Southland‘s Ben McKenzie has been cast as the male lead in the CBS drama pilot The Advocates. True Blood alumna Brit Morgan also has been cast in the pilot, written by Bruno Heller and directed by David Nutter. For McKenzie, the casting is in second position to Southland, which is currently airing its fifth season. The critically praised cop show, which originated on NBC, has never been a big ratings performer and is once again on the bubble, but it has been a prestige series for TNT, which has not made a decision on its future. Both The Advocates and Southland are produced by Warner Bros. TV. Advocates centers on
lawyer Shannon Carter and ex-con Henry Bird (McKenzie) who team up as “victim advocates,” going to the very edge of the law to right wrongs and fight for the underdog. Morgan, repped by Innovative Artists, David Dean Management and lawyer Stuart Rosenthal, will play Henry’s sister Rose, a tattooed and pierced supermarket cashier. She also did a guest stint on Southland opposite McKenzie last year. McKenzie is with CAA, Management 360, and attorney PJ Shapiro.

I really miss The OC. Whatever happened to Mischa Barton? Lifetime should give her a show
I’d love to see her again on TV! She should grab some pilot while they are not yet fully cast.
Southland’s ratings on Wednesday are terrible. I hope it comes back, but I am not holding my breath.
“Southland” is one of the best dramas (and best ensembles) on television. I really hope TNT gives it another season. It’s one of my only appointment-television shows.
Exactly my thoughts. I don’t know why Emmys haven’t bitten it yet. Voters too lazy, maybe?
This is one of the very best series on television, but it’s hard to get fully invested in it, knowing that the plug could be pulled any second.
Fn love Ben McKenzie. Dude deserves work till he dies.
Yes, Ben McKenzie has more talent and more charisma that most of the current crop of young A-list movie stars ( ex. James Franco, Jonah Hill, Tobey Maguire, Liam Hemsworth, Sam Claflin, and Josh Hutcherson ) . This guy is magnetic. I remember seeing him in an episode of Punk’d, and I couldn’t take my eyes off of him. I don’t understand why the film executives are not pursuing this man.
Amazing news. Great role for Ben. Loves this pilot.
Such a blasé script – there were better legal dramas cbs had to choose from
Stuart Rosenthal is a powerhouse attorney. Congrats Morgan. You are in good hands.
Count me in as a “Southland” uber fan. I believe the writing and acting on that show is uncompromisingly excellent. (I know big-city beat cops who say it is the most “real” and insightful cop show TV has ever put forth, which is high praise from a cynical lot!) So, can anyone explain to me why this show is struggling, ratings-wise? I’ve watched four seasons of “Southland” and its stand-alone seasons are better executed than some entire life-spans of shows such as “ER” or “Third Watch” !!!
I miss the days when entertainment reporters such as Bill Carter of the NYT or Howard Kurtz of the Washington Post would answer such questions by telling us the behind-the-scenes drama — for example, why did NBC kick “southland” to the curb when the rest of its lineup sucked so badly, and, conversely, why did TNT take a chance…. interestingly, I do wonder if TNT can become a network of “black sheep” shows such as “Southland” or “Community”, castoff orphans that could shine under the right network…..
Any thoughts to any of the above?
Brit Morgan is incredible, her talent and range of emotions is unparalleled. She’s fearless and I can’t wait to watch her in this!
I’m guessing he is not going to star in both Southland and this new project. That means Southland is dead? I really hope not. : (
One of the most underrated actors right now.
Why doesn’t NBC move SOUTHLAND back to a 10:00 PM slot?
@ Jim – Because NBC cancelled it? TNT saved it and has given it 30 more episodes.
Mischa’s in a thriller coming out in late March. Looks good actually. Called ‘A Resurrection’.
Yay! I was waiting for Brit to get a lead in a series! She’s fantastic!
I second that emotion. Brit Morgan can ROCK any ROLL
