That may raise some eyebrows among DirecTV shareholders who will also vote on whether to require the company to split the chairman and CEO jobs — Michael White currently holds both titles — when they meet on May 2 in New York. White’s big raise came in a year when DirecTV shares appreciated 17.3%. His package includes $1.6M in salary, $12.0M in option awards, $4.0M in non-equity incentives, $163,421 in deferred compensation, and $323,957 in other compensation. The $18M award is about 3.1 times the median compensation for DirecTV’s four other top execs. That’s just over the threshold that corporate governance watchdogs say raises alarms that the chief has too much power. It also is a big change from last year when White’s compensation was just 1.2 times bigger than the rest of the pack, well within the comfort zone. The AFL-CIO Reserve Fund submitted this year’s proposal to require that DirecTV pick an independent director to be chairman, saying that when the CEO has the job it “may hinder the ability of the Board to monitor the CEO’s performance and to provide the CEO with objective feedback and guidance.” DirecTV urges shareholders to reject the change saying that the current arrangement “promotes decisive leadership, ensures clear accountability and enhances the Company’s ability to communicate with a single and consistent voice to all stakeholders.”

Funny how I just received a letter that my rates just got raised and then this happens. Screw that guy. Time to really consider going without a cable or satellite system.
Every provider is raising their prices. Some far more than others (talking about you NBComcast). Of course, they all blame it on the greedy content providers.
We have disconnected from Directtv and they debit my account for $305.74 without even telling us. I filed suit yesterday!!
Large sums of money have been taken from me by this company and I never got the service working. Only had the broken thing for a few months with a (low) rate on one T.V.
Does Michael White even care what is going on? This has to be dealt with on a national level.
These are unauthorized transactions!
Michael, you may have so much money that you do not care about others, but how would you feel if you were robbed everything you had and a company took all you had to live on and care for your children? You cannot go around draining peoples accounts for you own gain and the expect people to respect you and not hate you.
So, that means you do not care about that either. You live on stolen money. Have you no conviction?
To all the victims,
I know the anguish you all feel, although one of the stories I read about a woman who had very little was drained of the money she needed for a ill child. My heart goes out to those in that situation. This company is wrong in the way they do business.
Most companies send remaining fees to collects because sometimes people lose their jobs and only have a little to get them through and it is evil to use deception to gain access and drain them this way. This matter should not be being allowed to continue. Government officials should have shut this down. So lets all pray that God’s hand brings forth vindication and convicts this company of all its deception. In Jesus name.

Dear Sir:
What kind of company are you running? It’s questionable.
I signed up for Directv last summer but cancelled by the end of 2012. Besides unsatisfactory service, your people assured me that there was NO cancellation charge associated with my enrollment all along the way. I admit I signed the papers the installer put in front of me to signify the service was indeed installed and running.
BUT, I subsequently learned you wish to charge me $300 to cancel. I will be happy to testify in open court that I never agreed to this charge, ever, in spite of whatever you might claim, but more to the point: I learned your installer would not have gotten paid if he didn’t get me to sign the papers, so he had an incentive to lie to me. More exactly to the point, with just six months of service, my agreement with your company representative, the installer, that there was NO cancellation charge created a new contract preempting any other contract, verbal or written, that we might have had.
Hence, please remove the $300 promptly from my bill and we can settle up this service. We had an agreement to install this at NO cancellation charge. You cannot be allowed to backslide into possible earlier claims about your charges. Sorry. Man up.
Sincerely,
Former customer
Humm now I know whay my crappy package went up 6 bucks
and why is Direct TV signal always out of sync????
So my bill went up again this year and when I emailed the falsely called Office of the President they as usual blamed higher prices for content. I beg to differ as im sure giving tge ceo a normal paycheck would prevent people like me from exploring other options, considering Comcast adds a $15 surcharge to ny internet bill for using a comoetitor. Its no longer a savings
This is the reason ALL corporations need to separate the COB and CEO titles into two separate positions. The “good ol’ boys” boardroom club needs to end. It should be illegal for a CEO to be involved in the creation of their own compensation package.
Stop the greed now.
-Corporations are not charities.
-It makes sense that my cable bill went up and the CEO is raising his salary by 200%.
-It’s not just his take home pay people, it’s stock options. Don’t you understand how money works? Take an economics class, liberals.
-You don’t like it? Move to China, Communist.
-This was like when that liberal tried to tell me that Walmart encourages its employees to get on welfare when they complain about their unaffordable health care package. There’s no way that’s true, because I don’t want it to be true.
-These big media companies are constantly screwing creatives out of fair compensation because they need the money to pay the CEO. What don’t you understand?!!
-The Free Market is the greatest!
-I’m a middle class parent of four kids who will never rise above my economic bracket, but I go to a really great church on Sundays that tells me how to vote so I’m happy.
-Look, Spartacus is on!!
- A CEO who is also Chairman ensures clear accountability. Because it surely makes sense for someone to vote on their own compensation increase.
That’s right, folks.
You think your rate increase is necessary to fund additional channel carriage and quality programming? Hah-hah! Think again. You are merely paying the CEO’s salary.
I was a DrekTV customer for nine years, until they dropped support for TiVo. I tested their proprietary DVR and was so irritated by its Neanderthal craftsmanship that I bought the new TiVo Premiere and switched to Time Warner Cable. Granted, TWC is not much better than DrekTV, with respect to this article, but I have been saving money and have been much more confident with TWC service and DVR functionality.
Now, every week I receive a letter from DrekTV, begging me to come back, but I just let out a hearty laugh and toss the trash where it belongs.
My God – will it really take an “American Revolution 2″ (a sequel, and we know how the media loves a sequel) before the disparity between the 1% and the rest of the nation begins to close? Raises like this are just obscene, especially when rates for DirectTV (and other providers) continue to go up. Just what WILL it take before Americans finally reject all the wealth that is concentrated at the top and do something about it?
Since they’re doing so well can the get their salesmen to stop attacking me every time I walk into a Best Buy?
I have no beef with Mr. White getting such compensation. I had two different cable outfits for 25 years before switching to DirecTV, and in my mind, there’s no comparison. DTV’s Audience Channel alone is like having an Aussie/U.K./Canadian channel that no one else gets.
But, my admiration for White comes from a personal experience.
Last summer, in a misguided move, DTV started adding on-screen graphics on Audience Channel shows promoting other shows. At the same time, they started compressing end credits so as to promote other future broadcasts.
I sent White a personal e-mail asking what the heck DirecTV was doing, and wondered if Mr. White could imagine Turner Classic Movies or HBO degrading their content by cluttering up the screen with pop-up promos and compressed credits.
I received a personal e-mail back within days from Mr. White saying he agreed this was a bad move on DTV’s part, and within a week’s time, all such pop-ups and compressed credits had ceased.
If anyone else can show a CEO responding personally to a complaint, and rectifying it within a week’s time, I’d love to hear about it because it was a new one in my book. And any chairman that is wise enough to actually listen to customers is worth whatever he’s getting paid, to my way of thinking.
Was that worth a 200% raise? I don’t think so.
No one — NO ONE — is actually worth that much. Especially in this economy.
I received a call from a directv person telling me that I could get back the channels that we wanted and also receive the HBO and Cinmax which I told him I didn’t want HBO or Cinmax I don’t approve of the programs on those channels, and the cost would be only 17.95 for 3 months I waited for 24 hours but never got the channels that he told me I would get but of course I got the HBO and the Cinmax I wish I could get rid of Directv today because they told me how much better they were than Dish but I here to tell you as soon as you sign that contract they could care less about you. Just let me out of the contract so I can get the programing that we want. Nancy
I have been with DirecTV since 94. I was loyal to them until this year. I live in Houston and we have not viewed a Houston Rockets game this year. I cannot believe we will miss a hold season. I blame this on Mr. 18m White. We know his job is to make share holders money but his job is also to satisfy customers. Yes, even the Houston area customers. Unfortunately, we do not get to vote on his pay. DirecTV has always charged more than any other provider. And I always paid without complaining because their service is good unless it rains. But they have dropped the ball this time and as soon as the NFL packages is offers by other providers I will jump.
I have directv for 12 years and never got a receiver anything at all.. NOW the hockey that I am paying for is on channel 215 most of the time also the baseball channel my husband wants makes the bill now from 93 dollars to 148 dollars. Without a job for the past YEAR cut me a brake
I am a 72 yr old retiree on limited income. In an effort to cut costs I chose to leave Directv after being a loyal customer for 7 years. I went with Dish Network because they were considerably less expensive. I contacted Directv before I cancelled their services and asked if there was anything they could do to help lower my bill and they stated there was nothing they could do. I asked them if there would be any charges for disconnect my service with them. They stated absolutely that I would hav no additional charges for disconnecting. They lied to me. I received a bill for $300.00 for my disconnect supposedly because I had added another TV to my services and they claim I signed a contact stating I had signed up for 2 more years. This is crazy. I asked them to send me a copy of the contact that I signed.
They sent instead a copy of the contract but with no signature on it. I am in the process of telling my family and friends that Directv cannot be trusted. They lie to their customers.
In my four short months having switched from perfect Comcast to directv, our tv life has been a nightmare. 5 service calls to the tune if 22 hours not to mention hours on the phone with their upper and upper upper level mgmt department.
Please provide mr. Whites email or phone; they will not give me that. Thank you so much!
