EXCLUSIVE: Colin Trevorrow, who made his feature directorial debut on the no-budget Sundance pic Safety Not Guaranteed, is about to make a Tyrannosaurus rex-sized leap in scale for his next film. He has been set by Universal Pictures to helm Jurassic Park 4, the third sequel to the dinosaur franchise hatched from Michael Crichton’s novel.
Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes scribes Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver have written the script. Frank Marshall is producing with Patrick Crowley, and Steven Spielberg is executive producer. It will be shot in 3D and get released June 13, 2014. This is Spielberg’s baby, and he got this giant franchise going by directing the first two films. This is a big piece of business for Universal and Spielberg; their last Jurassic Park picture was released in 2001, directed by Joe Johnston.
Trevorrow made his jump to features on Safety Not Guaranteed, which FilmDistrict acquired and released and which grossed $4 million. He’s making a humungous step up in every way by joining a franchise which, in three films, has grossed nearly $2 billion worldwide, with Universal preparing a theatrical rerelease of the first film in 3D on April 5.
Why Trevorrow? He met with the studio and filmmakers, and they felt he was a good match for the material, having grown up a huge fan of the trilogy and part of a new generation of directors steeped in all things dinosaur. They felt he would preserve and protect the characters in the story they created.
Trevorrow is repped by Verve, 3 Arts and attorney Lev Ginsburg.

Let’s just forget 2 and 3 ever happened…
The Hell you say! “Lost World” was shit, but “JP3″ was the greatest big screen Syfy Original EVER.
JP3 was not among the “greatest big screen Syfy Original[s]“…
All “Original, great big screen Syfy pictures’ have Jeff Goldblum in them.
LOL
You both are wrong.
The third is shit, two is good. Quality follows the series progression. JP, TLW, then JP///. The third is just a dumb monster movie.
Lol, this guy has no experience with big budget effects films. I could be wrong, but this is not a good match.
let’s see what he can do–then bring out the pitchforks ‘umm…’
Well, the guy who directed 500 Days of Summer directed Amazing Spider-Man and that turned out…
Yikes. Nevermind. Well, on the plus side, this could only be better than that!
Yeah, so few directors have ever made the leap from low-budget indies to tentpole pictures.
He made ONE low-budget indie and is now making a $100M+ tentpole. Name others please.
The Wachowski’s went from a low budget indie to The Matrix in a single Bound!…Chris Nolan went from Memento, to Insomnia, and then to Batman Begins, a more gradual progression but a pretty steep one.
Does the name ‘Peter Jackson’ ring a bell?
Umm… is a f-ing idiot. Yes you could be wrong and you are. Watch SNG, this guy has the chops
Given the scribes, they’re obviously trying to go the Rupert Wyatt route.
Steven will see to it that the film turns out just fine. Universal is undoubtedly counting on that. I remember when Spielberg produced “Poltergeist” while directing “ET” he felt more secure in the former’s success than the latter’s. Of course, history has proven otherwise, but now “Poltergeist.” which was a hit albeit not of “ET” proportions, is now being re-made. Spielberg will protect the “Jurassic” franchise.
Right. Just as he did with Jurassic Park 3.
Then why did he let Joe Johnston destroy it with JP3?
Lets hope he protects it better than he did on JP3
I thought it was open to debate that Spielberg just produced Poltergeist. Splitting hairs aside, good luck to this guy. A major jump up but perhaps a fresh approach can bring something unique to a franchise which although successful financially has never really set the world on fire after the first.
Excellent choice! Very similar to when they hired Rupert Wyatt to do Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Like Colin Trevorrow, he made an excellent debut feature that was small but gave him the tools to make a big film and he re-invigorated a dead but prestigious franchise. This now has me excited for Jurassic Park 4.
This will be yet another Jurassic Park installment failing to achieve $200 million.
A step back from Star Wars, don’t you think?
Wait, so you’re going from grossing $4M to directing a movie with a catering budget of $4M. Sounds legit.
Someone please post the real reason why this guy got the job.
Seriously. Why him? Help me understand.
Because Steven likes him. He must have impressed Steven enough that he feels confident Colin can do this as long as he’s surrounded by the best special effects people there’s no reason he can’t succeed on JP4 he’ll have a strong producer in Frank and if the script is strong it will work. You could even direct it if you knew what you were doing.
If he can handle big-budget this will be a great choice. Safety Not Guaranteed was one of my favorite’s from all of last year, I recommend it all of the time. Good for him.
It’s inspiring to see another indie director crash into the studio system. This sort of “gamble” paid off well last year with Marc Webb and The Amazing Spider-Man. It’s nice to see studios focused on hiring great storytellers to steer their franchise vehicles. The “Christopher Nolan Model.”
Marc Webb didn’t tell the story. Scott N. and Michael W. told the story. They started with a blank page. Many famous directors have said, “Directing is 90% script and cast.” I don’t care if he’s the guy who steers the ship. The writer is the only person who starts with the blank page, and those guys wrote an original story. I didn’t even like the movie, it had not one actual well-written joke in it. But it was a well-structured script, and they deserve to be lauded for it.
If this was the Nolan Model he would have skipped MEMENTO and INSOMNIA and gone straight from FOLLOWING to BATMAN.
“Why Trevorrow?” He grew up a huge fan of the trilogy and part of a new generation of directors steeped in all things dinosaur. Okay then….
Really pumped about this emerging school of filmmakers: “[He is] part of a new generation of directors steeped in all things dinosaur.”
Good for him, but no one should be under any illusions that they will be making all important decisions and will solidly be pushing him around.
I hope it works of “Safety not Guaranteed” was a great surprise movie with good laughs and a lot of heart.
This guy has made a couple of shorts and one indie feature, and he’s being set loose with a mega budget production and only 15 months to get from concept art to a finished movie? That’s all kinds of crazy. They may as well have given it to some nobody punk fresh our of film school.
Well Hell, that first film is the reason I started making movies! I wish I’d got in there and pitched for it! I have at least worked with VFX recently! I’m just glad it’s not Joe Johnston again, we’ll see what he does with this. Rupert Wyatt would have been a better choice as I loved his Apes movie.
Danny Boyle gained immense respect (from moi, anyhow) when he turned down the opportunity to direct ALIEN 4 because he felt the jump in budget and effects was too large a gap to survive and do well in. So I guess the question is, is Colin a better director than Danny?
That argument makes complete sense.
Wow. That’s the kind of thing thousands of no-budget directors dream will happen to them. Well done, dude.
I hope they go back to the dark and thrilling theme of the original film. Love it!
Jane Fonda just spoke about how Studios hire inexperienced male directors, but never have the time/interest/incentive to hire an equally unqualified woman for the same job. This is a startling example that she is spot on in her assessment.
There are few inexperienced female directors to choose from.
Hollywood may be sexist, but many women don’t strive to become filmmakers.
Awesome! Another blockbuster movie that I can steal. Bring it baby ~
So they hired an indie director who will no doubt pay his dues by taking directing orders from Spielberg. Just like Poltergeist, which was already mentioned here.
I’m surprised Frank Marshall didn’t want to direct this. He could do it he directed Arachnaphobia then he stopped directing and went back to producing. I guess he didn’t enjoy directing. I’m more surprised that Spielberg isn’t directing it himself he really should he’s not doing anything else at the moment and he could do this one quickly and expertly.
This like giving at F16 to somebody who flew a Piper Cub very well. It can be done but why take the chance? Could it be that Universal said WTF let’s do a quickie knockoff one more time and maybe get lucky?
SAFETY NOT GUARANTEED is great, an inspired idea giving Colin the reins on this one!!!
