GLAAD announced that Madonna will present CNN’s Anderson Cooper with the lesbian-gay-bisexual-transgender media advocacy organization’s Vito Russo Award at
the 24th Annual GLAAD Media Awards at the New York ceremony Saturday, March 16. The San Francisco ceremony is April 20. Cooper and Madonna are longtime friends. The Vito Russo Award is presented to an openly lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender media professional who has contributed to promoting equality. It’s named for Vito Russo, a founder of GLAAD and activist with ACT UP who chronicled early depictions of LGBT people in movies and in his book The Celluloid Closet. Previous honorees include Ricky Martin, Rosie O’Donnell, Alan Cumming, Cynthia Nixon, Nathan Lane, Cherry Jones, Elton John, k.d. lang, Brian Graden, and Tom Ford.

GLAAD needs to stop giving awards to people for simply coming out of the closet. This isn’t 1995 anymore.
As a gay guy who has always been suspicious of activists and their organizations (from first-hand experience), of course you’re right, Michael. I’m no victim, nor do I need people to go around pretending to speak for me. Same applies to my friends. We’re a protected species on campuses, in the workplace – hell in general. It’s time to disband, go home, and get real jobs. Unless, of course, “equality” is only the stated goal when indeed the real one is power and influence.
I like Cooper, but how exactly is he deserving of this award? All he did was finally confirm what everyone had known for years; it was the biggest “open secret” in the media. He comes out in September of 2012 and now is getting a humanitarian award for promoting “equality”? I don’t see it.
Much like the NAACP Image Awards and The Nobel Peace Prize, the threshold for qualifying seems to be very low these days.
gay journalist wins a glaad award its 2013 get over it already

trying to clean up the mess of his sordid manipulations of
the Sandy Hook event?
WHY WE NO LONGER HAVE A TV.
His only accomplishment is that he is a gay celebrity. The media tried its best to elevate this guy to stardom regardless of the fact he lacked any substantive accomplishments. His journalistic credentials are questionable and the public has bailed on both CNN’s 360 and his syndicated talk show. As stated previously, this silly award is no different than trends among other liberal special interest groups: support and admire any and all mediocrity as long as the honoree supports the political agenda (leftist). The irony here is the fact that Vito Russo’s “The Celluloid Closet” was quite an indictment of much of Hollywood’s treatment of homosexuality on the screen. It can be argued that many previous “honorees” only served to cement the negative stereotypes many have of gays and lesbians. Hollywood continues to churn out silly effeminate gay characters on both the big and small screen with little to no outrage. But be politically conservative and the sharp tongues will surely seek to destroy you.
“His journalistic credentials are questionable”. Huh? Ambiguous, I think your commentary about the irony of “The Celluloid Closet” was spot on. However, when was the last time you put your life at risk, reporting from an obvious danger zone? He’s been doing it for years. Way before he started at CNN. The real irony, is that he doesn’t need to do any of it, at all. “His only accomplishment is that he is a gay celebrity”. Do your homework. I’ll be glad to tuck you in afterwards.
I agree with the chorus of negative criticism. Anderson Cooper makes low-grade television for imbeciles, and it’s especially disappointing considering he was once a solid field reporter. Now he’s a self-righteous do-gooder who sounds more like Nancy Grace or Sally Jessy Raphael, sacrificing integrity for a bigger paycheck. I’m a gay guy and.find zero inspiration in Anderson Cooper, a spoiled rich kid with good looks whose only challenge in life was being gay. GLAAD is supposed to be helping the marginalized, not throwing galas and dinner parties for those already rich in accolades.
Another Nimrod.
childish name-calling? great. And your point about Cooper risking his in a war zone makes me think you never saw his banal daytime talk show.
What a ridiculous award.
This really reeks of desperation on GLAAD’s part if you ask my opinion. I know they are all about promoting the gay lifestyle, but Cooper is no gay hero by any stretch. This is pretty sad.
