Big Love creators Mark V. Olsen & Will Scheffer are returning to HBO‘s primetime. The pay cable network has picked up the duo’s comedy pilot Getting On to series with a six-episode order. A U.S. version of the award-winning BBC Four medical comedy of the same name, HBO’s Getting On stars Laurie Metcalf, Alex Borstein and Niecy Nash. Centering on the put-upon nurses in a women’s geriatric extended-care wing of a down-at-the-heels hospital, it follows the anxious doctors and administrators as they struggle with the darkly comic, brutally honest and quietly compassionate realities of caring for the elderly in an overwhelmed healthcare system. BBC Worldwide Prods is producing. The creators and stars of the original series — Jo Brand, Joanna Scanlan and Vicki Pepperdine — executive produce. Olsen and Scheffer, who wrote the adaptation through their overall deal at HBO, are executive producing though their Anima Sola Prods banner, with SVP Lisa Bellomo producing. BBC Worldwide Prods.’ Jane Tranter and Julie Gardner also executive produce, along with the British series’ producer Geoff Atkinson. Getting On joins another HBO comedy pilot recently picked up to series, Stephen Merchant’s Hello Ladies, with several other half-hour pilots in production.
TV Editor Nellie Andreeva - tip her here.

As someone who watched her mother having truly hysterical times with the bubbly staff in the “memory center” at the senior living home (and the truly funny hospice people who were with her at the end) I’d really rather be “Enlightened”. Sounds pretty grim to me.
Yes, same here.
I don’t need to get stressed and depressed looking at how badly senior care has deteriorated. Nothin’ fun about that.
The British version was wonderful, smart, beautifully acted and written. Not at all grim, surprisingly, and part of the reason it was so clever and unique. Brand, Scanlan and Pepperdine are brilliant talents. Really interested to see how the US version turns out. Best of luck to everyone involved. If anyone can do it, HBO can.
BTW very upset to hear about Enlightened – truly one of the most brilliant pieces of television in years.
Another 30 minute drama. Remember when hbo did funny comedies like curb and Larry sanders?
I believe they said it was a comedy in the article.
Thanks, genius. I said “drama” to imply that it’s not going to be funny.
Calling it HB-ew now.
Just went thoroughly this too. Sorry you don’t have a sense of humor. It’s what got us through.
Surprised someone with your great sense of humor felt the need to characterize @feeling as not having one.
The original Getting On is a TV show with soul. If it’s going to be Americanized at least I’m glad to see it’ll be in the hands of these guys–I loved Big Love and I think they’ll be able to deliver on the heart and comedy.
They canceled Enlightened for this shit?
This show is brilliantly cast. I’m looking very forward to it. Love Alex Borstein and Laurie Metcalf is one of the most underrated actors working today. She is brilliant.
What happened to the HBO that made creative shows, like Dream On? Now its 60 minute dramas, 30 minute dramas and Veep.
