EXCLUSIVE: On the eve of the opening of his latest film Olympus Has Fallen, director Antoine Fuqua is in early talks to re-team with his Training Day star Denzel Washington on The Equalizer for Sony Pictures and Escape Artists. That is the film that has had a lot of helmers chasing after the script by Richard Wenk prompted the studio to expedite Washington’s deal and set a late spring start date, likely in Boston. The film is a smartly budgeted thriller based on the TV series that will come in around $50 million and is designed to launch the first franchise for Washington, who’s coming off an Oscar-nominated turn in Flight.

Fuqua directed Washington to an Academy Award for Best Actor in Training Day for his portrayal of a crooked cop who creates havoc for a recruit (Ethan Hawke) he’s supposed to be training to join an elite undercover force. It was a full out badass performance, and Fuqua and Washington have been looking to work together ever since. This certainly seems like a strong fit for the helmer whose recent films have included Brooklyn’s Finest and Shooter. The Equalizer is loosely based on the TV series that starred Edward Woodward as a mysterious former covert operations officer who helps people in trouble, and was created by Michael Sloan and Richard Lindheim. The film has that basic premise but takes off in its own way, tailored to Washington’s skills. He’ll play a solitary, monastic figure who hates injustice and devotes himself to helping people who are being victimized. The film is being produced by Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal, Steve Tisch, Alex Siskin, Mace Neufeld, Michael Sloan, and Tony Eldridge. David Bloomfield is exec producer.
The FilmDistrict release Olympus Has Fallen stars Gerard Butler, Morgan Freeman and Aaron Eckhart in a drama about a terrorist attack on Capitol Hill. Fuqua is repped by CAA.

As much as I have a feeling this is going to be another “Denzel goes hard” movie, I can’t wait. Hope this falls through!
This script is way too good for Fuqua
Is it better than the script for Training Day?
Or SOUTHPAW for that matter?
if this falls through it’s going to become embarrassing for those guys who keep planting these stories about this wonderful TV show. i say it’s too much information too soon. Wanna bet this never comes to fruition. IMDB says this film is in pre-production. That must mean they’re spending money on crew before anything is really set. That doesn’t sound smart at all. I guess like all film production, it’s called “flying by the seat of your pants”. Perhaps Denzel should direct.
Just watched Training Day again. I think Fuqua can pull it off.
Woodward’s EQUALIZER” said it all about the concept. And now there”s PERSON of INTEREST doing well helping victims, albeit also on TV. This new “take” on EQUALIZER had better be something special. All on Denzel’s shoulders so Fuqua better deliver. Latter can’t afford another slip up like OLYMPUS, which will probably open well this weekend then fall precipitously.
Fuqua is talented. Just having their two names attached is enough to have that many producers sign on for only a $50M budget. That means they’re expecting some large back-end. I think people will flock to a Denzel vengeance get-what’s-coming-to-you film. I’ll be there.
Getting everyone on board happens with every film. Even when projects sour, studios have it in their budgets for these kinds of operations to happen. They just try to minimize it. That’s one of the differences between a profitable studio and a lousy one.
What was interesting about the television show was that it was loved by the 35-44 and 45-54 crowds tremendously.
God, the directors they line up keep getting worse. So bummed we’ll never see Refn’s version.
Still wish I could’ve seen Fuqua’s version of “American Gangster” filmed 100% in NYC and co-starring Benecio Del Toro
With all due respect to Washington, this title is more appropriate to re-boot as a cable series. Denzel will not lead a franchise, simply because he seems to take every role thrown at him. Plus, audiences have shown that not every former television show is accepted as a feature film. “A-Team” anyone?
He was so quick to announce he was directing the Tupac movie (aka Morgan Creek mess) and several others. I guess eventually one will stick.
The movie he & Denzel should be doing, and he knows it more that anyone is SOUTHPAW.
Money is one thing, but money can also be made with prestige, quality, respect and a great script.
Better movie for both parties.
Someone, CAA, tell Antoine, to do Southpaw first…..The Equalizer will ways be there, and after Southpaw, he may actually be able to make choices for the right reasons….
Whilst I would rather Antoine Fuqua direct the ’24′ movie, this nonetheless sounds like a perfect fit for the talented director; Denzel and he have been looking to work together again for a while, it’s a gritty action drama (something that Fuqua excels at), and the script is reportedly pretty stellar. Should Fuqua siign on for this in the next week or so, filming could commence this summer no problem, and with Denzel’s undeniable star power, a responsible $50m budget, and a totally achievable April 2014 releae date, ‘The Equalizer’ movie looks like a win-win all round from where I’m sitting, this could be good… REALLY good.
I would love to see “Southpaw” come to the Big Screen. And for Fuqua to Direct it, I don’t think that you could get a better director to colaborate with the writeing style of Southpaw. With the attachements of MnM, and Fuqua, I don’t see why the Big Studios aren’t making it happen ! I have big hunch, that Fuqua is singing on to “Equalizer” , I’m sure it will shoot this summer, and be in theatres next April. Best of luck on “SOUTHPAW” , Great script ! Great writer…! Great Director in Fuqua ! That’s a great K.S. Combo!!! ; )
Fuqua was always my 1 choice at directing ‘The Equalizer’ It’s just destiny! That’s why all of the other Great Directors couldn’t stick thus far..It’s another award winning movie for Denzel and Antoine Fuqua, and the fates have decided!Mark my words!I knew it when “Cousin Lou”,informed Antoine, about Sonys New Franchise ‘The Equalizer” that it was Destiny for them to team up onece again and make movie magic!!! This will be ‘Training Day” times ten !! Wait and see !! RK
