EXCLUSIVE: Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, the Glee scribe who helped fix the troubled Broadway musical Spider-Man Turn Off The Dark, has signed on to write a new line of the venerable Archie Comics. And he’s found a way to inject a topical sensibility into the adventures of Archie, Betty, Veronica and Jughead: flesh eating zombies! Aguirre-Sacasa will write Afterlife With Archie, which ponders a zombie apocalypse in Riverdale. This will run alongside the usual lines of Archie Comics, but if you ask me, it’s exactly what Riverdale needed.
Here’s how it happens: Jughead’s beloved pooch Hotdog is run over by Reggie in his roadster. He convinces Sabrina to hatch a spell to bring back the pooch, but when Hotdog bites Jughead, he soon craves flesh. Aguirre-Sacasa certainly knows horror: he scripted the upcoming remake of Carrie that stars Chloe Moretz and Julianne Moore.
Aguirre-Sacasa said the new comic line “combines two of my great passions, Archie comics and horror comics. This series came out of conversations with Jon Goldwater, asking questions like ‘What if the Archie characters found themselves in a Stephen King novel like The Stand or a Sam Raimi movie like The Evil Dead? Could we pull that off, tonally? We’re really going for it. The first arc is called Escape from Riverdale. The second arc is called, brace yourself, Betty RIP.” He said the gore will be balanced with “elements that are quintessentially Archie.”

Zombies really are your best entertainment value for a dollar you can’t beat them they are incredibly cheap to work with but difficult to control. Man am I hungry! I need a hamburger made from Veronica!
I’d rather see the series stick with parallel world weddings and interracial dating (because you know…Valerie from Josie and the Pussycats is kinda superhot) then hopping aboard the latest gravy train of trends. Everyone’s doing zombies. How much can you beat a dead horse?
The Kiss team ups were lame.

Comic books have always reflected what’s happening in pop-culture — Archie comics especially. This fits in perfectly with what their books have always been.
Of course, considering Archie has actually outdone both Marvel and DC in their mistreatment of their creators and elder talent, I personally won’t be purchasing anything of theirs.
Okay maybe I should realize that nothing is so crazy anymore that it can be regarded as a joke, but this has got to be a joke, right?
What an AMAZING idea!!!
We all know where this is going!
Josie and Pussycats get fucked by Malcolm MacDowell and become cat people!
Dennis the Menace and Mr. Wilson team up to flush out a nest of werewolves! Dennis’s slingshot skills sure come in handy!
It’s the Great Hellmouth, Charlie Brown! or Peppermint Patty the Vampire Slayer!
LOVE this. Archies is timeless and still appeals to teens today. I loved the comic books and animated series.
But the Archies’ musical career needs to be revived. The Zombie Arhies must have a hit single a la “Sugar Sugar”. Bring back the Groovy Ghoulies.
Now bring us Dennis The Menace vs. The Zombie Mr. Wilson!
Other way around: Zombie Dennis is SO much more interesting!
Isn’t a bit early for April Fools?
If you read up on the history comics – it’s pretty interesting. Recently, however, the parent company has seen a lot of in-fighting and lawsuits, regarding “bad business decisions,” etc. Regardless, does anybody remember the Christian Archie comics in the early 70s?
The series’ creation was inspired by the Andy Hardy movies.
I think this idea, if not a joke, is idiotic.
Spiral Christain Comics. That was the company who printed the Christian comic book version of Archie. They used to sell those at a church where I had my boy scout meetings.
Boy, that brings back awful memories.

Will the Little Archies fight the Little Zombies ?
Meet him at Meltdown Comics this Wednesday at 6 or so. He is a good dude. meltcomics.com/blog/2013/03/04/archie-meets-glee-signing-at-meltdown-comics-3062013/
If ARCHIE vs. PUNISHER was able to work, then anything can.
And, no, I’m not joking.
Yes! That was awesome.
OKAY seriously??? There was an Archie vs. Punisher???? must. google. now.
I agree…if the world’s most bitter and jaded vigilante/cold-blooded killing machine can fit in with jovial, always-has-two-hot-chicks-at-his-beck-and-call, beautiful life Archie…then zombies aren’t that far of a stretch. It puts me in mind of the beginning of Thriller.
So…was that A v. P mash-up decent at all?
