jesus & anything else that is seen as old-fashioned & useless in this “new world” don’tcha know. Like, how far back from modern are you anyway? (tongue in cheek held firmly)
If only we could have some programming w/o profanity & blasphemy which would uplift instead of put down values which have stood the test of time. It is so tiresome now. Constant references to homosexuality and featuring it with characters such as on Grey’s Anatomy is just sickening & is no more than an effort to make it acceptable by the writer-creator who is a lesbian herself.
Even if we hold no real animosity toward the people who practice it, we don’t have to accept it either & the constant throwing it in our faces is just hardening our positions instead of softening.
Very well put!!
If you don’t want it to be thrown into your face, don’t watch it. I’m gay. How dare you judge me and others like that? You don’t know what you are talking about it.
We’re human beings and if you don’t want to accept, fine. Put your head in the sand and ignore the world is changing for those who were rejected in the past.
No more stereotypes in movies?
Guess there goes all the white, conservative, rich and or religious villains.
Movies are going to be pretty darn bland going forward, aren’t they? Everyone is afraid to be seen as non compliant with the PC police.
Don’t worry. They’ll still be able to go to the well and pull out the tried-and-true villains they always use when they need some PC bad guys that it’s still ok to hate on: Nazis!
I support this, I also support eliminating stereotypes of social conservatives in movies, just so long as you can have a negatively portrayed gay or social conservative character, just like you can have positively portrayed one.
“How about next time, when any of us are reading a script and it says words like fag, or faggot – homo – dyke – take a pencil and just cross it out. Just don’t do it.”
That’s good, because its usually caricatures of conservatives saying those words.
I don’t know why the narrow focus though.
“take a pencil and just cross it out”. There’s a word for that — it’s called “censorship.”
There are a lot of good ways to fight prejudice.
A new Hays Code is not one of them.
But a new Gays Code is!
Is she admitting that violence in hollywood television shows and movies are responsible for creating more violence too.
Fair point. Hollywood doesn’t really seem to be all that concerned about the sexual smut and filth they put out; if you even hint at the idea that what they put out in music, movies and television might somehow influence the people watching it, you’re called a “Bible-thumper”, or an “extremist”.
I’m old enough to remember when Hollywood used to say that marriage was “just a piece of paper”, and did everything they could to destroy it, and now they want us to get all worked up and angry that gays and lesbians aren’t allowed to take part in this “sacred institution”. Hollywood should leave the sermons and the lecturing to the churches.
Well said man. Hollywood is partly to blame for sure. So much trash.
Parents need to be parents too.
No more gay jokes and slurs? WHAT…is NOTHING sacred anymore?
Great idea! I think we should have Homeland security enforce the strict censorship of all publications. I’m sure Janet would do as good a job at that as she has at her assigned task. Censorship has no place here! Not even the politically correct kind!
I request the following stereotypes be eliminated:
* Nerds
* Dorks
* Band Geeks
* Clueless dads
* Abusive husbands
* Men who don’t respect women
* Dads who can’t help around the house
* Bosses who treat their employees terribly
If the gay stereotype gets eliminated because they find them offensive, then I want the above eliminated also. I want to stop feeling disenfranchised by so many commercials and sitcoms that portray me in a negative light.
I could easily point out dozens of movies where men are portrayed as evil scum-sucking persons who get it in the end. Many of these appear on Lifetime and portray women as victims of men. I vote that we cancel Lifetime network and put an end to this outrage
Oh wait .. never mind. I have this ability to recognize ‘humor’ and ‘fiction’ and realize they aren’t talking about me personally, or men in general. My ego isn’t so large that I think any negative reference to any trait that I have isn’t directly targeting me.
Amy .. if you don’t like what Hollywood is putting out there, write your own script. Just because you pick a few depressing examples of movies where things didn’t work out for a gay character, doesn’t mean there aren’t others where they do. Each person in those videos are characters with specific traits. In case you didn’t realize it, somebody has to be the bad guy movies. Otherwise, all we get are reruns of Ozzie and Harriet, Cosby, and The Brady Bunch.
I refuse to allow my movies sanitized because some people can’t separate truth from Hollywood.
But sawing a person’s head in half with a chainsaw…no problem.
For someone so confident in their “natural” sexuality, homosexuals sure are insecure about being called names. One would think that if they were confident of their choice and felt secure in who they are, this would not be an issue.
a) It isn’t a choice. Or did you choose to be straight? The only people who can choose are bisexuals.
b) Try living in a world where you have family members and friends reject you for being gay and you’d have to be made of stone not to be insecure.
Yet another group “protected”. Add to the list now containing blacks, jews, muslims, obese, women, etc……
GLAAD gives Brett Ratner an “award” but not a word about his misogyny. Where’s the studio head on that? It’s too bad when powerful women take up for other causes but neglect their own group.
