After the record-breaking success of last week’s Veronica Mars Kickstarter launch, another crew of filmmakers is striking out on the crowdfunding platform with a film linked to a beloved cult series. Filmmakers Jeff Smith and Neil Lieberman spent five years nabbing interviews with Arrested Development‘s creatives and cast including Mitch Hurwitz, Ron Howard, Brian Grazer, Jason Bateman, Will Arnett, David Cross, Jeffrey Tambor, Portia de Rossi, Scott Baio, Henry Winkler, Alia Shawkat, Tony Hale, and Jay Chandrasekhar. They even got Arrested Development enthusiast Keith Olbermann to sit for the camera and crossed the country visiting fans of the cancelled and soon-to-be-revived comedy show. Now they’re seeking a little over $20,000 to pay Fox for use of photos in their documentary, with 27 days to go. Donation prizes range from digital downloads and DVDs/Blu-rays to a private screening of the film. The series returns with 14 new episodes via Netflix in May. Here’s their trailer for the film:

Party Down, Firefly, Enlightened, and more! It’s an exciting time to have a cult show that was cancelled in one’s back pocket.
There’s something extremely wrong with Fox charging $20k for still photos that effectively will be promotion for the series. Maybe these guys can find it in the banana stand.
There’s always money in the banana stand
pathetic…the stars are rich…their fans are suckers if they pay
It’s a great sign when the first two words of the trailer are the directors’ names.
all the actors in Arrested Development are RICH 1%’ers and they can’t raise 20K between them??? they have to mooch from the poor Public? I tell ya, some of these Hollywood actors are cheap cheap cheap
I don’t get kickstarter. Why would I fund (and take all the risk) a project with no shot at an upside? People need to raise money the old fashioned way. Kickstarter is the online hipster version of panhandling.
This has been said elsewhere and far better, but a LOT of people don’t give their money to a Kickstarter project because they care at all about being hip, or even about the project being made or not. Most Kickstarter projects are just giant pre-sales. You want to help us make a movie? Here, have this T-Shirt and DVD you’d normally pay $40 for anyway, AND we get to use most of that money towards our own production costs.
Yeah, it’s pathetic when big money celebs put their hand out on Kickstarter. Really slimy. Kickstarter should be for people who really need the dough, not these folks.
I’m hoping this Kickstarter just gets Fox and The Arrested Execs to make a phone call and say.. just give these guys the rights to the stupid stills… or even better. Trade licensing of the stills for use of their interviews in extra content for a future box set. That seems fair and worthwhile… With Blueray Sizes today, they could probably take that whole documentary and make it available to people who buy the box set. Lots of win-wins…
these are not “big money celebs”. they self-funded this documentary and are first-time filmmakers.
i agree, tom strong. the kickstarter acts as free advertising and promotion for the documentary so if Fox has any decency they will call it a wash and hand over the rights.
If you spend a dime on any of this you’re just an idiot…
There is plenty of cash at the top for these projects to get made.
Unless fans are getting royalties as “producers” this shit needs to end quick.
So there’s never been an independent project that’s failed because it didn’t have enough money?
If they’re throwing in promo products/rewards roughly equal to what people are pledging, and it’s not a ‘donation’, why exactly is this bad?
Kickstarter was for indie films to raise money but now all these cult shows are taking over
I don’t think these guys have anything to do with the show and it seems like they’ve been at it for a long time. It’s not really fair to blame FOX, the actors, or anybody else affiliated with the show on the fact that these guys need cash to get their project out. It seems like the perfect fit for Kickstarter and at the end of the day there’s a cool doc. for us fans and FOX gets a big fat ad for their product.
