The Chronicles Of Narnia star Anna Popplewell has been cast in a lead role opposite Adelaide Kane in the CW’s drama pilot Reign, from CBS TV Studios. It chronicles the rise to power of Mary Queen of Scots (Kane) when she arrives in France as a 15-year-old, betrothed to Prince Francis (Toby Regbo), and with her best friends as ladies-in-waiting. Brit Popplewell, repped by ICM Partners, Luber Roklin and UK’s United, plays Mary’s friend/lady-in-waiting Lola. She recently starred in Web series Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn.
Cliff Curtis (Missing) has joined Fox’s drama pilot Gang Related, from 20th TV and Imagine TV. Written by Chris Morgan, directed by Allen Hughes and exec produced by Brian Grazer, Gang Related centers on Ryan Lopez (Ramon Rodriguez), a gang member sent in to infiltrate the San Francisco Police Department. Curtis, repped by Abrams Artists, plays Javier Acosta who runs La Familia Sud, one of the most dangerous and powerful Latino gangs in San Francisco.

What kind of 16th Century name is “Lola”? I guess we should be lucky the CW isn’t giving us Ladies Megan, Amber and Kourtney.
The name Lola is short for or a variation of several names. Most notably Dolores.
Lola is of Spanish origin and it means sorrows or lady of sorrows. It’s a name that’s derived from the Virgin Mary.
In French, it’s a variant of names like Charlotte and Caroline. From what I’ve seen, the name goes as far back to the 1800′s, but it could be further. So, it fits.
If the show were going for historical accuracy, the result would be something people would laugh at and call bad writing. That is to say, the historical truth is that Mary Queen Of Scots had three ladies in waiting, and all three of them were named Mary. Yes, four Mary’s, counting the Queen herself. Just try to image that reality turned into a show and how confusing it would be.

can anyone who’s read the script for reign describe what the part of lola is like? i’m so keen to see anna in a juicy role but am a bit nervous about the quality of it.
Good for Cliff Curtis, he was about the only bright spot on Trauma and was a stand out on Missing..Hope he gets a hit series with this one..
The 4 Mary’s didn’t include MQOS. They are thought to have been Mary Seton, Mary Beaton, Mary Livingston & Mary Fleming. And they are believed to have gone by nicknames to avoid confusion. There was also possibly a fifth Mary, Mary Hamilton, all of whom were ladies in waiting to MQOS in France. Very little is known of Mary’s time in France, so it’s actually ripe for imagining. Not saying it’s something I care to see imagined by the CW, but I wouldn’t mind an HBO, AMC or Showtime version.
