Z-Machine announced today that production has begun on Before the End: Jim Morrison Comes of Age. With a focus on bringing the legend down to earth, the independent documentary feature follows the trajectory of Jim Morrison’s development, prior to his rock superstardom. Through interviews with family and friends, many of whom are speaking about Morrison for the first time, as well as never-before-seen home movies and photographs from his formative years, the viewer (or voyeur, as Morrison liked to say) will share in a clear-headed, open-minded exploration of James Douglas Morrison, human being, as opposed to Jim Morrison, rock god.
Known [in]famously as the lead singer of The Doors, Morrison accomplished much in his brief life beyond music, including three self-published books of poetry and an experimental film. He received numerous accolades on his way to achieving fabled status, but over the last four decades, persistent rumors and myths have distorted the truth. When Morrison passed on in July 1971, he left a controversial legacy riddled with unanswered questions and misinterpretations. Before the End: Jim Morrison Comes of Age will shed new light on the artist’s early life, and his mysterious death at age 27.
Before the End: Jim Morrison Comes of Age documents Morrison via those who experienced him as a person, not just a persona, including Jim’s brother Andy Morrison, Florida State University roommate Bryan Gates, Morrison’s UCLA film
instructor Bill Adams, and Doors roadie Gareth Blyth, among many others. In addition, hours of off-the-record conversations with Jim’s sister, Anne Morrison-Chewning, his first serious girlfriends, Tandy Martin and Mary Werbelow, and good friend Alain Ronay helped put puzzle pieces in place.Z-Machine is run by filmmakers Jeff and Jess Finn, whose previous work includes the independent documentary feature, Strange Septembers: The Hill Abduction & The Exeter Encounter.

Didn’t Dick Wolf (yes, that Dick Wolf) do this a few years ago? Not to mention a few others. Can’t get too excited about this.
Morrison is so ’90s.
Hmmmm…..funny, this is the first I’m hearing about this. Must be a pretty exciting venture that’s well thought-out, legitimate, funded, and has the cooperation of all involved!
Of course, on the other hand, I manage The Doors, as well as the Jim Morrison Estate, and again, neither my clients nor our company have ever heard of this, about this, nor been contacted by anyone regarding this. As we control all film, photos, music, poetry and other Intellectual Property for both The Doors and Jim Morrison, I’m sure it must be just an oversight from completely legitimate producers/filmmakers.
Jeff, take it easy. I visited them in a dream last night, they have my blessing.

No offense intended, Jeff. As you manage The Doors Music Co. and our documentary’s focus is on Jim’s pre-Doors years, we weren’t aware we needed to contact you. But that’s something we’ll gladly do. We were told Anne Morrison-Chewning and Penny Courson jointly controlled Jim’s personal estate. Please feel free to contact Anne or Andy Morrison with regards to our project as both are on board.
Jampol in the house!
While I certainly went through my Jim Morrison phase as a youth, even the image of the man now gives me a headache. Sad but true.
Sorry… meant to reply to Jeff’s post.
Ummmm…..why? The best Doors Documentary was already made. “When You’re Strange”…..
Thank God (& Dionysus?!) that Jeff Jampol & Company ARE able to separate Wheat from Chaff … Jampol Inc IS “in place” to (correctly) PROTECT the Enduring Legacy of BOTH J.D. Morrison AND The Doors Music Inc., as well as the surviving members. The Doors were a Quartet. They NEVER WERE allowed to be re-named “Jim Morrison AND The Doors. EVERYBODY Should take note of that Fact …
I’ve been rumored to become “Grouchy” when my employer & friend is misrepresented with Psuedo-Intellectual, Street Corner suppositions based in whatever the latest Psycho-Babble happens to be.
Jeff Jampol is that Legal Entity, protecting Jimbo’s Legacy. My approach is based according to a “Different Discipline” … without Jampol Music, Inc involved, ANY “project” is doomed to consideration as a Con Man’s Ruse to live large on investor dollars until REALITY catches up.
Anyone with half a brain knows this Jampol guy is the ‘manager’ of a string of DEAD ROCK STARS.
He doesn’t have even one living (!) client at his company. What does that tell you? yeah, rhetorical question. It’s common knowledge in music biz that the high priced lawyers take the big legal fees from these Estates (of dead artists),. And then hand off the GRUNT WORK to people like Jeff. I know for fact, Jampol’s co only does ‘social media marketing’ for some of these (dead) acts. Stuff the lawyers in Bel Air don’t want to go near…like monitoring Twitter and FB pages. They might get a small percetage of revenue they generate or bring into the Estate, bottom of the barrel stuff. I met him once and Jampol came off like an arrogant, full of himself, tired music exec who’s scavaging on the GRAVES of people like Jim Morrison and others. “Protecting Morrison and the Doors” as this guy sez above? Haaahaa. More like parasite, he can’t get another job in the music biz buddy, that’s all. Maybe we’ll read next week that CAA has asked Jeff to ‘manage’ the “estate” of Tony Scott, can’t believe that seamy story either that I read here. Good luck with the Morrison doc, and don’t be intimidated by Jeff or his perceived ‘ownership’ of protecting Doors legacy. Like Oz, it’s an illusion.
This Lenny guy is right on target. I know Jampol for years, he’s totally full of himself like it’s a big deal REPPING A BEVY OF D E A D Rawk stars. Pee-ewww. Grave scrapper. Jampol runs around saying (even on his website) that he “manages” the (Estate) of….Michael Jackson. Total EGO EXAGGERATION. First he never had anything to do with Michael Jackson when the superstar was alive. We also know for FACT that he only does media marketing for social boards, etc. to monitor all of MJ’s rabid fans. Sounds more like the work of a Publicist to us. It’s John Branca who Manages the Estate of Michael Jackson and takes all the big ‘management’ fees…in the millions, like $6-$10M per year. Maybe he throws $80k to Jampol as a bannana. Anyway, when my friend Spike Lee recently produced the MJ Special for ABC-TV (Bad:25 Year Anniversary)…JAMPOL GOT ZERO CREDIT ON THE DOC AND CD. He wasn’t even listed as an ‘associate producer’ or consultant. Both Sony Music and even his pal Branca at MJ Estate DENIED JAMPOL THE MOST BASIC CREDIT ON MJ Movie + TV special. Do the math. He still runs around town and says on his website he “manages Michael Jackson Estate.” Really sad to see such misrepresentation and deception, but what does it cost MJ’s lawyers? Jeff gets to Brag online and to people who are stoopid enuf to believe it, and the lawyers in Century City get to keep the millions in legal fees while Jampol does all the dirty work to clean up fan sites, etc. Jim Morrison should be rolling over in his box in Paris right about now. The End, indeed.
